I don't know where in Wisconsin you're referring to, but there certainly were Catholic Churches in WI long before 1870. The cathedral of St. John in Milwaukee was begun in 1847. I have John's certificate of naturalization and have worked with WI to find the original forms he filed, but again, to no avail. I just emailed the church he went to for the last 30 years before he died and asked if they have any information on him--even the parish where he was baptized would be helpful. They were in Marinette in the 1870 census and indicated they had just married that May. I found their children's baptism records at Holy Family Parish in Marinette and they told me about the traveling priests and said there wasn't a Catholic church in WI in 1870. Do you know if St. John's is close to Marinette? Maybe there is still hope of finding a marriage record. Thanks! Hi Donna and list, This URL gives some guidance on researching matters in the Green Bay Diocese. Marinette is located in that Diocese and is not close to Milwaukee (St. John's cathedral) It is located on the Wisconsin/Michigan border and has a "twin" city of Menominee, Michigan. Hope this is of some help to you. http://www.gbdioc.org/pg/resourcesArchives.tpl Regards, Trish Donna Russell <donnarussell5@comcast.net> wrote: They were in Marinette in the 1870 census and indicated they had just married that May.
