Hi Deb, Your mail came through fine and is already in the February archives. There had been glitches lately in many of the Roots-web lists, causing me to have to re-sub, but I think that the present Castlecomer list quiet is just midwinter ennui, brought on by too-much-staring-out-the-window-at-the-snowbanks. Jack Langton
I have had some difficulty getting mail from another Rootsweb mailing list, and found that there has been glitches with multiple internet providers that has been bouncing people from Rootsweb mail. I was wondering if this list was simply quiet or if I have not been getting messages from it and will have to re-sub. Deb Deborah Large Fox Help! Thanks, Jack for the link to that song! This is a bit off-list, but since the topic was mentioned, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania has determined that the hole in a skull found at Duffy's Cut was caused by a bullet wound. Life was often dangerous and deadly for the Irish in the Philadelphia area in the 1830's and 1840's. Deb Deborah Large Fox Help! Hi Debbie and all, I saw this on another list. There is an excellent song concerning Duffy's Cut on YouTube, sung by Christy Moore. Good film quality, good sound, good song - though grim. Go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZDerJw93mE&playnext=1&list=PLB4FDBE669742C3A3&index=25 Jack Langton
Tom, Many thanks. I will forward your information to my friend. Looks very close to his family. Deb Deborah Large Fox Help! The Faerie Folk Hid My Ancestors! http://irishfamilyresearch.blogspot.com
Deborah - Just the Brennan bit: I have the following RC baptisms for the children of Thomas Brennan and Catherine Coogan Margaret 1830 Oct 22 Moneenroe William 1832 Oct 15 Illegible John 1835 Jul 12 Moneenroe Mary 1840 Nov 29 Moneenroe Richard 1843 Nov 5 Keirs Gate (Keirs Gate is in Moneenroe, known as Keirs Cross nowadays) These are from the Clogh and Moneenroe parish records. Prior to 1830-31, there was only one RC parish, centred in Clogh. After this, the parish was split into Clogh/Moneenroe and Castlecomer. There are several cases of Thomas Brennans married to Catherine XXXXX, but the only one with a child Richard born around 1842 is this one. On Bradley: I have no Patrick Bradleys in the records at all, but then again I only have the RC records. Bradleys around Castlecomer are mixed, some families are Catholic, some Protestant. Regards, Tom
I misspelled BRADLEY in my last post. Sorry, I need new glasses, I can’t see the computer screen with or without glasses nowadays! Arrghh! Deb Deborah Large Fox Help! The Faerie Folk Hid My Ancestors! http://irishfamilyresearch.blogspot.com
I am on a bit of a fishing expedition for a friend. All of the families mentioned were in the mining country of Eastern Pennsylvania by 1850. I think they emigrated around 1844. My friend is not sure that the families are from the Castlecomer area, but there are clues in his research that lead me to take a guess that they are Castlecomer area families. Here is what I know: Thomas and Catherine (unknown maiden name) BRENNAN, both born in Ireland about 1800-1810, four known children born in Ireland, one of which was Richard, born about 1842. I haven’t yet found him in any baptismal records, but I have not yet completed that task. Patrick and Ellen (unknown maiden name) BRADLEY, Patrick born about 1820. Ellen’s second marriage in Pennsylvania around 1862 was to Martin MAHER, who was born about 1835 in Ireland. Just the names alone in a cluster would make me think Castlecomer, and they settled among Castlecomer immigrants in PA mining country. Please let me know if any of the names match anyone’s research. Hi Deb, Thanks very much for the heads-up on the pics posted by John Coffey, I enjoyed them very much, having met and socialized with not a few of the subjects, including John in his very homey pub at the Clogh cross. One person I didn't get to meet is Mary Whelan, who shows up in the 1901 Castlecomer census compiled in the late '90s by Tom Delaney, living in Clogh at the superannuated age of 114. Her daughter was a mere 60. Mr. Delaney attached three exclamation points after Mary's age, perhaps he was a little dubious. Right at the moment we're hunkered down waiting for the blizzard to blow itself out, but as long as the furnace holds out we'll be as happy as Larry, another old Castlecomer saying. Regards, Jack Langton
John Coffey has added a new video to his You Tube channel. It is a collection of old and new photographs of Clough and its people, including a piece about a Mrs. Whelan who lived to be 114 years old, might be of interest to any Castlecomer Whelan researchers. Hope everyone is enjoying the Christmas and New Years holidays! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooMlHv1y-rQ&feature=sub Deb Deborah Large Fox Help! What a wonderful idea about the descendants attending the Mass in the cemetery. I had to chuckle over Tom’s comment about how his Church of Ireland ancestors in St. Mary’s would feel about an RC descendant. If all the descendants of both my RC and Church of Ireland Castlecomer ancestors attended, we would have a United Nations of colors and religions gathered there, with Jewish, Buddhist, and pagan religions added to the mix. To think such a tribe began when two religions collided in Castlecomer. My grandfather would often tell his children that the religious strife between the Large and Kavanagh families in Castlecomer caused financial and emotional ruin to the family. But, I think it passed on a legacy of diversity, and the family remains very close-knit.. My Jewish father in law once joked that my ancestors passed on a marrying-outside-the-religion-gene. <grin> Deb Deborah Large Fox Help! I don't believe Tom's C of I ancestors in St. Mary's cemetery would have any objections to RC descendants as they the dead of both traditions have been lying next to each other for centuries in that graveyard. Happy Christmas to all.
