MS. H. HENNESSY. The communities of Castlecomer, Muckalee and Kells are in mourning following the death of Helen Hennessy (Nee O’Gorman), Damerstown. She went to her eternal reward just as she had lived ever so quietly and peacefully in the company of those who meant so much to her at St. Lukes Hospital, Kilkenny. Highly respected in the community she came to live in the town in the early 80’s and together with her husband Pat quickly established a flourishing business on The Square. Fondly remembered for her nursing duties at Castlecomer District Hospital she built up a rapport with both patients and staff. Always caring and extremely generous of her time she was never found wanting whenever the call came, whether it was supporting various community organisations or extra curricular activity as Treasurer of the Friends of Castlecomer District Hospital. In a moving eulogy Director of Nursing at Castlecomer District Hospital Ms. Julie Meally paid a fitting tribute and in doing so summed up the feeling of the congregation present. “Helen had the attributes of a leader and the kindness and sensitivity of a good nurse. Patients loved her and trusted her implicitly. She was a Nurse, a Clinical Nurse, Manager 1 and a Manager. Helen loved being a Nurse and her patients knew it. She loved them and they loved her. She put her heart, soul and mind into her work.” There were huge crowds at the obsequies and how fitting it was to see such a representative guard of honour comprising of past and present staff members of Castlecomer District Hospital and also members of the Friends of Castlecomer District Hospital, accompany the cortege as its made its final journey to the Church. She was laid to rest in the Parish Cemetery after Requiem Mass celebrated in the Church of the Immaculate Conception by Fr. Larry Wallace P.P. Muckalee (Chief Celebrant) assisted by Msgr. Michael Ryan P.P. Castlecomer ; Fr. Willie Hennessy P.P. Castletown, Co. Laoise ; Fr. John Delaney P.P. Kilrossanty ; Fr. Dan O’Gorman, St. Columbans, Dangan Park, Navan ; Fr. Tom Corcoran C.C. Castlecomer ; Fr. Liam Shore P.E. Castlecomer ; Fr. Martin Ryan Columban Father ; Fr. Tom McGree C.C. Ballyouskill. She is survived by her husband Pat ; daughter Helena ; son John ; brothers Rory, Dick ; sisters Mamie, Ann, Daphne, Peggy ; son-in-law Ronan ; daughter-in-law Kate ; grandchildren Aoibhinn, Shauna, Micháel, Joshua, Samual ; sisters in law ; brothers in law ; nieces ‘ nephews ; other relatives and a large circle of friends. Hi Deborah I will go over my records. I cant say as I noticed it but I did feel it was an odd family in that it seemd to me to be an English name. They seemed from something else I saw to be landlords of some minor kind. My Crennans were fierce Catholics and I dont think they would have gone near or let my ggrandfather go near a Protestant. Even for generations after in Australia it was not done. The death has occurred of Paddy MURTAGH of Ridgewood, New Jersey, USA and formerly of Castlecomer, Kilkenny Died earlier this year. A Memorial Mass will take place on Monday 22 November, at 7.30pm in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Castlecomer. Date published: Saturday, November 20, 2010
Hi Deborah I haven't done much research on Jackson but I know they married into our Crennan family. A Jackson woman variously named as Johannah, Julia or Judith (and one time as Norah) married Edward Crennan in Castlecomer in 1834. I think she must have been known as Julia as her female grandchildren here seemed to be all named that for her. One of the Jacksons also married into a Castlecomer Collier family. A Collier descendant became the Premier of the state of Western Australia in 1924. There is a Peter Collier in the govt there now - I will write to him to see if he knows anything about the family esp Jackson side. I think there was likely only one Jackson family in the Castelcomer area. I never found many when I went through the whole records of LDS. Elaine, Since you mentioned looking for JACKSON in the LDS films, I assume these were RC records you have looked at? If so, do any of them note that the Jackson was non-Catholic (I have seen the notation "A-Catholicus" used to denote non-RC)? I am finding my Jane Jackson records in the records of St. Mary's Church of Ireland in Castlecomer. I am wondering if there could be a couple of Jackson families in pre-1850 Castlecomer, perhaps one RC, the other CIre? Deb Deborah Large Fox Help! Any JACKSON researchers on this list? 1. Specifically, with a Jane Jackson born late 1700's? Who married either a Thomas Large or a James Walsh or James Lysaught? Or, a Jane by-marriage-Jackson? Am suddenly awash in Jane Jackson records and am trying to straighten out if I have found one, two, or three Jane Jacksons. The records all point to Castlecomer and the Church of Ireland. Thanks! I knew there were "faraway places with strange sounding names" in the Castlecomer area (Geneva and Moscow and even Korea) but never knew why. I enjoyed both article and pics, esp. pics of the pub at Newtown cross, and there was even a partial pic of a cousin's house. Jack Langton
Maire, I am looking for some family members that went to America, but I don't have any specific place names. I believe it was probably about 1860-1885, as my GGrandmother came to Australia in 1875. Do you have any lists of emigrants from New Ross or other local areas to America moreso than Canada. Their names were Obadiah and Kathleen/Katherine Gary Parker > Maire Downey <mairedowney31@eircom.net> wrote: > > Deborah, > Geneva Barracks was situated down in the south west of Co. Thanks, Maire and others, for the information. My searches first turned up the Geneva mining pit, so I was thrown a bit about the barracks until Maire alerted me. Deb Deborah Large Fox Help! The Faerie Folk Hid My Ancestors! http://irishfamilyresearch.blogspot.com
Deborah, Geneva Barracks was situated down in the south west of Co. Wexford, near New Ross from where many ships sailed, particularly to Newfoundland, but also to North America. I have a list of passengers sailing from New Ross to Quebec in 1831. Jim, your post hits another family story right on the mark--that one of the Castlecomer LARGE ancestors served in the West Indies. This is too much of coincidence for me to ignore, so I am going back on the trail of Huguenots in the Comer area. Do you know where the Geneva Barracks were located? Any information helpful.
