    3. Jack, Steve, List, I have Mara's in my tree from Milltown. The family of Jeremiah Mara and Ellen Moriarty. I'm related to their children both maternally and paternally! This family ended up in Worcester, MA. One of the grandchildren of Jeremiah and Ellen became a Worcester City Councilor. Son Michael Mara fought in the Civil War. If anybody is connected to these Mara's I have obits on some of them, marriages etc. They came over piecemeal..some as early as 1860's. Helen -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Steve Burgess Sent: Thursday, August 19, 2010 12:01 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [IRL-KERRY] IRL-KERRY Digest, Vol 5, Issue 230 Jack, I'm still a bit of an amateur at this, but maybe I can help a little here. The surname, "Mara" often comes to us as, or comes from the following: Omara, O'Mara, Meara, O'Meara. In my family tree, we have 'em and there are some Timothy and Cornelius entries I've found, especially through the Kerry Diocese records at http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/ Go to the site and enter his name and the county and you'll find 142 hits. For Timothy marriages, I see a Timothy Meara of Milltown (parents: John Meara & Johanna Shea) marrying Julia Neil (parents John Neil & Mary Mullins), also of Milltown marrying 30 Sep 1880 in Killarney Parish. Looks to me like they had the following children: Mary Neil 1878, in Killarney (before marriage?) Ellen Mara 1884 in Killorgan (unless this was a different TImothy Meara & Julia Neil) John Mara 1887 in Milltown David Mara 1890 in Milltown Catherine Mara 1891 in Milltown Timothy Meara 1893 in Milltown Honora Meara 1894 in Milltown Matbe Timothy went back? Maybe they were trying to hide the baby out of wedlock? Maybe it's a different couple. For Cornelius marriages, I see a Cornelius Mara of Knockeenduve marrying Johanna Lynch of the same town on April 10, 1880 in the parish of Killarney. That could easily be your Cornelius if they had a 3-year old in 1883. I see Bridget Mara of Droumlisk baptised 5 Jun 1888, daughter of Timothy Mara & Bridget Shea. That's in the parish of Kenmare, which would have been a tought journey to Killarney, I think. Looking at baptisms around 1880, I see a Timothy being baptized May 11, 1873 in Droumduhig (probably part of my line) whose father was Jeremiah Meara & mother Mary Foley. One of the sponsors was Cornelius Meara. An uncle? A grandfather? On 20 April 1874, Cornelius & Bridget Mara had daughter Margaret baptized in Coolbane. But that's not in the Killarney parish, although it's only about 10 miles from Killarney itself. 7 Feb 1881 shows Jeremiah Meara baptised, son of Cornelius Meara and Johanna Lynch, in Knoceenduve. 20 Jul 1882, it was John Meara - same parents, etc. 14 Mar 1884, Mary Meara - same parents, etc (only here, they're spelling the town as Knockeenduff). 21 May 1886 shows Cornelius, same parents. etc 30 July 1889 was Julia, same family 20 Dec 1891 was Patrick 17 Apr 1898 was Johanna Perhaps some of this squares with what you know about your family. As for me, I have a G-G-G-Grandfather named Cornelius Meara. Most of our Mearas came from Droumduhig / Droumdoohig / Drumduhig (take your pick of spelloings & mix 'em up). One of Cornelius' daughters, Honora, was born in 1843, but I don't show her as having a brother named Cornelius. Anyhow, happy hunting. SlaĆnte! Steve Burgess >Today's Topics: > > 1.
