    1. Re: [IRL-KERRY] HAPPY XMAS
    2. Jerry Kelly mentioned the Chi-Rho symbol, the first two letters of the Greek word for Christ. This symbol appears on at least three cross-slabs in Co. Kerry. Cross-slabs are generally considered to date from the 6th to the 8th century A.D., but the earliest of them may be from the later part of the 5th century. The finest Chi-Rho example that I know of is in the small cemetery in Kilshannig, north of Castlegregory on Tralee Bay. The stone is nearly 5 feet tall. Another example is on a small, very irregular, slab in Coumduff - located about a mile south of Lake Anascaul. Both of these sites are on the Dingle peninsula. I have photographed over a hundred cross-slabs/boulders on the peninsula, but these are the only two I know of that use the added "decoration" to create the Chi-Rho incised cross. On Church Island, in Lough Currane near Waterville, there is large cross-slab which appears to me to have the "Rho" addition to the cross.....but it does not seem to be considered as Chi-Rho in the literature. This is not the very ornate cross-slab on the island which actually uses the two Greek letters in the carving.....that one appears to be from a much later period - perhaps 11th century. 3. It probably started as shorthand. In the Greek alphabet "X" is English "ch" An old monogram for Christ is the "ChiRho" which in roman letters looks like Xp but in Greek is Chr. The “X” is actually indicating the Greek letter “Chi”, which is short for the Greek, meaning “Christ”. So “Xmas” and “Christmas” are equivalent in every way except their lettering. In fact, although writing guides such as those issued by the New York Times; the BBC; The Christian Writer’s Manual of Style; and Oxford Press discourage the use of Xmas in formal writing, at one time, it was a very popular practice, particularly with religious scribes, who are thought to have started the whole “Xmas” thing in the first place. Indeed, the practice of using the symbol “X” in place of Christ’s name has been going on amongst religious scholars for at least 1000 years. Eventually, this shorthand trick spread to non-religious writings where nearly everywhere “Christ” appeared in a word, the Greek Chi would replace that part of the word. 3. I believe that my 3 great grandmother was Bridget Brophy from County Kerry She . married John White from County Kerry around 1824. They had Thomas 1825, Mary(1840) James 1832 and maybe a Michael and John. I just do not know where in County Kerry she came from. I did not find them in  church records in Irish genealogy. She came to America around 1850 settling in Carbondale Pa. She is not on passenger lists and I believe she came through Canada as one of her sons did. Thank you for any help. Mary Coleman in snowy Wisconsin
