John, There were three Shallow families in the Castlecomer area in the 1901 census; two in Cloneen and one in Moneenroe. Of course many could have immigrated in the previous decades. One head of household in Cloneen was a widow, Catherine (nee Brennan) born 1836; the other, also a widow, was Margaret (nee Tierney) born 1847.Edward Shallow, from Moneenroe, was born in 1870. (Census birth ages are always approximate.) Shallow is not a common Irish name so if I were you, I would start by looking at the Griffith's Valuation index: http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.htm While your family would not be in it, relatives might be. This is a list of head of households (kinda like a census). It was conducted in Co Kilkenny 1849-51 and it will give you an idea where the name is found in the county. Before that, there were the tithes, again a listing of head of households but done 10-20 years previous to the Griffith's. http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp The above is the Archives of Ireland website. If you don't find your name and have time, I would go over each and every page for Kilkenny because the handwriting can be difficult to read and may have been misspelled. They are also on the FamilySearch.org website where you can browse through all the tithes for Kilkenny. Sometimes, I find this an easier place to navigate. None of the above records will prove that the names you find are actually your family, that will have to done with church records. The Irish Roots website has excellent County Kilkenny records but they can be costly. They recently changed their system to a subscription site. http://www.rootsireland.ie If anyone one else has suggestions, please feel free to mention them. Also, check out the Kilkenny section of my website, I have many records there also. This is a great idea. I am researching Foley (E.) from the Castlecomer/Smithstown area. I also have a sterling silver loving cup/trophy presented by: Charles Wandrstord JP For Polo-Ponies Won by E Foley's G.G. The Shah At Castlecomer November 24th, 1876 I would love to find to look for more information on this trophy. Terry Foley Powell. Hi all, Still here, after all these years!! And I'm still hoping to find any Muldowneys that can be found. However, my problem may never be solved, the records only go back so far. My particular Muldowney line (Edward Muldowney, b. 1810, and, wife, Mary Butler) came to the US somewhere on the east coast, during the famine years. I have never been able to find what ship or port they arrived in. But they were all miners who came to Schuylkill Co.. Edward's brother, John Muldowney, b.1812, and his wife, Maria Dempsey, also came to the US but via Canada. If I remember correctly, one or two of John and Maria's children may have been born in Canada. They eventually all settled in Schuylkill Co. All were miners. I can't speak for John and Maria's line, but my Edward and Mary's line had miners who were musicians (played and repaired violins) and also repaired clocks. Over ten years ago, via my local LDS center, I was able to find the marriage records for John Muldowney and Maria Dempsey. They were married in Loan, Sept. 29, 1838, witnessed by Pat Butler and Mary Doran. Back then I also poured over some other LDS films for Thomastown, Muckalee, and a film with just Co. Kilkenny. I wrote down any info associated with any Muldowney , so I have other names, witnesses and sponsors. Most of the films also indicate townlands. If anyone would like to see any of what I recorded from these films, please write me off-list and I will send them to you. Who knows, you may see some names you recognize that could be clue for future research. Glad to see activity again on this list -- just wish the other lists I've been on would kick in again. As for Facebook, I just can't convince myself genealogy will work in that format. Another name I'm researching in another county belonged to MyFamily.com, which is no more. They have taken it to Facebook as a last resort. I am told there are 'privacy settings', but I can't bring myself to join. Anyone with good vibes about this aspect of Facebook?!! Mary Elizabeth in Fla.
Hi Pat, I bought that same book by the late Tom Lyng in the same bookshop you did, on the square in Castlecomer. It's so packed with material that I swear I haven't read the whole thing yet, though it was years ago. Interesting to see your folks came from Gorteen/Moneenroe; you're right, they're just a hoot and a holler away from Clogh. My grandfather Daniel Langton lived in Mooneenroe for years, moving on to Cloneen later. He worked in the mines, eventually he was elected mining clerk, and didn't have to go down into "the bowels of the earth" (his phrase, he was a poet/songwriter.) One story told of him was when he was collecting for a new Catholic church. He knew his Protestant friends would be unlikely to donate for a new RC church, so he asked them to donate to a fund to tear down the old one. It would be nice to hear from a few more listers, just to know they're out there. I see Debbie checked in, and Iris, and Benny Dowd, let's try to get a quorum together. I was negative about using FACEBOOK for genealogy, now I'm in a neutral mode, and may even turn positive. If it works, sez I, work it for all it's worth. Hi all! Nice to hear from some friendly faces, so I suppose the recent list spam actually did some good :-) ! I had gotten frustrated with my Castlecomer brick wall, and turned my search to my Polish side and to my Castlecomer people in Schuylkill County PA. But on the chance that maybe I should renew my Castlecomer search, my main surname interest in the area is LARGE. Kavanagh is another. A special hello to Jack and Pat, great to see your posts! Deb

Hi Mary Elizabeth, As far as I know you can share it with anyone and everyone. I see this list as a great help to those seeking their female ancestors by a maiden same, since most of these girls were single and yet they would be married in the near future, thus their original surnames would vanish from the records. I've already found a couple of cousins. (I've always had a soft spot for the Castlecomer list. Maybe it can be made more active). This website will be good for anyone doing Irish research. Hope you don't mind if I share it with others too. Mary Elizabeth
