Jeremy, I don't live in Ireland so I can't be certain, but my understanding is that the townland boundaries established for Griffiths Primary Valuation remained in use at least during the subsequent valuations (shown in cancelled land books) into the 20th century. The census districts - DEDs (District Electoral Divisions) were comprised of numbers of townlands. The 1901 Townlands Index would identify in which DED each townland was grouped (for 1901 and 1911). This is my interpretation of what John Grenham wrote in his "Tracing your Irish Ancestors."
