I know someone who got married there a couple of weeks ago. They are the official government agency in charge of BMD registration. The Genealogical centre hasn't offered a service for many a year. I was down there 2 or 3 years ago and they had been closed (to the public) for a long time. I was told that they had abandoned the idea of a "visitor" centre/shop/café, which was the original plan, and were hoping to relaunch as a web-based service, but that doesn't seem to have happened. I have heard/seen nothing in the local media about the place since, either. The main purpose of the centre was to take people off unemployment assistance and have them "transcribe" records onto computers as part of a training programme. There didn't seem to be any genealogist employed, and I wouldn't be too confident about the quality of the transcriptions, if they still exist.
