Dear Fellow Kerry Researchers, I wrote the original request for information regarding DNA, specifically, mtDNA testing. WOW, what responses-both on and off line. On line, some, such as Jim, have been immensely informative, and off line, some have expressed great pleasure in the results of their personal testing. I think we have all benefitted from this exchange. Thank you. As a result of my own research, many responses received and workshops attended, I have decided on a company and have received the test kit. I chose a relatively inexpensive standard package for mtDNA HVR-1, which can be upgraded at a later date. The more expensive the test, the more markers are measured. This test measures maternal DNA only. For those of you who are not familiar with all of this, men are able to test for both maternal and paternal DNA because they contain both X and Y DNA. We females are limited to X DNA only. To test paternal ancestry, a female needs to have a male relative (father, brother, cousin, nephew) tested. The kit includes a CD with information, a description of the project, a migration map, users guide, testing materials (sterile swab with a specimen envelope), instructions, some background information, and anticipated expectations. I can trace my female ancestors in Ventry, County Kerry to the late 1700's and am curious to gain further information. I sent in my sample last week and will be glad to report back when I receive results. Jeanne Baldwin Dick & Jeanne Baldwin Sacramento, CA
