    3. Hello Brendan, Thanks for the information about the miners. I'll check the IRL-KERRY archives to see if I can find the name and author of the book you are describing, it sounds like a very interesting resource. I've long suspected possible links to the Allihies area because of the mining connection, and along with the ancestry connections (who's ancestors come from the Beara Peninsula) I'm finding through DNA, I ended up purchasing all three volumes of Riobard O'Dwyer's "Annals of Beara". The books have yielded interesting clues. With the information I'm receiving from all the replies to my posts, I'm slowly connecting the dots to possible answers. Thanks again, -Heather

    3. Hello Peter, Thanks for the advice! On the Wales 1911 census both Jeremiah and Hanora had Kenmare listed as birthplace, and early on in my search I did focus on the town of Kenmare. But after finding no good matches, I'm thinking that it could be the parish of Kenmare, with its many townlands, that they may be referring to in the 1911 Census. Also, I have regularly been checking the Irish parishes website trying different combinations of parents names and birth years to see if anything looks promising. while I have several possibilities for each it's hard to say which one it might be without a townland. Thank again, -Heather

    3. Heather, You don't say whether 1911 census of Wales says whether either or both were from Kenmare. But it looks like a strong clue. The site I'd suggest is http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ Peter

    1. [IRL-KERRY] Denis SUGRUE record in Ellis Island records help please
    2. I am hopeful some of the residents of Mass on this list may be able to assist please. I am currently looking at an Ellis Island record of the Original Ship Manifest for Denis SUGRUE; Aged 57; Last place of residence Castle Island Ireland; Date of Arrival Mar 19, 1921; Aboard the Aquitania; Left from Southampton. Is there somewhere on line that has a transcription please of the column headings for the Original Ship Manifest please? I am having difficulty reading the column headings for this page. Another area I am having difficulties with is – Denis is recorded on Line 13. A street name has been crossed out and what appears to be another street name has been handwritten in. Is anyone able to identify this handwritten street name please. Third query – the above record is dated March 19, 1921. The person Denis SUGRUE will be staying with is recorded as his sister Margaret WRITER of 342 A************, Springfield. Am I correct in thinking there was a census taken in 1921? If so, was it taken after Denis arrived back in the US? Should I be able to locate both Denis SUGRUE and his sister Margaret WRITER in the 1921 census? Thank you for any assistance. Jenny Australia

    3. It appears to me they crossed out Adabon and rewrote Audabon as the street address. And no, the census would have been 1920, and next in 1930 and 1940. Anything else a former MA resident can do to help?? Bev -- *Bev Sierpina*

    1. [IRL-KERRY] Genealogical Query - Jeremiah Sullivan and Hanora Harrington
    2. Heather Hundt
    3. For those on multiple Irish County listserves, this is a duplicate post of those posted to the BEARA, IRL-Cork and CountyCork lists. I’m casting a wide net so to speak. Hello All, Like so many of you, I am searching for my long lost ancestors. My biggest issues in my search are the surnames I’m looking for, which are "Sullivan/O’Sullivan" and “Harrington”. As many of you already know, it’s like finding a needle in a haystack. Here is my conundrum; I am looking for the birthplace (townland) of a Jeremiah Sullivan (born abt 1844) married to a Hanora Harrington (born abt 1850). I do not have a specific birth date or branch name for either person, but here’s what I do know: Jeremiah and Hanora were married in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales in 1867. Both were Roman Catholic and the witnesses to the marriage are John Harrington and Margret Welsh. Jeremiah’s father is listed as John Sullivan, while Hanora’s father is listed as Denis Harrington. On the marriage certificate Jeremiah’s age is listed as 23 years and Hanora’s age is listed as 17 years. According to Wales census data from 1881 – 1911, they are both listed as having come from county Kerry in Ireland. On the 1911 census Kenmare is also listed. I have no death date for either person, but have found documentation that Hanora was still living in Glamorgan county Wales in April 1921 and can only presume that both Hanora and Jeremiah died in Wales. Hanora and Jeremiah had several children all born in Glamorgan county Wales: - John Martin Sullivan - (Born 1 Jan 1868) came to USA from Wales in 1887. From 1900 – 1940 John was living in Jerome, AZ. He first worked in the mines, but in later years was a saloon keeper. John died on 11 Apr 1956 in Prescott, AZ - Ellen Sullivan – (Born Dec 1870) listed on both the 1871 and 1881 census, but trail runs cold after 1881. Probably married. - Ann Sullivan – (Born abt 1874) listed on both the 1881 and 1891 census, but trail runs cold after 1891. Probably married. - Bridget Sullivan - (Born Dec 1876) listed on both the 1881 and 1891 census, but trail runs cold after 1891. Probably married. - James M. Sullivan - (Born abt 1880) listed on both the 1881 and 1891 census. Sometime between 1891 and 1900 he immigrates to the USA from Wales and is found living in Jerome, AZ with his brother John, working in the copper mines. In 1920 and 1930 he is still in Jerome, AZ with his brother. After 1930 I lose track of James. - Mary Ann Sullivan - (Born Dec 1883) listed on both the 1891 and 1901 census, but trail runs cold after 1901. Probably married. - Timothy P. Sullivan – (Born June 1884) listed on both the 1891 and 1901 census. Sometime between 1901 and 1920 he immigrates to the USA from Wales and is found living in Jerome, AZ working in the copper mines. In 1930 he is still in Jerome, AZ living with both his brothers, John and James. After 1930 I lose track of Timothy. - Hanora Veronica Sullivan – (Born Apr 1887) listed on both the 1891 and 1901 census. In 1907 Hanora marries Timothy John Foley of Fibough, Keel, Kerry, Ireland. They are married in Wales and are still living in Llanwonno, Glamorgan in 1911, living next door to Hanora’s parents. In 1911 Hanora and Timothy immigrate to the US and end up in Bisbee, AZ. Timothy works in the copper mines. They have 5 children (Julia, John, Florence, Hanora and Timothy). After Timothy’s death in 1936, the family moves to Butte, MT where it is rumored that other relatives of Hanora live. After sometime in Butte, Hanora moves back to Arizona and dies on 9 Jan 1950 in Lowell, AZ. Her children remain in Butte, and while Julia and John settle in the area, Hanora and Timothy move to California, while the trail of Florence runs cold after 1930. Other bits of information that I found along the way: - I am rumored to be related to former disgraced Arizona Attorney General (1935-37 & 1944-48) John L. Sullivan (b. 20 Jul 1891, d. 13 Oct 1949). John Martin Sullivan may be his father, but I have not made a definitive connection as of yet. - Through DNA testing I have found that I am somehow related to Cornelius (Corly) Harrington and Johanna O’Shea of Bocarna, Glengarriff, Cork (early 1800s to late 1800s). According to the 1900 US Census Cornelius’ son James and his wife Nora are living next door to John Martin Sullivan in Jerome, AZ in 1900. Coincidence?? Also, on the 1891 Wales Census for the Jeremiah Sullivan household there is a Johanna Harrington, along with a James and Jeremiah Harrington boarding with the family. Johanna is listed as mother-in-law. While I would like to think that Johanna is Hanora’s mother, and James and Jeremiah probable brothers, these three also very closely match Johanna O’Shea and two of her sons (who subsequently went to the USA) and according to Riobard O’Dwyer’s research Johanna O’Shea did not have a daughter named Hanora. While all very tantalizing, I cannot make any conclusive ties to Hanora Harrington or Jeremiah Sullivan. - Also through DNA testing, I am somehow related to Seana-Mhici Murphy & Catherine Harrington (Caobach) of Clounaglaskin, Castletownbere, Cork (early 1800s to late 1800s). I’ve included this tidbit of information because of the possible Harrington connection, but this could belong to a different family line and not pertinent to Hanora Harrington or Jeremiah Sullivan. I realize this is a lot to digest (and probably horribly confusing), but I’m desperate and I would love to find the Townlands for Jeremiah Sullivan and Hanora Harrington if possible, but ANY small bit of information is much appreciated. Thank you in advance, -Heather Hundt

