    3. If anyone knows the answer to Neil's question about the Tralee Jail in any years from 1750 on, would you kindly post it to the web? I am interested in such things as my Sullivans, Connors / O'Connors and Sheas came from Tralee (Curraheen), and many others may be as well. Thank you. 3. Dear Listers, Apparently, one of my Kerry ancesters was awarded a medal by Queen Victoria for saving one of her relatives/friends from a watery grave. Unfortunately, my grandaunt donated it to our church when they were having a drive to raise money. Does anyone know if there is some way I can find out about the awarding of medals by the Crown? Thanks, SAndy Stegmayer

    3. >From The Kingdom newspaper June 2007 http://www.the-kingdom.ie/news/story.asp?j=24465 Pilgrim prayers bring old island back to life IT was like turning back the clock to an age and a custom lost in time as solemn hymns filled the tranquil summertime air and prayful pilgrims knelt before the simple stone altar overlooking the majestic lakes. The annual open air Mass on Innisfallen Island, on the Lakes of Killarney, is one of the great traditions and yet one of the best kept secrets in Kerry. Last Friday evening's ceremony, led by Fr James Nduka, visiting Killarney from Nigeria, and Killarney curate Fr Nicholas Flynn, didn't attract anything near a capacity crowd but there was a constant trickle of pilgrims to ensure the traditional boatmen were kept busy when ferrying the passengers to the historic and spectacular island which is located a little more than a mile from the tourist landmark of Ross Castle. They travelled by the boatload to the ruins of the old Franciscan Church which, despite its absolute beauty and remarkable history, remains a closely guarded secret in Kerry. Innisfallen, now still and serene, became the first university in Europe for hundreds of years and such was the demand that overflow settlements had to be established in places like Aghadoe and Muckross. It was on the history-steeped island that the legendary Annals of Innisfallen were penned, between 1015 and 1320, by a group of 39 monks using their skills in both Irish and Latin. The historicical documents are now in safe keeping in Oxford Library despite frequent but ultimately unsuccessful attempts to bring them back to Killarney to put them on display. The island's wonderful history was never far from the minds of the faithful that gathered there for the annual Mass last Friday night and it was a wonderful occasion, enhanced by the beautiful choir which created an almost eerie atmosphere on the magnificent Lough Leane, which is also known as the Lake of Learning.

    1. [IRL-KERRY] Sullivan- Templenoe- Experience visiting the record office in Kenmare
    2. Hello Listers, The family I am researching 'came from Kenmare'...that's as close as I was able to determine their location. The name being Sullivan was absolutely a nightmare. Then, several months ago I found a W. W. I draft registration card for one of the family members that stated his birth location as Templenoe, Kerry, Ireland. What a find that was! All the others said 'Ireland' or 'Kerry, Ireland'. Recently, I visited Co. Kerry, Ireland. I went to the presbytery in the town of Kenmare.and met Father Crean His secretary, Elizabeth, was very accomodating in our search. We spent 2 hours searching through bith records and located 2 of 13 children that I was looking for. Wow, was I delighted! (I found out that they have no deaths records from about 1892 to the 1950's...they just didn't record them). Well, I also learned that the parents, John Sullivan and Jane Downing (who both signed with and X), lived in Poulagoppal. I said to Father Crean..."I have a map, can you show me where that is?". He said, "I don't think that it is on any map..but it is part of Templenoe area. It isn't a very nice name. It means "Horse's Anus". You can imagine how much I laughed as my traveling companion, John Sullivan (whose family I am working on), was seated beside me. He said that his son, a VP of Bank of America, would not be too happy to learn of this. Anyway, Elizabeth directed me to the Registry Office for Births etc for that region. Perhaps they could help me more. The office is at the Kenmare Hospital just down the road from Father Crean's residence. I went there and the secretary was very helpful. Through their Search Engine they were able to provide me with 6 birth certificates...6 children of John Sullivan and Jane Downing.....and all born in Poulagoppal! Each copy was 10 Euro. I did go to the Old Cemetery in Templenoe, on the banks of Kenmare Bay. The location is beautiful. The cemetery is in bad condition and all the old stones are unreadable, overgrown, moldy. The ground is very uneven, lumpy, and bumpy. My companion, in his middle 80's, remained in the car while I took some pictures of the location and searched for 'Sullivan's'. I'm sure my companion's relatives are buried there...but we'll never know for sure. I also went to the Old Cemetery in Kenmare, which is quite large. About 3/4 of it was 'kept up'. The other 1/4 needed to be week-wacked.....there's no way a lawn mower could work there. I was looking for Downing's.of which there were many. The fellow that was weed wacking at the Old Kenmare Cemetery told me that there was a woman who has transcribed the entire lot of cemetery stones. I told him that I would like to get in touch with her. He said her name was Sioban Tangney from Killowen...just outside Kenmare. Well, she had no phone listed in the book. I tried an internet search for her name...cemetery...every which way...but no luck. Have any of you listers ever heard of her, or know how to contact her??? She has a wealth of information that many could use. If anyone out there is researching the Sullivan's/ Downing's from Poulagoppal ;-)...Templenoe contact me. John Sullivan and Jane Downing had 13 children and 11 of them settled in Norwich CT. Ireland was just as beautiful as ever (my 4th trip). I did the Beara Peninsula twice! this time...going over the Healy Pass from each direction. Spectacular scemery as always. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    1. [IRL-KERRY] Ireland Centenarian Bounty
    2. I was recently told by a cousin in Donegal that Ireland has a Centenarian Bounty. It is an award made by the President of Ireland to people living in Ireland who have reached the age of 100 years. The eligibility criteria for the Centenarian Bounty extend to include centenarians who are Irish citizens born in the Island of Ireland and are resident outside the State. My cousins in Killorglin, Co Kerry, have confirmed this. This makes my mother eligible. She will be 106 on her next birthday. The amount of the bounty is 2,540 Euros or 3,420 American Dollars as of this mornings exchange rate. 3. I've gotten a few requests, so I'll just post here that I do have some ships' lists information for Tralee, but it's not in any kind of order at the moment. I was hoping to crossreference some of the transcriptions with the originals, since I don't think the transcriptions I saw were all that accurate. I'll do my best to find what I've been asked for. Offhand, I believe I got it off Ancestry.com; I'll have to look for my notes. --- irl-kerry-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > > Today's Topics: > > 1.
