    1. [IRL-KERRY] Fwd: Finding ancestors in Ireland with online resources and a little luck
    2. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Sat, Oct 30, 2010 4:08 pm Subject: Re: [IRL-KERRY] Finding ancestors in Ireland with online resources and a little luck Hi...    You all are inspiring me. Let me first say that the 1880 census in Kings Co. NY., states that my great great grandfather, Samuel Rawlins, was born in Ireland to English parents.  He left Ireland for the US in 1867 and ultimately spent many years working at sea before settling down in Brooklyn. He married a German woman and had a short and sometimes chaotic life.  Samuel died in Philadelphia in 1884 at the age of 45.    When I started to work on this line, about 10 years ago, I found that a cousin had posted a little bit of information on Family Tree Maker and claimed my ancestor was from Cork. I eventually found an elderly aunt who believed that our Samuel was from Dublin. This prompted me to spend several years working with an Irish researcher in both Dublin and Cork, learning about every Rawlins descendant but my own.    Finally, I found a baptismal record in Middlesex,( performed six years after my ancestor was born) that identified my gggrandfather and his family. I was thrilled! It didn't last long, however, when it became impossible to find the family in any of the English census records. What I came to determine is that my ancestors were itinerate workers, who did not own land and traveled from place to place, back and forth from England to Ireland.    While I have several records for my ancestor here in the States, I lack that one link to a birthplace in Ireland. Not only that, but my 3gg....also a Samuel Rawlins, is even more elusive in records. We know that Samuel Sr. was a "watch finisher". He may have given up the trade by the 1860s, however when it became obsolete. I have also been unable to find a marriage record for Samuel's wife, Mary...who may have been of Irish descent. What keeps me going is that just when I seem to hit a dead end, I find something that takes me a tiny bit further.    I am cautiously ordering GRO records and anxiously awaiting for somebody to get the 1875 Kings Co. NY state census on line. I would love any advice about how to proceed further.    Bev W    -----Original Message-----  From: Michael Danahy <[email protected]>  To: kerrykuzzin @dslextreme.com <[email protected]>  Cc: Kerry List <[email protected]>  Sent: Sat, Oct 30, 2010 1:37 pm  Subject: Re: [IRL-KERRY] Finding ancestors in Ireland with online resources and a little luck    Marge,    What a wonderful and inspiring story.    I hate to tell you, but with some word processors, if you delete a  document, you can sometimes go back and under the edit choices, often  it allows you to undelete or reverse the step you just took even  going a few strokes back. Something to keep in mind to avoid strokes.    Anyway, finding your Irish cousins is such a blessing. You have  undeleted theravages of time.    Michael DANAHY  http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/d/a/n/Michael-C-Danahy/index.html  RESEARCHING IN MA (Hopkinton), IRE, ENG  ALDRICH  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~aldrichnaa/  (one m SMITH, earlier ones m CASAVANT, COMEE,    http://www.familyorigins.com/users/e/v/a/Jeanne-C-Evans  LOVELL, PRAY, PRENTICE, RAWSON, SEALD, THAYER);  http://members.xoom.com/jaldrich/Lines/Michael.htm  Aldrich Family biographies, go to  http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssociation/AldrichBios  or go to http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aldrich/  CASAVANT (who m MORAN);  CURRAN (who m DANAHY)  DANAHY (b. in Hopkinton and who m LENAN, siblings m.  TOLAN,  JOHNSON, O'CONNOR)  LENAN (who m O"BRIEN);  SMITH (who m CASEY);  PRENTICE (who m ALDRICH)  http://www.prenticenet.com/roots/prentice/robert/#R4  RAWSON (one m ALLEN, later one TORREY)  http://www.rawsonfamilyassoc.org/  THAYER (Thomas m WHEELER, son Ferdinando m  HAYWARD);  http://thayerfamilies.com/thomas-line.htm        _______________  ---------------    Policies of the IRL-Kerry List:  http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlker/mailing.html    To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected]  with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of  the message.    To subscribe to the Digest version of the list, please send an email to  [email protected] with the word 'subscribe' without the quotes in  the subject and the body of the message.    To visit the County Kerry Research and Resources Page go to:  http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlker/    Share your stuff!
