Musket in hand, Paisley buries the hatchet with Ahern http://www.guardian.co.uk/Northern_Ireland/Story/0,,2078120,00.html Owen Bowcott, Ireland Correspondent Saturday May 12, 2007 The Guardian <http://www.guardian.co.uk> Ian Paisley arrived armed with a musket. Bertie Ahern was fighting fit from the Republic's election campaign. Their engagement with military history on the field of the Battle of the Boyne yesterday sealed a reshaping of Ireland's political landscape. At the end of a momentous week, the newly appointed first minister of Northern Ireland ventured deep into what, for decades, he had considered hostile territory. The invitation to visit the battlefield in County Meath had been extended by the taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, when Mr Paisley first publicly shook his hand in Dublin last month. For unionists, the defeat of the Catholic King James II by the forces of the Protestant King William of Orange on July 12 1690, beside the river Boyne, was the pivotal moment in Irish history. The event is celebrated every year by Orange Order parades and a re-enactment of the battle at Scarva in Northern Ireland. Since partition in 1922, however, the genuine battlefield has been on foreign soil. At the St Andrews summit last autumn, Mr Ahern made a winning political gesture, presenting Mr Paisley and his wife Eileen with a walnut bowl carved from a tree that had grown on the site of the battle, to mark their 50th wedding anniversary. In return, Mr Paisley yesterday came bearing a carbine musket used by the Jacobite forces, and presented it, on behalf of a Ballymena constituent, to the taoiseach. It will be put on display in a museum being created inside Oldbridge House, an 18th century mansion built later on the site. In a speech which reached back to 16th century France, the leader of the Democratic Unionist party quoted from the poet Patrick Kavanagh - who came from County Monaghan, now in the Republic - and praised the Duke of Wellington for supporting Catholic emancipation in the 19th century. Mr Paisley said that a predominantly Catholic regiment, the 27th Foot, had saved the central line of the British army at Waterloo. Mr Ahern said: "Our history is complex. So was the battle on this ground. Catholics and Protestants fought on both sides. We cannot change what went before on this ground or across these islands, but history can make many turns, and today in this special place for our history it is another good day." Among other visitors from Northern Ireland yesterday was a pipe band from Kilkeel, County Down, dressed in 17th century uniforms, senior leaders of the Orange Order, and DUP ministers from the new executive at Stormont.
Ray, the problem with that is remembering to read one's notes. But yes, it either has been quite quiet in Palmer or this thunderstorm cut Massachusetts off from everyone else. Monica ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Yup. Thanks Ray. Where has everyone been? Or is it me? Monica ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Monica Normally I depend upon the delegation from Palmer, PA, to keep things lively around here. But you know, that is a quite elderly community. Perhaps I'll have to start sending him notes to remind him to keep up his end of the bargain. David, you can go to www.familysearch.org and look at the LDS catalog and see if they have the records you want. I happen to live in Falls Church, and I use the LDS library on Great Falls Rd., if you are in North Arlington. They will order any film or book you want from the LDS catalog. Burials in Ventry were (and still are) in Ventry graveyard, near the beach. There is also a small graveyard at Raheenyvooig at the Burnham end of the parish. Parts of what most people would reasonably consider to bbe Ventry were in Kildrum parish, which also has a burial ground. Some modern burials go to St Brendan's cemetary, Milltown, Dingle/An Daingean. As far as mid 19th century inscriptions go, very unlikely: (unless they were wealthy landlords or coastguards) most grave markers are just rough stones. In recent decades some have gained inscribed stones with the family name. Families often had vaults or box tombs which were in use for generations, although individual names might not be inscribed. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dick and Jeanne Baldwin" <dbaldwin@ix.netcom.com> To: <IRL-KERRY@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, May 05, 2007 3:40 AM Subject: [IRL-KERRY] Ventry Question > Can anyone tell me in what cemetery that inhabitants from Ventry in the > mid-1800's might be buried? I was recently working in Dublin and had a chance to go to the Civil Records building on Lombard Street. They gave me the correct district for the town I was checking for the death of my gr-gr-grand father and mother. I read somewhere that you can check these records via the LDS church. Can anyone verify this? Thanks, David in Arlington (VA)

Does anyone know of a site on the web where it is possible to refer to the old 6 inch to 1 mile Ordnance Survey maps that accompanied the Primary Valuation data - that show the map reference and sequence numbering for the valuations? I have access to the Irish Origins site, and the maps from Past Times, but not all of their maps have the numbers for the holdings printed on them ( very, very frustrating! ) and it's not that easy to pop in to the Valuation Office in Dublin..... Do the two Cork Libraries have them? The maps that I am interested in are mainly nos 85 and 97. Mary Simpson
Hello, I have only studied one valuations map. Do people on list know if lot numbers on map refer to original Griffiths Valuations or were subsequent lot changes also put on maps? I studied cancellation books which basically show lots transferred to people after wills etc or lots merged or split well into 1900's >From memory I seem to remember than map I viewed has lot nos changes and crossed out which seemed to imply they were used for valuations adter Griffiths. OBITUARIES Robert Warner: 1927 - 2007 Former chief of National Archives The Washington Post May 2, 2007 WASHINGTON -- Robert Warner, who led the National Archives to independence even while dealing with Reagan-era budget cuts and criticism over the release of Oval Office recordings, died of a heart attack April 24 in Ann Arbor, Mich. He was 79. When he was appointed archivist by President Jimmy Carter in 1980, the agency labored under the oversight of the General Services Administration, which regarded it as a warehouse and records repository. Through a behind-the-scenes campaign waged through historical and genealogical associations, Mr. Warner sprung the Archives free. President Ronald Reagan signed legislation making it the National Archives and Records Administration as it celebrated its 50th anniversary. In appreciation, the research center at the renovated Archives building was named for Mr. Warner in 2005.
My grandfather came from Glenbeigh or actually Coomasaharn a town land outside of the town.I went there 30 yrs ago one of three trips & went to the church to see if I could get a copy of his birth & any other records they might have but the priest was away & the wonderful housekeeper told me that the old church had burned down many yr's ago & most of the records were lost. The other two times I was there he was not around also so I knew his birthdate from my dad 1842 & when he came to the USA IN 1858.14 familys of Quirks lived at Coomasaharn before The Famine & I still have cousins there today. What I do not know about is my gramps mothers side of the family whom I believe were Moynihans from across the valley. If anyone is familer with this area please contact me.
