    1. [IRL-KERRY] Valencia/Valentia
    2. Amanda Clifford
    3. Hi, I'm wondering if anyone out there has any information concerning the history of Valencia/Valentia Island? When I was in Ireland this past January, many of the locals told me that pre-famine, the population was in the thousands (4,000 seems to stand out for some reason) but that after the famine, the population dropped to about 400 - and was, in 1991, about 680. I have tried googling a history of the island, but really to no avail in terms of specific famine history - mostly I find information on the laying of the first trans-Atlantic cable (which is, in and of itself, very interesting, but not what I am looking for) :-). In any event, I'm wondering if anyone can verify the above claim about the population decrease, as well as any other information pertinent to the history of the island (particularly pre-famine to famine and slightly afterwards). Thanks. -A

    1. [IRL-KERRY] Tithe Appointments VS. Griffiths
    2. Amanda Clifford
    3. Hello, When trying research ancestors whose birth year may not fit into how far the parish records go back, I just received information today from another researcher that he was told Griffiths Valuation isn't always the best to rely upon due to the fact that it was taken after the famine - that is to say, that by 1852, many folks had scattered across Kerry and so therefore Griffiths might not paint the most accurate of pictures. The person went on to say that sometimes the Tithe Appointment books give a better indication of where families were since they were taken pre-famine. Trouble is I find tons of my surname all over the place in Griffiths (because records are available for more parishes) and hardly any references in the available Tithes (because hardly any are available for Kerry). I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this theory? Thanks! -A

    3. Hi Ray, I'm glad to hear you are safe but sorry to hear about your friend's cousin. There was a story about some of the people who died and I remember reading about her. She sounded like a very special person and well loved. It is such a terrible loss. Thanks for letting us know. 3. Thanks for your concern, Liz Normally I do use that bridge three or more times a week, but because of the road construction and lane closures this Summer, I have been taking alternate routes where possible. We are very fortunate that the death toll will probably be less than 15. This was due to the slow speeds they were driving becuase it was a real traffic tie up and the fact that the bridge fell straight down, most cars landed on their tires and occupants of the cars probably were wearing seat belts. But over 100 were treated at various hospitals with a dozen or so still in serious condition. Thanks again. 3. Interesting. My grandfather, Daniel Webster McCARTHY (3/17/1847 Kenmare -- now wouldn't you think his name would have been 'Patrick', like his father's?) came to the U.S. with his parents in 1854 where he became a tinsmith. He was always enumerated in Terre Haute, IN, but he did move his family at times around about a 100 miles radius of Terre Haute. He also worked off and on for a tin shop in Terre Haute (perhaps the traveling was in conjunction with this employer). I don't know what type of 'smithing' he did, I imagine all kinds. My Dad said Dan could cut out a tin cup that was just one piece before doing the bending, etc to make the cup shape .. must have been something to see. What I wouldn't give to have one of his cups or such (have no idea what his 'mark' looked like). Mac McCARTHY -----Original Message----- From: dolard54@optonline.net [mailto:dolard54@optonline.net] Sent: Monday, July 30, 2007 11:48 AM To: IRL-KERRY@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL-KERRY] occupations I found the various comments on education very interesting.Occupation may be another worthy of comments. My gr grandfather Brian Flynn was a tinsmith from 1860 in Whitechapel until his death in Brooklyn,NY 1896.In my many inquires to Ireland I was always told a tinsmith was the same as a tinker, a traveler a gypsy they never settled in one place. Yet Brian immigrated in 1865 and in 1870 bought two pieces of property in Brooklyn ,one with a house and lived there until his death 26 years later. I eventually learned he worked on tin ceilings and tin roofs so he was tinsmith. Dolores Flynn and O'Brien
