    1. [IRL-KERRY] DNA
    2. I may be mistaken but I believe the current testing to determine whether someone is related can be done only on the paternal line, e.g. males with the same surnames. So the situation described earlier, where there are some women in the lineage, wouldn't work because you're tracking Y chromosomes, which women do not have. The alternative is mitochondrial DNA, which we all get from our mothers. So, in such a case, the lineage would be my mother to her mother to her mother, etc. Is this correct? -----Original Message----- From: irl-kerry-request@rootsweb.com To: irl-kerry@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 28 Jan 2008 7:07 pm Subject: IRL-KERRY Digest, Vol 3, Issue 24 Today's Topics: 1. As such, we are considering DNA testing. In the past we have seen DNA discussed on the list but do not recall whether or not a particular lab was ever mentioned. Any help directing us to a reliable testing lab would be greatly appreciated. Also, an answer to this question would be helpful. We believe the connection is directly through his father's father, etc. while mine goes through my father, his mother, her father, and his mother being the one with the same surname as the other lister. In order to make the connection, do I need to have one of my brothers be tested? Males get Y-DNA from their fathers and mtDNA from their mothers. Females get only mtDNA from their mothers. Minnesota has an overabundance of Scandanavian folk and everybody knows how they feel about ghosts. However, most Kerryfolk are Irish who have a great deal of mutual love of "their" ghosts. Family history is a different matter. While if Jeremiah Reidy should stop by some afternoon and fill me in on some of those unanswered questions that I have, I wouldn't object. But if all of a sudden a bunch of Sweeney ghosts were prowling around the back yard and premises, that might be a bit disconcerting. Or Amish ghosts full of "thee's" and "thou's" and "thine's." Maybe a good compromise might be the gift of "bi-location" for genealogists so that we could go back and chat with ancestors when they were still alive. After all, we know how doddering some geezers get towards the end of their days, so it'd be better if we could ask those questions when they were still in the prime of life and full of "vim (or something) and vinegar." Although I suppose they might be disconcerted by very specific questions about their families. We would have to rely on the old standby "I'm here from the government and I'm here to help you." There's a great deal of information available to those who communicate with ghosts. Unfortunately, my blood relative ghosts don't speak English. It's something like German but not. The Sweeney ghosts [unless carrying an axe] are generally harmless folk and wouldn't bother anybody. Amish ghosts generally have a sense of humor and are most easy to get along with but the "thee", "thou" and "thine" are converted into a sort of Pennsylvania Yiddish like zee, das und dem. Bi-location is OK. I really can't comment on "doddling" old geezers unless you might be referring to some of my friends in the Veteran's wing of the Palmer Odd Fellows Home? Well time for a nap.
