    1. [IRL-KERRY] Sullivan- Templenoe- Experience visiting the record office in Kenmare
    2. Hello Listers, The family I am researching 'came from Kenmare'...that's as close as I was able to determine their location. The name being Sullivan was absolutely a nightmare. Then, several months ago I found a W. W. I draft registration card for one of the family members that stated his birth location as Templenoe, Kerry, Ireland. What a find that was! All the others said 'Ireland' or 'Kerry, Ireland'. Recently, I visited Co. Kerry, Ireland. I went to the presbytery in the town of Kenmare.and met Father Crean His secretary, Elizabeth, was very accomodating in our search. We spent 2 hours searching through bith records and located 2 of 13 children that I was looking for. Wow, was I delighted! (I found out that they have no deaths records from about 1892 to the 1950's...they just didn't record them). Well, I also learned that the parents, John Sullivan and Jane Downing (who both signed with and X), lived in Poulagoppal. I said to Father Crean..."I have a map, can you show me where that is?". He said, "I don't think that it is on any map..but it is part of Templenoe area. It isn't a very nice name. It means "Horse's Anus". You can imagine how much I laughed as my traveling companion, John Sullivan (whose family I am working on), was seated beside me. He said that his son, a VP of Bank of America, would not be too happy to learn of this. Anyway, Elizabeth directed me to the Registry Office for Births etc for that region. Perhaps they could help me more. The office is at the Kenmare Hospital just down the road from Father Crean's residence. I went there and the secretary was very helpful. Through their Search Engine they were able to provide me with 6 birth certificates...6 children of John Sullivan and Jane Downing.....and all born in Poulagoppal! Each copy was 10 Euro. I did go to the Old Cemetery in Templenoe, on the banks of Kenmare Bay. The location is beautiful. The cemetery is in bad condition and all the old stones are unreadable, overgrown, moldy. The ground is very uneven, lumpy, and bumpy. My companion, in his middle 80's, remained in the car while I took some pictures of the location and searched for 'Sullivan's'. I'm sure my companion's relatives are buried there...but we'll never know for sure. I also went to the Old Cemetery in Kenmare, which is quite large. About 3/4 of it was 'kept up'. The other 1/4 needed to be week-wacked.....there's no way a lawn mower could work there. I was looking for Downing's.of which there were many. The fellow that was weed wacking at the Old Kenmare Cemetery told me that there was a woman who has transcribed the entire lot of cemetery stones. I told him that I would like to get in touch with her. He said her name was Sioban Tangney from Killowen...just outside Kenmare. Well, she had no phone listed in the book. I tried an internet search for her name...cemetery...every which way...but no luck. Have any of you listers ever heard of her, or know how to contact her??? She has a wealth of information that many could use. If anyone out there is researching the Sullivan's/ Downing's from Poulagoppal ;-)...Templenoe contact me. John Sullivan and Jane Downing had 13 children and 11 of them settled in Norwich CT. Ireland was just as beautiful as ever (my 4th trip). I did the Beara Peninsula twice! this time...going over the Healy Pass from each direction. Spectacular scemery as always. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
