    1. Re: [IRL-KERRY] IRL-KERRY Digest, Vol 8, Issue 208
    2. My great-grandfather was born in County Kerry, Glenflesk area, in a town/region called Old Forge/Ironmills. He emigrated to the US in 1879. My great-aunts kept a blue piece of paper written on by PP John Shanahan in 1874 (County Kerry), which attests to my great-grandfather's character. It says that his character was irreproachable and he gave his date of birth (18 February,1855). He also signed it as "Parish Priest , Glenflesk and Barradurre". When I was trying to find out if he indeed was baptised there, I sent a letter to the current Parish Priest (in 1998) who confirmed his baptism. I had asked him about Barradurre and he said it was really called Barraduff (even though it clearly says "Barrdurre".) So Pete Schermerhorn, my neighbor to the west may be right about the rr vs the ff's. But couldn't the f be because of the old English style where an "s" was a subscript (going above and below the line as in lower-case p, as an example?). And funny you should mention Millstreet, my great-grandfather, summoned his wife to be, Julia Lehane of Millstreet, County Cork, to be with him in Massachusetts. They married in Northampton, MA. I hope this helps to find out more about Garraneduff! ~Patsy PS, it you ever go to Dublin, look for the Little Museum of Dublin. A copy of my Great-grandfather's Tin-Type and of Father John Shanahan's 1874 testament to my great-grandfather's character can be seen there. ----- Original Message ----- From: irl-kerry-request@rootsweb.com To: irl-kerry@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, December 20, 2013 3:00:04 AM Subject: IRL-KERRY Digest, Vol 8, Issue 208 Today's Topics: 1. [snip] The location is written as Grandurr on a Millstreet parish baptismal record. === Cheryl, As Marge mentioned, there aren't many "close" placenames in Co. Kerry (or in Cork, for that matter). But I think her two Kerry locations are too far from the Millstreet parish to be probable. One is out on the Dingle peninsula near Dingle town, and the other is 4 miles WSW of Castleisland town. I have a great location in mind, but there's a wee problem......it would require an odd mis-reading of 19th century script - a double "f" read as a double "r". It seems unlikely, I'll admit. But the townland of Garraneduff is only a mile or so East of Millstreet town, in Co. Cork........close enough for a convenient baptism. I didn't find any truly suitable candidates in Co. Cork, other than this dubious one. I'm not sure how an "ff" script could look like an "rr". Perhaps someone with more experience in reading Irish script of the period could comment on this. It really does sound unlikely, I must admit. But it's all I've got. I must admit I did not look to see where Millstreet was in comparison to the place names that I found. Also, consider how the name might be interpreted by a priest new to the area if the person did not pronounce it clearly enough.
