>From The Kingdom Newspaper December 2007 O'Donoghue's tribute to the Liberator's descendant TRIBUTES have been paid following the death of a descendant of the Liberator Daniel O'Connell. The passing of Dr Dan O'Connell of Derrynane, London and Malaysia marked the end of an era, according to Ceann Comhairle John O'Donoghue. He was among many who extended sympathy to the family of the cancer specialist, who was cremated in London on Thursday. Dr O'Connell's ashes were brought to Caherdaniel on Friday where Mass was celebrated in the local parish church, with burial afterwards. "The passing of Dr Dan O Connell of Derrynane marks the end of another link with the great Daniel O Connell of Derrynane, who was the father of parliamentary democracy," said Deputy O'Donoghue. It should not be forgotten that the O'Connell family were great benefactors to the state, he added. They continued the tradition of public service as exemplified by the great Daniel O'Connell when they transferred ownership of the estate in Derrynane to the state.
