    3. From: Roe Merola [mailto:srmerola@optonline.net] Sent: Sunday, August 04, 2013 12:42 PM To: 'IRL-KERRY@rootsweb.com.' Subject: Foley/folsey I have been reading the past posts and I am wondering if Foley is sometimes Folsey. My ggrandmother Mariah O'Leary came from Kenmare. I have hit a . <mailto:IRL-KERRY@rootsweb.com.> brick wall with my dad's family. He was orphaned at age 9 so he himself didn't know much. What I have found out is that Mariah O'Leary was born in Kenmare (from an obituary I found)I from the Census she was born around 1830. I think that she married Patrick Folsey in Ireland so assume he came from the area of Kenmare and I believe they immigrated to NYC around 1850. He was a tailor and they lived around Clarkson St downtown NYC. They had 4 boys & 1 girl. 2 boys died around their late 20's early 30's never married to my knowledge, 1 son James Folsey possibly married and had a child, Martin Folsey married but had no children. My great grandmother Mary Folsey married William Reddy, he died in 1909, Mary died in 1911. Their son my dad age 9 at that time was raised by Martin and his wife Mary Folsey. I found the tombstone in Calvary Cemetery and the spelling is Folsey but I do believe Martin had the spelling as Falsey. I have not been able to find anything but the above information. If there are any suggestions, I would appreciate it very much. Catherine

    3. This reply will be of more interest to Ms. Fallow than Susan (Hi, Susan!) in that I am familiar with the RC records in VT, having researched some early French there.  Many of the VT RC parishes have published their early records, due to interest from French descendants, but there are Irish emigrants included too. Burlington has RC records from about 1830, Rutland from 1835 and St. Albans and Swanton from at least 1847. Some who settled in VT close to the Quebec border would travel north for baptisms. Others did receive visits from missionaries, but not all these records have survived. Some that have are in Huntington and Chatauguey? PQ (check the LDS catalog under VT church records). So it may depend on where in VT they went to - people would travel some distance for baptisms, so they can be delayed by months in some cases.  Have you tried writing to the parish(es), or diocese in Kalamazoo? Most dioceses have an online presence and may list founding dates of parishes and describe how to access archives of early parish records.  Paul Keroack ________________________________ From: M.Q. Fallaw <cliokent@yahoo.com> To: Susan Haines <sehaines42@gmail.com>; "irl-kerry@rootsweb.com" <irl-kerry@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 3, 2013 7:39 PM Subject: [IRL-KERRY] Foule or Foley Sue, What part of Kerry do you think your Foleys (and Sheas) lived in? One of my 3rd great-grandmothers was Ellen Foley, who married Michael Doyle (both dying in Kerry by 1848). (I don't know the origins of Ellen.) Their son Jeremiah appears to have been born near Sneem in the first quarter of the 19th century (baptismal record not surviving), but they and/or Jeremiah may have moved later closer to Kenmare (to the civil parish of Templenoe, RC parish of Kenmare, where there indeed were some Foleys (per church and Griffith's records). Jeremiah Doyle emigrated in late 1847, going first to Montreal (on the coffin ship "Lord Ashburton") and then (perhaps within a year) went to Vermont for a short time, then on to Bergen (or maybe West Bergen), NY, for 15 years or so before finally settling in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, where he bought his own farm. In Montreal, in early 1848, he married Mary Shea, my 2nd great-grandmother, who was on the same ship. The family story is that they met on the ship, but I have considerable doubt about this and think it fairly likely that they knew each other in Kerry. She was a daughter of Thomas Shea and Mary White (according to the marriage record at Notre Dame in Montreal). I have no idea (yet) as to their origins, but at the time of Mary's birth (and at the birth of several other probable children of theirs and the marriage of one) they lived in various townlands in Templenoe CP/Kenmare RC parish, generally a little west or northwest of the town of Kenmare. Unfortunately, zillions of Sheas seem to have lived in the area, and I don't know how they're connected (or not). Mary White seems to have lived in the same vicinity, and there are other Whites there, though they're not nearly as numerous as the Sheas. My guess is that White may have been a branch name for certain Sullivan or even Shea kinship groups. My great-grandmother Nellie Doyle Budd was the couple's first (known) child, born in Vermont in 1849. She would seem to have been named after her father's mother, Ellen (Nellie) Foley Doyle. But I still haven't found out whether RC baptismal records survive for that year in Vermont (doubtful), or whether perhaps traveling priests from Canada served the still relatively few Catholics there so the records might be somewhere  in Canada. There were some Foleys (and Doyles) living in Kalamazoo Co., MI, but whether they might be connected to mine, I don't yet know (and may never know, I guess). If I had ready access to the parish records of the RC church in Kalamazoo (city), I might be able to figure out some relationships, but I live hundreds of miles from there and visiting any time soon is not feasible. Have you found your Bartholomew and James Shea in the online Kerry church records? If so, where were they living at one time or another? 3. thank you all for your responses about Foule/Foley. What a helpful list! Alas, I fear this isn't my family as I have never seen the name in any other context. 3. Hi All, I am new to this site. I was browsing Rootsweb and I am interested in Cussen surname. Maurice Cussen & his wife Catherine Carmody lived in County Kerry about 1840s. Their son, Maurice, married Margaret Finn in Hartley, NSW, Australia in 1850. Do you have any connecting details to Martin Cussen of Shepparton/Mooroopna in Victoria, Australia --- I think he was born in Co Limerick c1842? Best wishes, Peter Ryan, Melbourne, Australia.

