    3. Dear Diane, I got an email from Australia, you are looking for your Scannell roots. There are very few Scannells in the Rathmore area.......the ones who were related to me, all emigrated to England, they lived near Shrone lake, a few miles south west of here. Actually the only one who came back to Rathmore was Bridie Scannell and she died last week, I was at the wake with my son. Bridie's sisters came to the wake, fro England, all of them are feeble. Bridie was the youngest....and she was well into her 70's. Mary the eldest used to phone or write to me, but she is blind and deaf now and she was the only one who knew who was related to whom! That Scannell family were reared by their grandfather, Humphrey Moynihan as their parents died young, Humphrey was a first cousin of my grandmother's......my grandmother was a Dennehy. There is no one in the house in Shrone now. If you get in touch with the parish priest in Rathmore, he would let you see the marriage/baptismal records...........many, many years ago there was a fire in the church and many of the pages could be missing......I will be in Millstreet library next Wednesday and I will look up the Casey books......re the Scannells. As for the name Moynihan......it is too numerous to mention! My Dad's name was John Moynihan, he emigrated to NYC in 1926, met and married my Mom...a Co Clare woman. My Dad decided to rear his family in Ireland so my 2 brothers and i plus my Mom came to Rathmore, and lived with my uncle and grandmother.......we went back to NYc, I was in 5th grade there.....when my Dad decided to send us back to Ireland...again to Raheen. He kept working there as he wanted to get his pension.....I went out in 1956, but I didn't like the idea of winding up in an apartment and marrying someone out there.......I returned to Ireland, met and married my husband....Humphrey Moynihan...I didn't have to change my name! Funnily enough my gt. gran and my aunt Eily did the same!....... I remember in NYC, the postmen could not pronounce Moynihan, they always said, " Monahan" . Probably that is why is is often spelled wrong. You could look up the books in Millstreet library, it is about 5 or 6 miles from Rathmore......I am there on Wednesdays and Saturdays.........volunteering!!! Wednesday, the Spoken Irish group come in and we speak Gaelic, or read books out loud in Gaelic.....Saturday is for the kids, stories etc it is great to get kids talking and asking questions and watching them grow from babyhood to read a book!!!!! I wasn't at the library today as the librarian, Breda O Leary took a day off and another lady fills in for her.......I never learned to drive, too many men in the house.....4 sons, so thanks to Breda I get to the library twice a week, good fun too! There was a lot of emigration in the Rathmore area and it's surroundings, the oldest son got the farm, the rest emigrated, or became priests or nuns......I think there were 3 nuns in the Scannells of Shrone, one of them was at her sister's wake last week. The Scannells that I knew emigrated to England, not the USA. I remember the eldest on of the, Florence, he used to come and kill the pigs for my uncle, and his brothers worked for my uncle before they went to England, I remember John and Christie being in Raheen. I was very lucky that my grandmother lived a very long life and had all her marbles, she talked about everyone and every thing.......my eldest, Malachy, was reared on her knee, but when Mary arrived, my gran was too feeble. Keep well and i wish you a safe and happy trip, Kathleen Moynihan ps I tried to send this to Diane, but it won't travel....maybe you can send it to her.
