Greetings all, I have been helping some non-related Wheltons, or at least not related back for 6 generations, who have an ancestor who settled in New Brunswick and then moved on to Michigan. I was wondering if there was a port in New Brunswick that numbers of Irish went to, or if these Wheltons might have moved to New Brunswick after landing in another port. I know next to nothing about Canadian ports and any information would be useful. Thanks! Hi Mary Ellen: Have you any idea where in New Brunswick they may have settled? Back then we would have had two ports of entry; Miramichi and Saint John. Any Irish moving onto Central and Western Canada usually came through Miramichi; those staying in New Brunswick or moving onto the States usually came through Saint John. It doesn't hold true in every case of course, but those are the basic generalities. Let me know if you need anything further. My information about my unrelated Wheltons comes mostly from a document put together by James Whelton of Arvada, Co. in ??1970 or so?? I am not sure. But he contacted as many Whelton families as he could find, before the days of computers and typed up what I call "The Whelton Tome." It is a remarkable piece of work and I'm very glad I have it!! The Wheltons listed here seem to come from the parish of "New Bandon" New Brunswick and I have no idea where that is relative to any ports. My curiousity about them stemmed from the idea, if one group of Wheltons went to New Brunswick, I wonder if mine didn't go there and then head south to Salem, Mass since I haven't been able to find any records of their arrival in the US and although these two groups of Wheltons seem to be unrelated, they might have been cousins back in the late 1700s. I know more or less where my Wheltons came from - Clonakilty and I think, perhaps, Knocknageehy - but I have no idea where this other branch is from. I am including information from the unrelated Wheltons in case it "rings a bell" with anyone on the list.
