Hi Deb, I don't know of any of my forebears who settled in Jackson's Patch or Tuscarora but in the book _Dewees, F. P. The Molly Maguires :the origin, growth, and character of the organization. Philadelphia : J.B. Lippincott, 1877._ (http://pds.lib.harvard.edu/pds/view/5197335) much mention is made in regard to the members of the community of Jackson's Patch. From what I glimpsed it was almost all Kilkenny people who resided there. See also _http://pds.lib.harvard.edu/pds/search/5197335_ (http://pds.lib.harvard.edu/pds/search/5197335) Jack Langton
We have discussed Castlecomer people emigrating to Schuylkill County in Pennsylvania, and other nearby coal mining counties, but I don't recall ever asking if anyone on the list has Castlecomer area ancestors who settled in Tuscarora, Schuylkill County, in particular? It is a small village near Tamaqua. I would also be interested in any Castlecomer emigrants to a tiny miners' settlement called Jackson's Patch near Mahanoy City. Thanks to Jack and Pat for their answers. Maire had written me also to say that the films are one and the same, and that there is no 1826 RC baptism film. So, I am going to take my Richard Large's RC baptism off my "tree." At least I now know not to keep looking for a film of it. My Large ancestors were confusing with all their running back and forth between churches! I keep hoping for a clue to their disappearance from Castlecomer records during the early 1820's. Deb PS Maire, I tried to email you to thank you, but my email gets returned by that mailer daemon. **************** DEBORAH LARGE FOX http://irishfamilyresearch.blogspot.com www.deborahlarge.com
Hi Deb, You raise a very interesting question, one that I had never even thought of, as to whether the Castlecomer films at the NLI and at the LDS are one and the same. I always just assumed they were, and had never had occasion to doubt it, thinking that the LDS had simply filmed the NLI material. Though how KAS could find an RC baptism in 1826 is strange, perhaps Gurteen was not considered a part of Castlecomer at that time. (As far as I can recall Clogh and it's surrounds were not split from the parish of Castlecomer until about 1831) I remember Jane Lyons mentioning that she had found some Clogh, Kilkenny records on a film that otherwise contained Clough, Laois records. The two townlands are not very far apart. I am trying to check on the Kilkenny BRS list, but they tell me my account has been "disabled" and I have to sort that out. Perhaps a posting to the Kilkenny and Laois mailing lists would broaden the inquiry. Jack Langton
> > I was looking at the LDS films of Castlecomer parish records and wondered--are the films in the NLI the same films as the LDS, both for Castlecomer and Ireland generally? I don't know the complete answer for your question but can tell you when I viewed the Griffith's Valuation House Books before they were released by the Family History Library, at the NLI in 2006, the preface of the film stated they were filmed by FHL and a copy given to NLI. So, I think they have an agreement that if FHL gets to film a record, the NLI also gets a copy and gets to release new records a year or two before FHL. That is my impression from what I saw when the House Books were first discovered by NLI. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
Here I am again with another thought on an old brick wall of mine. I was looking at the LDS films of Castlecomer parish records and wondered--are the films in the NLI the same films as the LDS, both for Castlecomer and Ireland generally? Or did the NLI undertake its own filming? I have not looked much at the film collection of the NLI, because of my short stays in Dublin (I figured my time was better spent on the Wandesforde papers), but now I am wondering if I be missing a resource. Back in the 1990's I received the information from KAS that my great grandfather, Richard LARGE of Gurteen was baptized at St. Mary's (Church of Ireland) on 10 Sept. 1826, then was baptized at the RC church in Castlecomer on the same date. His three sisters were also baptized at both churches. At the RCB, I found the Church of Ireland baptismal records. On the LDS film of the RC church records, I found the entry for the 3 sisters. However, I have never been able to find a source for a RC baptism of Richard. It is not in the LDS films, and all records descriptions I have read claim that the RC Castlecomer records for 1826 were not filmed. The IFHF database returns only the Church of Ireland baptism. So, I am wondering if the report from KAS about Richard's RC baptism was an error, OR whether I have missed looking at a film somewhere (e.g., NLI) that the LDS do not have. If Richard was never baptized RC, it supports a family story that I have been verifying piece by piece, as many of you have heard MANY times. Forgive my repeated posts on this family line, but I have that researcher's intuition that I am missing a big clue here somewhere! Thanks, Deb **************** DEBORAH LARGE FOX http://irishfamilyresearch.blogspot.com www.deborahlarge.com

Hi Deb, Poems by Irish grandparents is a subject close to my heart. My grandfather used to write his on the whitewashed inside wall of his cabin. At one time his entire current output was literally wiped out by a fresh coat of paint Or so family lore would have it. Your task of teasing out a location etc. from the poems of your student's grandfather would seem to be very simple or extraordinarily difficult, depending on his writing style, and the references used. Was she able to trace him at all in Ireland, using the 1911 census or the IFHF site? Sometimes you can narrow it down to the townland. Or perhaps siblings can be found, which may lead to him. Even if he published, it may have been done privately, so that would be hard. If she wants to submit names or dates to the lists some kind soul may be able to suggest something. Regards, Jack
Jack, You mentioned poems by your ancestors. I have a woman in one of my classes who has a stack of poems written by a grandfather from Co. Kilkenny. The poems speak of people, Irish causes, and of growing up in Ireland (we believe Co. Kilkenny). One mentions a monastery at Christmas. We have been searching the poems for hints and clues as to what townland or parish the grandfather may be from. We are searching to see if he published any of them (probably in Philadelphia). Any advice you might be able to give us? Especially regarding "de-coding" the poems? Thanks! For genealogy purposes, and most purposes, I go to clustering search engines first. I began using clustering engines in my law practice, and found them even more valuable as genealogy tools. For anyone not familiar with them, a clustering search engine will place your results in clusters or categories. So, if you are searching a name, the engine will weed out and order the results by topic for you: e.g., Deborah Large might produce categories such as "law" "genealogy" "Philadelphia" etc. Then you don't have to be bothered with all the "law" links, you can go right to the genealogy ones. However, due to the market share of the popular google and other engines, many of the clustering engines have fallen by the wayside. I use Clusty almost exclusively. http://clusty.com But I am always interested in finding new search engines. As Jack pointed out, these engines are all hit or miss to a large extent. I'll join Jack in the New Year toast to Serendipity! Hi Deb, I like Cuil but i'm still kicking it's tires, no breakthroughs yet. Funny thing, prompted by your e-mail I took another look for my father Daniel Langton. Didn't find him, but found a couple more poems by my brother Daniel J. that I hadn't known about, so I thank you for that. I'll raise a glass to Serendipity along with my New Year toast. Jack
