    2. Actually, I think it's 'time' the Church started thinking (seriously) about married priests. Otherwise there will come a time when we won't have any. If I was a man I wouldn't be a priest because I couldn't get married. What a lonely life! And I can't blame them either. (And a married priest would understand the problems of a family better, too, because he'd have a family himself). What do you think? Pat In a message dated 7/10/2007 12:24:58 P.M. 3. Dear Paul and Ray and anyone else who is curious: What, pray tell, are "oenophiles"? There are many swamps in Minnesota, due to an overabundance of lakes, but "bogs" no. However, it is much more magical to speak of swamps as bogs. Also, grape vines will not grow at all in excessively damp earth, thus no possibility of grapes and by default, no wine either. Good night all, love, Jack Sweeney, Palmer, Pennsylvania which has no earth or climate needed by grape vines, thus no grapes and no wine. However, gin is something else.

    3. A very kind woman noticed that I was researching my KELLY family from Utah, and sent me a link to Utah newspapers online. It is free to search digital copies of articles, see the available papers at : http://www.lib.utah.edu/digital/unews/ My great-great uncle, JOHN P. KELLY, emigrated from Co. Kerry, Ireland, abt. 1879. He was naturalized in Utah, and worked in the silver and lead mines in Park City for nearly 40 years. He married Elizabeth HEALY, who was from Burlington, VT. Starting in 1879, they had 7 children, John C. KELLY, May, Florence, Irene Lulu, James, William, and Stewart (William and Stewart may be the same person, I found a Park City marriage for William Stewart KELLY). I found Park City newspaper articles in The Park Record for John P., his wife, and many of their children. It was so exciting to see these articles and get a feel for the personalities of my ancestors, as well as getting some facts for them. I hope those of you with Utah ancestors can find use of these newspaper articles. (As far as a New England connection goes, John P. Kelly's brother, Patrick, also worked in the Utah mines for a time, but later settled in Hadley, Massachusetts in 1886.) Hope this helps someone! ~Patsy~

    3. Do you suppose, Paul, that growing chianti grapes in bogs might give the wine a smoky flavor that might be deemed quite desirable by oenophiles? Just wondering. The famine historians say that praties and milk was a quite adequate diet (if boring) for our ancestors. I don't know about praties and bogwater. 3. The Civil Parishes roughly have the borders that the church parishes did when the Church of Ireland was established in the 1530s or so. They were the primary government subdivisions in the 19th century, along with Baronies and Townlands I believe that they also served as the parishes for the Church of Ireland but inasmuch as most CofI adherents moved away, surely there must have been some consolidation. The Roman Catholic Parishes have changed many times over the years as the Catholic population increased, and then fell after the Great Famine of the late 1840s. You can find small maps of the Kerry Civil Parishes and Roman Catholic Parishes on the Kerry Web Page (where else?). http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlker/civparlist.html http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlker/towna.html http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlker/kerrypar.html http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlker/parishx2.html The only townland location maps that I have ever seen, other than the occasional effort by a volunteer, are those found on the microfiche copies of Griffiths Valuation. The definitive source for determining where your records are located and what years are available probably would be "Irish Records, Sources for Family & Local History" by James G. Ryan. The book is now in its second edition (1997) which is greatly revised from the first (1988) and has about 100 more pages. It is expensive, so try to find it at a library or inter-library loan. 2. Janet Crawford
    3. Please come sign the petition To: Mr John Gormley, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Ireland http://www.petitiononline.com/taram3/petition.html Petition to Minister Gormley, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, to Declare the Entire Hill of Tara Archaeological Complex a National Monument and Re-route the M3 Motorway. Published, 8 July 2007 by TaraWatch.org The Hill of Tara archaeological complex, Ireland's premier national monument and most sacred landscape, is under dire threat from imminent bisection by construction of the M3 motorway. As Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, you have a constitutional imperative to give the highest level of statutory protection possible to the national monument. That includes all its individual components, many of which lie in the pathway of the M3, and are national monuments in their own right. You were aware that the Director of the National Museum had stated that the massive enclosure at Baronstown should have been declared a national monument. Yet, it was demolished on your watch, after you ignored calls to place a Temporary Preservation Order on the site. You have stated that you cannot alter the route of the M3, unless there is a "material change in circumstances", from those considered by Minister Dick Roche, who ordered the demolition of the newly discovered national monument; the Lismullin henge. There have in fact been many material changes, beyond the scope of the Lismullin file, including: 1. The inclusion of the Hill of Tara on the World Monuments Fund's List of 100 Most Endangered Sites is a material change in circumstances that was no considered by Minister Roche. 2. The fact that the EU has stated that the National Development Plan, as well as its M3 project, may be in breach of EU law constitutes a material change in circumstances. A report will issue in September 2007 from the Petitions Committee, and you should use the precautionary principle here, and halt the works in question, to prevent more irreversible damage to the delicate ancient remains. 3. The fact that an underground or 'souterrain' complex in Lismullin has been discovered is a material change in circumstances. It has been described as a "very significant" site by leading expert Professor George Eogan and should be declared a national monument. 4. The fact that you have been put on notice that the legal definition of a national monument is not being applied to these sites, or all monuments in Ireland, is a material change in circumstances. You have been advised by Conor Newman of a systemic flaw in the methodology for classification of national monuments currently being employed by the Chief State Archaeologist. 5. The Stern Report on the Economic Effects of Climate Change is a material change in circumstances that was not considered by Minister Roche, as it should have been. The M3 motorway was planned and approved in 2003, using radically outdated analysis. Due to the above material changes in circumstances you now have the legal power under the National Monuments Act to protect the Tara complex and to re-route the M3 motorway. We demand that you immediately halt all works within the Tara complex and declare the entire complex, as well as all the monuments within it, to be national monuments. Stop the Tara scandal now
