    2. Gary Cantwell
    3. Deb, My Cantwell clan came from 'Comer as miners, we postulate to work in one of the mines around Cass township, Schuylkill County, PA. When I chart the average age of the families, the men and their families were all long lived. Some listed their jobs as engineers (and possibly not in coal dust all day). I expect the mine management was hiring the experienced in technical roles from Ireland mines during a downturn and the famine in many parts of Ireland. Sláinte. Gary -----Original Message----- From: irl-kil-castlecomer-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-kil-castlecomer-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Deborah Fox Sent: Friday, September 17, 2010 2:55 PM To: irl-kil-castlecomer@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL-KIL-CASTLECOMER] Comer miners to Schuylkill Co. PA USA I just received from a cousin (and fellow Castlecomer researcher) what is for me an exciting discovery--a list of 1850-52 wages and work details for my Richard LARGE (born in Gorteen 1826) from a mine near Tuscarora, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Evidently, the miners often formed teams, and some of these teams are listed. Since other Comer families emigrated to this area at the same time (some on the same ship) as my LARGE's, I will list some of the other names just in case they are Castlecomer people. If any list member spots as ancestral name, please let me know. I have already found one other possible Castlecomer area name: TOBIN. I had found a LARGE and a TOBIN living in proximity to each other in the Comer area back in the early 1800's, which seems to verify that some of the Comer families emigrated or settled together. The other names listed: BROWNE, HARRIS, HOLERN, Henry SOMERS, and Charles MILES. My Richard Large, his brother John, the man "Tobin", and Henry Somers were all listed as "miners." My guess is that these men rose from laborer to miner quickly because they had worked in the Comer mines and were therefore experienced. Another theory to be researched! 3. Pat, Did you scroll down under the "advanced search" blank boxes? When I plugged in "Castlecomer" in the simple search, it returned the advanced search page, but with 5 returns for "Castlecomer" below. I have found good results by plugging in names of the estates rather than townland names, e.g., "Wandesforde" instead of Castlecomer. I have also narrowed results by adding "coal" or "road" in the advanced search area. Be aware, however, that the results will only be a description and location of the record--not the original record. However, I find the descriptions pretty good, and I hoping to "build my case" for going to some of the English archives one day to find Castlecomer records. Many of the descriptions of the records are detailed to the point of including names, which can be helpful to family history researchers. RE: the Wandesforde estate--some of the records that were referred to in the NLI finding aid (coal and estate records from the 1700's) are actually in Yorkshire, which might prove valuable to those of us whose miner ancestors might have been sent back and forth to Yorkshire/Kilkenny coal mines. 3. I was reminded of this site by a gentleman on the Tyrone list and wanted to share it because it contains information about the Wandesforde estate (and others). It is a search engine for the holdings of the network of UK archives. When I was at the NLI archives last year, one of the librarians used this site to locate for me some records about the Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny area which were not at the NLI but in Yorkshire, England. It might prove helpful to researchers of estates where, like Wandesforde, the lord owned estates in England and in Ireland. The strikers, who are demanding increased pay, remained in the mineshaft throughout the night, and have now been underground for 24 hours. Womenfolk brought food to the pithead, and surface crews, who are picketing the mine, sent it down the shaft. About 1000 miners are involved in strikes at CASTLECOMER and also at Arigna colliery in County Leitrim, where the strikers are remaining on the surface.

You can also use a lot of online databases by joining the State Library of the state in which you reside. It is free. I have friends who do all their genealogy research in public libraries in Brisbane. This may also apply in Britain and Ireland. 1. [IRL-KIL-CASTLECOMER] Who was WH HUGHES? Rector?
    2. Deborah Fox
    3. I am thinking perhaps a WH HUGHES might be the key to my burial mystery. I have not been able to find my Thomas Large in the St. Mary's COI graveyard despite finding this entry in the set of books from St. Mary's at the RCB Library: Page 1, "Burials 1833-4," entry #9 THOMAS LARGE Abode=Ardra, buried 14 January 1834, age 64 years, Ceremony performed by W.H. HUGHES. On the side is a note: "delivered an address." I saw no note about Thomas being buried anywhere else but St. Mary's in Castlecomer. But now I am thinking, who was E.H. HUGHES? If anyone has access to any St. Mary's Church history, I would be curious to see if he was the rector in 1834? Thanks, Jack, for the kind words re the blog and for those links. I am always on the lookout for new British sites to see if I can track some of the Castlecomer miners in the early 1800's to Wandesforde mines near Yorkshire. Deb Deborah Large Fox Help! 2. Hi Deb, Never ran across anything that would indicate a connection between St. Mary's COI church in Castlecomer and the Castlecomer RC church, as far as burials in Mallardstown, but who knows? I'll keep an eye out. There was serendipity involved though; in searching the _www.cuil.com_ (http://www.cuil.com) search engine, and using terms like Mallardstown cemetery and variations, I did run across a couple of useful links. _http://allenglishrecords.com_ (http://allenglishrecords.com) and _http://Londonfhc.org_ (http://Londonfhc.org) The latter is the London based Mormon FHC, I find it much easier to navigate than the SLC FHC. Continued good luck with your blog. It's very good. Jack Langton

    1. [IRL-KIL-CASTLECOMER] St. Mary's COI burials
    2. Deborah Fox
    3. Was there a practice of burying members of St. Mary's (Church of Ireland in Castlecomer) in Mallardstown in the early 1800's? I just found another burial record on the IFHF database that lists a burial in Mallardstown for a St. Mary's (COI) of Castlecomer person. This one is for a Jane Jackson of Moneenroe in March, 1842. The database also had Mallardstown listed as a burial place for my Thomas Large (also of St. Mary's in Castlecomer, died Oct. 1834). When I was at the RCB library, I saw the parish registers, and did not see any reference in the book to Thomas being buried in Mallardstown (there was a note that the rector spoke at the burial but did not say the burial was elsewhere than Castlecomer). So I had assumed the IFHF database mention of Mallardstown to be a mistake. But now two such burials? Was there a connection between the two parishes? Has anyone else found Mallardstown burials for their Castlecomer people? Deb Deborah Large Fox Help! The Faerie Folk Hid My Ancestors! http://irishfamilyresearch.blogspot.com
