    3. Mary and list, Am I correct in understanding Florence, Sylvester and Cornelius and interchangeable? Also, any thoughts on Jeffery/Geoffrey/Gottefriede? Are there names that are interchangeable with it? 3. Leslie,   No, Cornelius was the "saint's name" for the Irish CONNOR - which is now popular on its own. My grandfather was Cornelius, generally known as Con or Connie.   Not sure about Sylvester.   Geoffrey (or the more English form, Jeffrey) was a Norman-French introduction to Ireland, related to the Germanic Gotfried. It was "translated" to Irish as Seafra or Seafraid (according to Woulfe). It was popular in Kerry at least.   Some other old Irish names found (usually anglicized) among emigrants esp. from Kerry: Murtaugh=Mortimer Muiris=Maurice Domnall or Donal=Daniel Riocard=Richard (pronounced Rickard) Eogan=Eugene  Gobnait=Abigail or Deborah Nora=Honora, Honoria Eibilin=Eileen, Ellen, Helen, Nellie, &c. Sioban=Joan, Johanna, Hannah   Paul --- On Fri, 2/11/11, Leslie Rahling <[email protected]> wrote: From: Leslie Rahling <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [IRL-KERRY] names, names To: "'marysimpson'" <[email protected]>, [email protected] Date: Friday, February 11, 2011, 11:10 AM Mary and list, Am I correct in understanding Florence, Sylvester and Cornelius and interchangeable? 3. Hi, all, Here¹s what I can find... Dermot: ³Diarmaid, signifying the god of arms, is derived from ³Dia², a god, and ³Armaid², the ...plural of ³Arm². ....This name is Anglicised ³Diarmot² and has become a surname, as MacDermott². The only thing I could find that seems like Jeremiah (phonetically) is this: ³Gearrmaide, derived from ³Gearr, short, and ³maide², a stick; signifying the chief of the short cudgel. Bart with a period (Bart.) is short for Baronet, but Bart by itself is short for Bartholemew. In addition, Cornelius: "Conchobhar (Anglicized "Conor" and Latinized "Cornelius", derived from Cu or Con, and "Cobhair", signifying the helping warrior". Haven't found anything on the others you mentioned, but I see no connection between those three names. Maybe Geoffrey was one of those Norman names who settled and adapted Irish surnames. Gottfried sure sounds like it. Kitty
