Julie, The following links include the history of the primary mills in Willimantic - the last one is an organization that may have surviving records. I'm not sure if the mills recruited in Kerry, but I did have 19th century Kerry cousins who worked at the thread mill in Willimantic. Some went there from Norwich which also had many mills with Irish workers. Nearby Colchester had a rubber mill which definately recruited in Cahirciveen, but earlier, in the 1850s. New London was not a city with a great number of mills, as it was primarily a port, but it did have some. Yes but that is only American genealogy isnt it Ray? My interests are in Ireland and Wales and England. Mary ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ray Marshall" <ray.marshall@gmail.com> To: <IRL-Kerry@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, August 09, 2013 11:50 AM Subject: [IRL-KERRY] Been kinda quiet, folks. Check out GenealogyBank.com So I thought I would share with you a tip that I came across recently. www.GenealogyBank.com Genealogy Bank somehow has digitized thousands of newspapers, obituaries, birth records, marriage and engagement records and passenger lists. I've been particuarly involved in going through the Duluth (Minnesota) News Tribune where I was born and where my Irish and Polish ancestors came in the 19th century. Not all newspapers are complete. [The Duluth News Tribune seems to be just between 1880-1925 or so but those are great years for me when my ggf's brother owned a saloon]. But what is great about Genealogy Bank is that you can do a lot of trial searches and you can see partial information on the results. So you can get an idea of the possibility of you finding valuable genealogical or historical information. Then you can sign up for $20 per month (or $50 per year) and then go to it. You can copy to your printer, or make pdf files. I did the later because I found hundreds of items, most of them very small tidbits. Like today, most of us don't get our names in the newspaper very often. I've found that there are several ways that would indicate a likelihood that you will find interesting/valuable information. 1. If your relative was a prominent public official. 2. If he owned a business and sued or got sued a lot. Newspapers always have court reporters. 3. If he drank a lot and ended up in court regularly for fighting. 4. If he was a petty criminal. 5. If he got murdered. Those aren't hypothetical instances, folks. They come from my Polish family. Can't find much on my Irish side other than a lot of visits in the "personals" section of the paper. Unfortunately, GenealogyBank hasn't digitized any newspapers from the Negaunee/Marquette region of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. You do have a problem though if your relatives were named John Smith or And, of course, like with much of genealogy research, you often come across items that maybe don't relate to your family, but they are really delightful tidbits, such as this advertisement that was attached to an article on one of my relatives. ========================================= Locate the Joints [1895 newspaper advertisement] The main purpose in carving fowl and raiding opium joints is the same, first locate the joints. The chief purpose in having your eyes properly fitted with glasses is to find the right place to have it done. Our ambition to find a faultless eye glass guard has been realized and is appreciated. With this guard you have no more trouble with your eye glasses falling off in your soup, etc. We also have a modern and perfect fitting spec frame, which when fitted with lenses properly fitted by F.D. Day & Cos. competent optician, 315 West Superior Street, will give proper satisfaction. =============================================== Now get to work people! We need more action on the Kerry List. There were several Kerry families from the Glenbehy area that lived in Nashua, New Hampshire. Partial list of surnames would include Reardon, Diggins, Shea, Sweeney. I suggest you contact John O'Connor who writes a genealogy column for the Springfield Republican. You can access them on masslive.com. Meg, List, Meg I too rely on the "Worcester Spy" but you should check the "Springfield Republican", Springfield covers way more years and I have caught a few tidbits about Worcester folks in that paper. I have gotten great stories from my elderly parents when I ask about businesses and factories in Worcester that have disappeared. My soon to be 87 year old Mom likes me to read her the grocery ads from the store my grandmother frequented. She then calculates what the prices would be today! So it's not all genealogy for me! Thank you Ray! Have to smile seeing you 'grumpy'! Lol!! I live in Northern Ireland but was born in South Africa where I lived all my life until 5 years ago. I have traced my ancestors who arrived in South Africa - but cant trace them leaving Ireland or England. I dont have a subscription to any paid genealogical site as I dont have the confidence that I will find what I am looking for.. So my stonewall is still standing firm like most of the old ruins over here..! I will however be willing to assist where I can if anyone should want me to contact any place over here..? I can easily second Ray's comments and for New Haven, CT - I have found some ancestors and not all were criminals! Yes, being arrested for drinking related issues is big. Once in a while I have found a death notice which may give relatives and address. Using that address with the city directory (ancestry) I can figure out relatives. I am impressed with the amount of gore that they wrote up concerning, say, deaths from falling off a moving train. I am cheap when it comes to genealogy but this seems to be worthwhile. All this is not to say that I am getting anywhere at all on my family! (Shea, Moran, Healy, Grady in, perhaps, Killorglin or nearby) Sue

I haven't used this site yet, but it seems interesting and apparently has lots of contributions from people in Ireland and Kerry. Although the .com domain suffix indicates that it may be based in the US. According to the "About Us" below, the concept is for people in the townlands, cities and counties to help trace all those who have left over the years. "IrelandXO currently has over 500 parishes engaged with active volunteers assisting in answering questions and queries and are continuing our rapid roll out to all areas in 2013. Check if your parish has a profile here" That applies to all the counties in Ireland. And, since I couldn't find Knocknagoshel in County Kerry, I'm assuming by "parish" that they mean the Civil Parish system that was used in the 19th century and so importantly for Griffiths and other searches. I guess that would make sense since Roman Catholic and Church of Ireland parishes would be different and more confusing to people. I did just check on the Civil Parish of Castleisland and saw a nice google map with Townlands identified on it. There are about 50 messages on it, all quite recent, from yesterday, to about 18 months ago. There is a users manual that you can download. http://www.irelandxo.com/resources I did see what I believe is a minor error in their explanation of Irish population figures. They say that the Irish census returns before 1861 were destroyed in a fire. I believe that they were "pulped" beceause somebody in the government decided that they weren't needed and the storage space was expensive. It was the Irish Wills in the Four Courts building that were burned during the Civil War in the 1920s. http://www.irelandxo.com/node/69/messages?page=1 About Ireland Reaching Out The Ireland Reaching Out (IrelandXO) programme is based on a simple idea; instead of waiting for people of Irish descent to trace their roots, we go the other way. Working through voluntary effort at a townland, village and parish level in Ireland, we identify who left those areas, and trace them and their descendants worldwide. IrelandXO offers a free service and it is a not for profit organisation. If your ancestors came from Ireland and you would like to find out more about them, we in the IrelandXO programme will endeavor to help you as part of your research. This reverse genealogy entails the tracing and recording of all the people who left Ireland and seeking out their living descendants worldwide. Those identified or recognised as persons of Irish heritage or affiliation are invited to become part of a new extended Irish society. IrelandXO offers an extraordinary opportunity for local parish communities to extend the numbers of people committed to their parish by inviting its own Diaspora worldwide to become involved in their place of origin. This programme is an opportunity to boost tourism and bring economic benefit to the area. IrelandXO currently has over 500 parishes engaged with active volunteers assisting in answering questions and queries and are continuing our rapid roll out to all areas in 2013. Check if your parish has a profile here Throughout the expansion of the programme we endeavour to respond to all enquiries even in communities where we have yet to confirm a volunteer presence. Good luck in your searching. Share this site with your other genie friends. Ray Marshall Kerry List Administrator in balmy Minneapolis

So I thought I would share with you a tip that I came across recently. www.GenealogyBank.com Genealogy Bank somehow has digitized thousands of newspapers, obituaries, birth records, marriage and engagement records and passenger lists.
