Have recently discovered that a great great Grandfather in Cork was not named Daniel, as I had assumed, but Jeremiah. No Jeremiahs with the relevant surname appear in the family townland ( or even parish ) in the Griffith's Valuation. Which rather stumped me.... but then I thought again of the background to all this. All the family were small farmers, and I knew that there was a great uncle with the name Daniel, brother to my great grandmother ( born about 1840 ), and given that the family may well have worked the farm together, but only Jeremiah's father Daniel ( age in his sixties?? ) would have appeared on the Valuation List - as HE was the one that was responsible for paying the rent on the farm, but sharing the place with his sons and their families. Does this make sense? It may answer the conundrum of the "nonappearance" of people that you would expect to find in these lists. Also a quick reference to an event that does not seem to have appeared on your boards. In October our Government here in the UK removed all the paper index ledgers to the old post 1837 birth, marriage and death lists from the wonderful Family History Centre in Islington, London, which anybody and everybody could look up at any time to find details of their family members in England or Wales. They had PROMISED that these would be freely available online, but, having sent the work out abroad, this is now hopelessly behind, and will not happen now for years and years. You now have to go to the National Archives in Kew ( much more difficult to get to than the Family History Centre ) and peer at microfilm. Anybody who has researched microfilm will know what this means. A great shame..... and this information belongs to the public - not the Government. Mary

We tend to think Of Griffiths as a census because it is referred to as a "census substitute." but it is a property tax valuation and tax due list with owners (usually) and lessees of land listed. In a few cases you will see lessees subletting land, often to members of their family.<<<] <Second paragraph deleted as I have no information on the subject.> Ray Marshall IRL-Kerry list Minneapolis, Minnesota
