My gggrandparents' eldest son (b. in NY about 1850) was Maurice Doyle. Later, after the family moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan, and when he was an adult, he sometimes was recorded (as in some censuses) as Morris. This may be indicative of the pronunciation of Maurice that was common at the time. I have no idea what the 19th century (and later) pronunciation was in Ireland. Where I live in the eastern US it's most likely to be pronounced with the accent on the second syllable, with a long-e vowel sound (at least by those not named Maurice). ________________________________ From: Trish Jensen <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Sun, March 20, 2011 6:54:47 PM Subject: [IRL-KERRY] O'Connors Hi list, Would any one know if there is another spelling for Maurice.