    3. Hi Jenny in Australia, I hope this will help you with your 3 questions... 1. Transcription of column headings for ship manifest pages - I don't know if there are any online, but did you try to increase the magnification of the page? If you can't do that, tell me and I will send you a listing of the headings to your email address. 2. Street name - The name of the street is Audubon Street. 3. No census for 1921, but there was one for 1920. I first looked for a "Margaret Writer" on the 1920 census and one did not show up on Ancestry for Springfield. Instead of trying different spellings of her surname, etc., I went to the 1930 census and found Margaret and Denis in Springfield at 4 Martin Street. The street listed next on the same page was... Audubon Street - and when I went back to the ship manifest page to look at the street address again, I could then make out the name of the street... Audubon! It makes sense, because people back then, usually did not move too far away from where they were living. Here is the information for them in the 1930 Federal Census for Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. 7 WD - ED 7-85 - Sheet 11A - Stamp 160 - Lines 42-43 - 4 Martin Street - 9 April 1930 I hope this helps Jenny. 3. Hello, I promised to report back on my Ancestry DNS results. I am grossly disappointed. My results, 97% Scandinavian. 3% "UNKNOWN." Along with this is a generalized history about Vikings, Sweden, emigration. I expected heavy Scandinavian, but 97% is bogus. And, any percentage of unknown demonstrates that they have a very small databank. There is no further breakdown of info whatsoever. Don't waste your money on Ancestry DNA, Lois Casson

    3. Valerie, At the risk of repeating what you may already know, Australian shipping records split into Assisted and Unassisted passengers. Then there are separate categories for crew, convicts and military escorts. Prior to about 1850, all records were kept centrally in Sydney. For Port Phillip, Melbourne, shipping arrivals to 1851 are on the NSW State Archives, but may be duplicated on Victorian State Archives. The difference being NSW have been imaged and are online. Victoria only have indexes. The question is, did she come with family? I can find no father Dennis prior to 1854 marriage. NSW Assisted Immigrant indexes have four possibilities 1844-1850. Victoria only has one that fits on age. Some of these records are also on Ancestry. If you have her death certificate it may show how long in colony, which would give clues to her arrival. But we know for sure she arrived here and was married here. So the ship's name doesn't add a real lot. You may prefer to concentrate your efforts on the Irish Genealogy site that I gave you. There are many possibilities, but sadly the search criteria leaves a bit to be desired. Peter

    3. Margaret SULLIVAN M James MCGrath in 1854 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. >From their marriage certificate it gives the parents of Margaret SULLIVAN as being Denis & Hannah SULLIVAN and that Margaret was aged 19 and was born in County Kerry. Margaret and James McGrath had a family in Melbourne and died in that state. I have not been able to find the arrival of Margaret to Melbourne nor that of her parents.
