I have been searching for the Clough/Castlecomer RC church records in the new Ancestry collection of Irish RC records. I thought that the database contains all the RC records that were filmed, and if so, shouldn’t it include the Comer ones? I’ve tried to find out what parishes are in the database. I’ve also tried all sorts of search terms. Of course, I could be missing something. Has anyone on the list searched Ancestry for the records? I’ve even tried broad location searches, such as “Kilkenny” and can’t seem to find any of the records. Need help! Deb Deborah Large Fox Help! “Work in Progress” is how National Coalminers Group Vice-Chairman Seamus Walsh and his colleague Peter Kealy have described the current situation regarding applications for compensation for former miners to the Department of Social Protection. Seamus Walsh has been the catalyst locally in lobbying to ensure recognition for all of the mining fraternity and their widows. Cllr. Maurice Shortall who is also a member of the National Coalminers Group is glad to see light at the end of what has been a very long tunnel. “ It is extremely important that all information sought by the Department be responded to as soon as possible, this is in relation to completed application forms and also seeking further medical evidence. To date a substantial number of miners have received payments on top of their present pension entitlements ” said Cllr. Shortall. Date of this item added : 2011-09-12 From the Castlecomer Forum
MRS. CATHERINE DOWLING. Once again the brevity of life is all too apparent with the death of Catherine Dowling (Nee Connery), Croghtenclogh, Bilboa and late of Donaguile, Castlecomer. She went to her eternal reward at Waterford Regional Hospital having battled illness with great fortitude and dignity for almost two years. For over 20 years she was Secretary initially to Dr. Paddy McEneaney and then to Dr. Tom Lynch in Castlecomer. She was the point of contact for hundreds of patients whom she treated with the utmost discretion and professionalism. Catherine packed so much into her short life, a great mother she lived for her family. In his homily Fr. Delaney spoke of her serenity and wonderful attributes which reached out to so many across North East Kilkenny. There were unprecedented crowds at the obsequies which bore testimony of the high regard in which the family is held in the area. She was laid to rest in Coon Cemetery after Requiem Mass celebrated in St. Brigids Church by Fr. John Delaney C.C. Coon (Chief Celebrant) assisted by Fr. Larry Wallace P.P. Muckalee ; Msgr. Michael Ryan P.P. Castlecomer ; Fr. Martin Tobin P.P. Clogh ; Fr. Dan Carroll Team Leader St. Patricks, Kilkenny ; Fr. Paddy Comerford (USA & Ardra) ; Fr. Maurice Shortall (Brazil & Croghtenclogh) ; Fr. Liam Shore P.E. Castlecomer ; Fr. Jimmy O’Reilly (Portlaoise & Newtown, Crettyard). She is survived by her husband John ; daughters Alison, Orla ; mother Catherine ; brothers Eamon, Michael ; sister Martina ; other relatives and a host of friends. Many thanks to you Jack and Maire for this information. I am really excited to make my first visit to Castlecomer in a few weeks - I have only recently made a breakthrough on the Kennedy/Trump side of my family after several years of reseach. Maire - thanks for the guide to RIC site - it was from http://irishconstabulary.com that I had details of George Kennedy's service in Castlecomer. Kindest regards and many thanks once again. There was a recent post on a Co. Laois message board about miners going back and forth between the Castlecomer/Laois coal mines and Scotland. Thought I would inquire to see if any list members have done any research in England or Scotland (Wales, perhaps?) of Comer families who might have gone back and forth? The Wandesforde mine journals have many references of men being brought from England to work in the estate mines. But I have not been able to do any research in England on the subject. Just fishing around here to see if anyone has? Deb Deborah Large Fox Help! The Faerie Folk Hid My Ancestors! http://irishfamilyresearch.blogspot.com
I will be moving from the Philadelphia region to Toronto, Canada, in the fall. I am hoping this relocation will be a chance to dig into some Comer to Canada records. My Large family from Castlecomer came to Canada before making their way to Pennsylvania. Any list members familiar with the Toronto genealogy “scene,” I would love to hear from you. (Any relocation advice from Canadian list members welcome also). Wish me luck, this is going to be a big life change for me. Deb Deborah Large Fox Help!
