Hi Deb, From _www.answers.com_ (http://www.answers.com) re passports _Home_ (http://www.answers.com/) > _Library_ (http://www.answers.com/main/what_content.jsp) > _History, Politics & Society_ (http://www.answers.com/main/government.jsp) > _US History Encyclopedia_ (http://www.answers.com/library/US+History+Encyclopedia-cid-59820) Passports issued to United States citizens provide proof of identity abroad and request, in the name of the secretary of state, that the holder be permitted to travel "without delay or _hindrance_ (http://www.answers.com/topic/hindrance) " and, if necessary, be given "all lawful aid and protection." The earliest surviving passport issued by U.S. diplomatic officials dates to 1788. Until 1856, officials such as governors and mayors, as well as the U.S. Department of State, issued passports. After 1856, however, issuance was confined to the Department of State. Except for the Civil War period, passports were not required of foreign travelers to the United States until 1918. The requirement was made permanent in 1921. Under the Internal Security Act of 1950, passports could not be issued to members of communist organizations or to those whose activities abroad would violate the laws of the United States. The provision debarring U.S. communists from obtaining passports was revoked in 1964. Formerly, issuance was deemed to be at the absolute discretion of the Department of State, but in 1958 the Supreme Court recognized that the "right to travel" constituted a liberty of which a law-abiding citizen could not be deprived. As the twenty-first century began, plans were _afoot_ (http://www.answers.com/topic/afoot) to replace passports with a system whereby software would translate the pattern of a person's iris into a passport number
I am not sure whether this has been previously posted and I have missed it - but if not members of the list may be interested to know that the 1901 Irish census is now available for free search as well as the 1911 census. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ Michael Loughlin
Thanks, Jack for the tips. I went to clusty.com and I am guessing it is changing its name to Yippy? But the clusty link worked. I played around with your search terms and added "passport" and "history" and am retrieving some very useful information. I've never known if our ancestors needed passports,( particularly, for me, in the first half of the 1800's). Which brings me to the next thought, which is--if they did, are there records of these passports (I assume in British archives)? Deb Deborah Large Fox Help! Hi Deb, I used the cluster type search engine _http://clusty.com_ (http://clusty.com) and used the advanced search option with a boolean search putting assisted emigration AND kilkenny AND Wandesforde in the Query box There was a fairly good return, some the same-old same-old but others I hadn't seen before on Google searches, or perhaps they were buried in Google's endless hits. Might be worth a shot. Jack Langton
This question is a bit off the topic of Castlecomer, but I get the BEST information from the members on this list. I am researching the history of emigration requirements--what documentation was needed for our ancestors to get out of the country (besides money) -such as passports, papers, permissions, etc. Anyone know of a good source for that topic in Ireland? I do have some sources for England generally but not Ireland specifically. For example, did our Castlecomer ancestors simply leave the Wandesforde estate and" jump" on a ship? Did they need permission Or papers from Wandesforde? From the government? Thanks for any sources, Deb Deborah Large Fox Help! I am visiting the Castlecomer area next weekend for several weeks. I am seeking contact with any local person with any knowledge of the Scarf/Scharf/Scariff family of Baunreagh and Ridge, Old Leighlin parish, Co. Carlow who are known to have resided in Moneenroe, Donaguile, Castlecomer and Coolcullen before 1820 when they emigrated to the Ottawa Valley, Canada. I particularly wish to access any birth, death, marriage records which may still be viewed in Castlecomer. Any names, addresses or phone contacts would be appreciated. Thank you... Hi Elaine, It doesn't seem that long since i've been sending in the death notices. The Irish Independent does have a death log, don't know how far back, it's at http://announcements.independent.ie /deaths Dennis Walsh has a good site at _www.irelandoldnews.com/obits_ (http://www.irelandoldnews.com/obits) The Castlecomer obits I sent in would be in our Castlecomer list archives, but I can't say exactly when, i'm afraid. _http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/IRL/IRL-KIL-CASTLECOMER.html_ (http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/IRL/IRL-KIL-CASTLECOMER.html) Jack Langton

C.B. Wandesforde. According to the report, Mr. O'Reilly, who carried a fowling piece, had fired at a crow on a tree, when the gamekeeper came up to demand the gun, which Mr. O'Reilly refused to give him, whereupon the gamekeeper instantly shot him dead. Can you give us a little more direction as to the type of information needed, since you do seem to have quite a bit of info already. Have you posted your search to any other mailing lists/news letters? Have you searched the Castlecomer list archives, i'm sure you'd come up with numerous references to these names. Jack Langton
Hi David These names are relevant to the Castlecomer area. The Phelans and the bBropheys been the easiest to research there been less of them identifiable if you were trying to Identifi more relatives. When the Brenans have a nickname it can make quite a differrance. There were some Brophys and Brennans transtported in 1834. I was wondering if any (probably USA) list members might be attending the National (US) Genealogy Society conference in Salt Lake next week? I would love to meet any that might be there. I will be attending the Irish classes that will be given, except perhaps any that are given at 8 in the morning, I cannot guarantee my showing up at any event whatsoever before late morning LOL I will be going out to SLC a few days early to research in the library. There is a fairly recent photo of me on my blog, so either let me know before this weekend if you will be there or spot me in the classes.