Hello Jeanne, I am a native of Western Massachusetts, Holyoke'Springfield area.....Fenton is a popular name in both cities ......there is no Palmerstown but there is a Palmer which is a suburb of Springfield.. Belchertown is a little farther away.... I have Manning family from the Dingle peninsula connected to both Wallace and Houlihan families.....in addition, I noticed that you are researching the name, "Kevane".....I have family of that name connected to the Goggin family from the Ballyferriter area of the Dingle peninsula.....if any of this possibly connects with your family, let me know... 3. I knew Charles Horan and his wife who came from Co.Kerry. Both are deceased now, but for many years had a religious goods store in Los Angeles, owned by Charles - and maybe a brotther. Called Horans Religious Goods. This was in the 1950s and 60s. I know Charles daughter lives in Missoula, Montana, but can't remember her married name at the moment. I always thought the Horans were from Kilmoyley/ Ardfert, where my grandmother, Mary Nolan, came from, but am not sure. She was born in 1875. Not sure if this helps. Good luck! 1. [IRL-KERRY] Looking for FITZGERALD
    2. Mary Mizzi
    3. Hello Ray, Nice to hear from you again...haven't been searching Kerry for a while but I am going to give this a shot, hoping my grt grt grandfather might have been in Kerry. I am looking for my grt grt grandfather, Timothy FITZGERALD, b. 1784 somewhere in Ireland (according to all the census in Wales) He was shown as a widow with 2 daughters in Abervale 1841 Census, Wales(name mispelt) with Eleanor unknown age and Mary Ann aged 5 ...this matches my grt grandmothers birth and I have all the relevant history of her marriage to Thomas Hooley in Swansea in 1857 including certificates. Timothy's details show he was a Tinman by trade (no not the one from Wizard of Oz!) which makes me believe he came over to Wales to work in the factories over there when things got a bit rough in Ireland. I have his 2nd marriage certificate in 1866 aged 82 years and produced 3 more children??? He had married his housekeeper of many years, a Martha Turner who had a child Moses with her...she was half his age and had probably looked after him and his daughter Mary Ann (no mention of Eleanor since 1841 Census) and he died in 1872 in Swansea...also have his death certificate. I also found baptisms of Eleanor and Mary Ann Fitzgerald in Co Sligo Marys birth was 1836 which also matched. But the parents were John James FITZGERALD and Mary Ann QUILL...not Timothy..still no further information about her death but there is a John FITZGERALD-QUILL that I am trying to find who is mentioned in one of the lists. Tims father as shown on his certificate was Redmond Fitzgerald but still no birth shown for Timothy with Redmond as his father. I have been looking everywhere for Tim and thought if you were looking through that Casey Book again, could you kindly look for this name please. I am now wondering if the name was changed when he came to Wales?? Ahh... aint researchin' fun?? No more sightings of Herbie the giant croc living in our Herbert River...heard the Wildlife boys have been taking out a few big ones from the river expecially near populated areas and transporting them to other places. But our town of Ingham has gone on the map in recent weeks with the finding of a very huge carpet snake weighing 17.5 kilos that had fallen through the roof at our local St. Vinnies Store. He was captured by our local "snake lady" Virginia McGrath, and it is on Youtube. Just type in her name and large snake...the story even seen in Britian and France and other places I believe. It was on our Sunrise morning show here in Australia showing her with it. Yes we had a big one out in our orchard many years ago that was accidently killed when a tractor and grass slasher went over it...we named him "the keeper of the orchard" as we noticed a lot of flying foxes were not eating our fruit one year and of coarse, pythons just "love" flying fox on the menu for their dessert !! Well nice to talk to you again Ray and hope you find this missing grt grt grandad of mine. Keep well Kind regards, Mary Mizzi in NQ Australia where our sugar cane is being planted today.
