I have seen references in Co. Kilkenny and Castlecomer records in the early 1800's to tenancies measured in "lives." I remember enough old property law to know that a person's tenancy was often measured in terms of the lives of (usually) 3 other people. I believe it had some basis in the old common law rule against perpetuities. My question is this--at the expiration of the tenancy, when all the measuring lives were dead, were any legal papers filed that noted the transfer or reversion of the property? My thinking is that, if an ancestor is noted as one of the "lives," his date of death could be recorded in a land document somewhere. I did see references in the Wandesforde papers where Wandesforde directed his agents to see if certain people used as measuring lives were still in fact alive, but I did not see any papers/or deeds dealing with the property transfers. Where would such papers be kept? Deb DEBORAH LARGE FOX Read my blog for Irish research tips: "Help! The Faerie Folk Hid My Ancestors!" http://irishfamilyresearch.blogspot.com

Thank you very much Mary for all these details. I am interested in the various people mentioned as it seems some of the Crennans went to USA and some to Australia about the same time. But there were only a few Crennan families in Castlecomer area and none elsewhere really so they are all related back to castlecomer. Mary C. Taferner wrote: > Elaine, I do not have more information on Crennans in Ireland, except that they probably came from the Castlecomer area ( Loan ) where Patrick Cummings family lived. I do have a picture of Margaret Crennan Cummings and her family. There is an obituary for Margarets brother Lawrence who died in Mahanoy City about August 4, 1905. In that obituary, it states that he is survived by several sisters: > Mrs. Michael Wade of Shenandoah > Mrs. Felix Quinn ( not sure if she lived in Shenandoah or Mahanoy City ) > Mrs. Patrick Cummings of Jacksons > Mrs. John O'Brien of Coles > Mrs. Julie Dunn of Coles > Mrs. Lizzie Doyle of Philadelphia. > Internment at St Kyrans cemetery in Hecksherville > > Mary > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-KIL-CASTLECOMER-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > >
I think someone on the list has the indexed version of the 1901 census in Castlecomer book. I was hoping to get a lookup on the following family most likely living in Moneenroe Laurence Brennan c.1840 age approx 61 in 1901 [Brennan Rush] Ellen Brennan (wife) c.1845 age approx 56 in 1901 [Originally Ellen Neill] Marcella Brennan (mary) b 1875 age approx 26 in 1901 William Brennan b 1877 age approx 24 in 1901 Michael Brennan b 1879 age approx 22 in 1901 Elizabeth Brennan b 1883 age approx 18 in 1901 There may be other children after Elizabeth that I haven't found in the records. Any help greatly appreciated Tom.
Tom, There are two Laurence Brennan in the 1901 census in the Castlecomer area. Neither is from Moneenroe, one 1s 69, the 0ther 44. The closest match I could see is the following: Cottage #87, Moneenroe Ellen Brennan, Head, 60, Farmer, Widow Andy Brennan, Son, 30, Coalminer John Brennan, Son, 28, Coalminer Mary Brennan, Daughter, 25 William Brennan, Son, 22, Coachman I have no church records after 1880, and no record of a Marcella (Mary) birth. William Brennan, born Oct 15, 1877/baptized Oct21, parents Laurence Brennan/Ellen Neil, witnesses Jno (?) Boyle/Margaret Boyle Michael Brennan, born July 18, 1879/baptized July 20, parents Lau Brennan/Ellen Neil, witnesses Wm Cosgrove (?)//Ellen Neil (?) Jack Langton

For the last several weeks i've been checking on a website called KILKENNY ALIVE, which has all the latest news about the county and it's townlands. Castlecomer seems to be well represented, but it does a good coverage of all. Sports, gossip, death notices, etc. I have no personal connection to the site. _http://kilkennyalive.com/_ (http://kilkennyalive.com/) Jack Langton

Thanks Mary, for the information on Jacksons. I would definitely be interested in a baptismal list from Loan, as I have seen some family names in that area. I am interested in LARGE, BOWE, KELLY, and KAVANAGH in the area. Has the list ever been published to this mailing list, or is it too long? If it has, I could try to find it in the archives. Deb, Glad to help, actually it was your original question concerning the intriguingly named Tuscarora and Jackson's Patch that led me to look further. I have bookmarked the site and plan to read much further, since Kilkenny names are mentioned frequently. As you say, how nice to have it on-line. And congratulations on your genealogy blog. A lot more informative than many I read. Jack Langton
You better duck, Jack, I am running your way with a BIG bear hug LOL The Dewees book is such a find! And online at that! I will also pass on the link to a young man I know who is a law student doing research into posthumous pardons for some of the Mollies. I have not found any of my Castlecomer people mentioned as a Molly, but in Tuscarora, the Mollies secretly met in a house that was almost right next door from my Richard Large, from what I have been told. **************** DEBORAH LARGE FOX My Blog: "Help!
