Jeremy,   I don't live in Ireland so I can't be certain, but my understanding is that the townland boundaries established for Griffiths Primary Valuation remained in use at least during the subsequent valuations (shown in cancelled land books) into the 20th century.  The census districts - DEDs (District Electoral Divisions) were comprised of numbers of townlands.
