Hello Chris, I also have ancestors from the Ballymacelligott Parish. They immigrated to New Zealand. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~fianna/county/kerry/kerrc.html outlines the various Parishes and the dates of records held for each Parish. Ballymacelligott Parish Catholic Church records commence 1868. Records prior to this date for this Parish are no longer in existence. Some reports I have read said this may have been due to a fire about 1866 that destroyed all records. In the 1940 Probate of my 80 year old great grandmother in NZ, one of her daughters signed an affidavit saying she was in possession of her mother's Baptism Certifcate dated 7th October 1860 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Ballymacelligott, County Kerry, Ireland. So although there was a Baptism Certificate for my great grandmother from Ballymacelligott in 1860, that record does not appear on the http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords Kerry Parish Records site. Nor the c1850 - 1868 records for any of the siblings of my great grandparents. I have no doubts they were all Baptised - the records are just no longer in existence. The above may be one reason why you can not locate pre 1868 records for your family. Best wishes in your research. They were both RC and resided on a farm located in the Townland of Ashill (Ash Hill), Ballymacelligot in the mid to late 1800s. I have not been able to locate church or civil records of their births or marriage. They both appear on the 1901 census living on the Ashill farm. James' age is listed as 80 and Mary's as 79. Mary died in 1902. Her death certificate reflects her age as 84. James is not listed on the 1911 census, however repeated searches for his death record at the GRO were negative. Also residing at the Ashill farm were James’ and Mary's adult daughter Margaret White Spillane, Margaret’s husband Patrick Spillane, born in 1865 in Killorglin, and their seven children: Hanoria M. Spillane 1891-1980 (emigrated to Boston in 1912), Julia Celia Spillane 1893 – 1972 (emigrated to Boston), Thomas Spillane 1894 – 1947, James Spillane 1894 – 1975, Denis Spillane 1897 – 1969, Mary Spillane 1899 – 1940, Katherine Spillane 1901 – 1938 and Bridget Spillane 1906 – 1970 (emigrated to Boston). Margaret died in 1944 and her death record reflects her age as 79. Searches at the GRO for Margaret’s birth record were negative. Any information concerning birth, marriage and death dates / records of my ancestors listed above would be greatly appreciated.
