    3. Steve, Oh dear, mea maxima culpa, I meant Flying Columns - watching too many old cop dramas on the goggle box - one cousin was a great friend of Tom Barry. And yes, our family knew nothing about members being in the RIC, and another was a Lighthouse Keeper, off Tory Island and Mayo ( was that as bad as the police? ).     3. I hadn't even noticed that - given the context, I read it as flying columns anyway! I'm not sure about the social status of lighthouse keepers - I don't know if there was enough of them to merit much mention. I suppose they were just seen as 'the Establishment' as opposed to being 'forces of oppression'. Steve.
