In writing my blog post today on researching Irish genealogy on You Tube, I noticed that Mr. Coffey (COFLUN channel on You Tube) has uploaded more Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny, videos. I have place a link to his video channel at the end of the blog posting. There is also a link to the Teapot Genies' channel, which includes an interview with a clergyman in Co. Kilkenny. http://irishfamilyresearch.blogspot.com Deb DEBORAH LARGE FOX Read my blog for Irish research tips: "Help! The Faerie Folk Hid My Ancestors!" http://irishfamilyresearch.blogspot.com
I was searching on Google books for something else and came across The History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory by Wm Carrigan. The section on Castlecomer begins on page 156. There are many names throughout. Of particular interest is a list of names of people buried in the ancient church of the Holy Cross, which, I believe, was the old RC church torn down by the first Lord Wandesforde (I might be a little fuzzy on my history). Those names are found on pp. 159-60. There is also a list of "Mass stations" with names on page 163. I will paste the link, but if it does not work, try using "Carrigan" and "history" and "Ossory" as search terms. You will also turn up other books of interest on Kilkenny and Castlecomer. You might also try "Healy" and "History" and either "Ossory" or "Kilkenny" because some of his books appear to be valuable. I initially looked at the Ormonde book while doing a google books search for "Kilkenny." I saw the list that Pat found in it, but haven't had the time to figure out what exactly why the people were on the list. They were not all Kilkenny people, as Pat said, they were from all over Ireland. If any list members discover nuggets of information like Pat did in the book, I would love to know. What I did is I downloaded the book as a pdf file and then put it as a shortcut on my desktop. I am going to build a little desktop library of these books that I find. Any members that have found other books similar to the Ormonde Kilkenny one, please post about it. Here is the link again for anyone who might have missed the earlier discussion: http://books.google.com/books?id=u6hAAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=kilkenny&ei=dx2IS9z1KqLAzQTE6Mj-DQ&cd=7#v=onepage&q=&f=false Thanks, Jack for that Geneabloggers link. And, for your continuing support! I started the blog to replace a little newsletter I had been sending out to people at my talks. (Well, really I began it out of sheer boredom while I was confined to home after the surgery! LOL) I want the blog to be as much "news" as possible and not just fluffy "navel gazing" (not that there is anything wrong with fluff!), so I would love to hear from any list members with topics, ideas, or questions. Hi Deb, Thanks for the tip on the Ormonde manuscripts book on Google books. I saw your blog entry this week on _http://www.geneabloggers.com/genealogy-blogs-march-6-2010/_ (http://www.geneabloggers.com/genealogy-blogs-march-6-2010/) a site I had not been familiar with, having to do with the Wandesforde papers etc. You are well on your way to one of those blog lists, mark my words. While researching for my blog, I came across this book on Google book search, and realized that it had tons and tons of names from all over Ireland. http://books.google.com/books?id=u6hAAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=kilkenny&ei=dx2IS9z1KqLAzQTE6Mj-DQ&cd=7#v=onepage&q=&f=false DEBORAH LARGE FOX Read my blog for Irish research tips: "Help! The death has taken place in Delaware, USA of Rita Forster (Nee Dowling) formerly of Donaguile. Born into a large family she emigrated to America in her teens. There she was to spend the rest of her life but she never forgot her roots and always kept in touch with events on Deenside. She took a great interest in gardening and had a special grá for Irish dancing. How fitting it was to see a pair of dancing pomes form part of the Offertory Procession at the Requiem Mass. She was laid to rest in the Parish Cemetery after Requiem Mass celebrated in the Church of the Immaculate Conception by Fr. Tom Corcoran C.C. Castlecomer assisted by Monsignor Ryan P.P. Castlecomer. She is survived by her husband Mike ; son Michael ; daughters Katherine, Laura ; brothers Joe, John, Paddy, Noel, Michael, Liam, Seamus ; sisters Lily, Annie, Julie, Helen, Bridget, Bernie, Kathleen ; grandchildren Valerie, Rebekah, Caitlin, Matthew, Patrick, Erik, Travis, David, Ronan, Declan ; other relatives and a large circle of friends. Jack, I'm blushing! LOL Thanks for the kind words! To all list members, I am going to be using my gmail address in the future because I am having difficulty sending email. Please use deborahlargefox@gmail.com for any off-list correspondence. I apologize for the inconvenience, but I have been having major email problems. I'll be unsubscribing to the list and re-subscribing under the gmail address to avoid confusion, but that might take me a couple of days. Deb Help! Hi all, The prestigious EASTMAN ONLINE GENEALOGY NEWSLETTER has a glowing review today for the blog published by Debbie Large Fox, one of our own, called HELP! Thanks to Maire for alerting us to that great video! Mr. Coffey has posted other videos of the area as well-- if list members click on his You Tube "channel" you can view them all. I often forget that You Tube can be a genealogical and historical source and not just a place to find and post cat and travel videos (I plead guilty to that). Right away, I noticed the Jacksons Patch photo! I would be very interested in knowing what book the page is from? Deb DEBORAH LARGE FOX Read my blog for Irish research tips: "Help! It played well today, with only a few small hiccups that didn't affect the overall quality, and I truly enjoyed it. Modestly John Coffey did not include a picture of Joyce's Pub, which stands at the cross in Clogh, and which he owns. John is a fine photographer in his own right. I recognized some of the pictures from seeing them on the walls of his pub, a mini-museum in itself. I recommend the photos to anyone interested in Castlecomer. Aside to Debbie: one of the photos shows residents of Jackson's Patch, Pennsylvania. Jack Langton

I just realized that I should have posted the language in the property record that got me so excited about using "measuring lives" as a genealogical resource. This way, other list members can see what I have been blabbering about. Here is the language in the Wandesforde estate records for a Boe family I am tracing: "KYRAN BOE, Newtown. Landlord: Archbishop of Cashel. Barony Fassadinin. Lives (measurement of lease): Michael WALTON and Mark BOE, lessees, and Kyran BOE grandson of Mark BOE. 8th Nov 1808." I found another for Urlingford: JOHN BOWE, Urlingford. Barony=Galmoy. LIves (measurement of lease): Philip and Thomas MCCORMICK and Thomas BOWE, sons of lessees. 24th May 1809." What is notable for us genealogists is that these leases and land records usually describe the relationships of the "measuring lives" in order to identify them properly. See what got me so excited? I am chasing a train of thought about the land records, so if the list will tolerate some online musing? My memory is very hazy about 1800's property law, but I think that the sort of tenancy that is based on "lives" would be granted in a deed, and not just mentioned in estate records. So, I am thinking that not only would there be a deed granting the tenancy, but there would be some kind of deed or legal filing about the three "lives" being ended. I never really thought about land records before since most of my ancestors were lucky enough to have a roof over their heads, let alone a piece of land! But an ancestor could have been a "measuring life." So anyone who can educate me about Co. Kilkenny land records or property law (where where/are deeds filed and kept), I would sure appreciate it. I am thinking tracing these "lives" in deeds could open a genealogical resource for many of us researchers, especially in the Castlecomer area.
