    1. [IRL-KERRY] New Kerry Genealogical Site --- IrelandXO Reaching Out -- Messages for/about people from County Kerry

    3. I haven't used this site yet, but it seems interesting and apparently has lots of contributions from people in Ireland and Kerry. Although the .com domain suffix indicates that it may be based in the US. According to the "About Us" below, the concept is for people in the townlands, cities and counties to help trace all those who have left over the years. "IrelandXO currently has over 500 parishes engaged with active volunteers assisting in answering questions and queries and are continuing our rapid roll out to all areas in 2013. Check if your parish has a profile here" That applies to all the counties in Ireland. And, since I couldn't find Knocknagoshel in County Kerry, I'm assuming by "parish" that they mean the Civil Parish system that was used in the 19th century and so importantly for Griffiths and other searches. I guess that would make sense since Roman Catholic and Church of Ireland parishes would be different and more confusing to people. I did just check on the Civil Parish of Castleisland and saw a nice google map with Townlands identified on it. There are about 50 messages on it, all quite recent, from yesterday, to about 18 months ago. There is a users manual that you can download. http://www.irelandxo.com/resources I did see what I believe is a minor error in their explanation of Irish population figures. They say that the Irish census returns before 1861 were destroyed in a fire. I believe that they were "pulped" beceause somebody in the government decided that they weren't needed and the storage space was expensive. It was the Irish Wills in the Four Courts building that were burned during the Civil War in the 1920s. http://www.irelandxo.com/node/69/messages?page=1 About Ireland Reaching Out The Ireland Reaching Out (IrelandXO) programme is based on a simple idea; instead of waiting for people of Irish descent to trace their roots, we go the other way. Working through voluntary effort at a townland, village and parish level in Ireland, we identify who left those areas, and trace them and their descendants worldwide. IrelandXO offers a free service and it is a not for profit organisation. If your ancestors came from Ireland and you would like to find out more about them, we in the IrelandXO programme will endeavor to help you as part of your research. This reverse genealogy entails the tracing and recording of all the people who left Ireland and seeking out their living descendants worldwide. Those identified or recognised as persons of Irish heritage or affiliation are invited to become part of a new extended Irish society. IrelandXO offers an extraordinary opportunity for local parish communities to extend the numbers of people committed to their parish by inviting its own Diaspora worldwide to become involved in their place of origin. This programme is an opportunity to boost tourism and bring economic benefit to the area. IrelandXO currently has over 500 parishes engaged with active volunteers assisting in answering questions and queries and are continuing our rapid roll out to all areas in 2013. Check if your parish has a profile here Throughout the expansion of the programme we endeavour to respond to all enquiries even in communities where we have yet to confirm a volunteer presence. Good luck in your searching. Share this site with your other genie friends. Ray Marshall Kerry List Administrator in balmy Minneapolis
