Thanks Jack, I've seen them on there but I'm sure I heard about the law somewhere....you know it doesn't make sense not to have some sort of warning for the native drivers to beware of novice drivers perhpas a red A for alien! 3. Can anybody advise the best way of getting access to the 1901 and 1911 census for parts of Cork, Kerry, and Wexford? Do you have to go to local resources or the National Archives in Dublin or are they possible to obtain via the Family History centres ( in England )? And if the latter is possible - I have heard that they have copies on microfilm - just how good or readable are they? Has anyone done this? I have done a fair bit of research in Dublin and Cork, but would appreciate finding access to sources in the UK as it's easier on the feet! Mary p.s. driving on the correct side of the road - no bother at all....

    3. Hi, below off topic but may help anyone driving in ireland, If u hire a car anywhere in the world the driver always sits next to white line as hire cars are usually car type(steering wheel on left or right) intended for country where they are hired. So if u are driving along and come to a T-junction, u should still be in middle hugging white line afterwards. Same with roundabouts, the driver should always be next to middle of roundabout (not passenger) So if u hired a car in Ireland UK and Japan you drive on left side of road with steering wheel in right front seat of hire car using gear stick with your left hand. Driver always in middle of road hugging white line. Turn left on roundabouts so driver always on inside. If u hired a car in the US or Europe you would drive on the right side of the road with steering wheel in left seat in front using gear stick with your right hand. Driver always in middle of road hugging white line. Turn right on roundabouts so driver always on inside. This shouldnt apply to anyone hiring a car but only time above wouldnt apply is if you were driving a car not designed for county it is being driven. Eg if u sailed with your car from Ireland or UK to europe or visa versa. Alot of people from Eurpoe working in Ireland bring their cars with them so they drive next to ditch and have an awful time trying to pass out. Same would apply if u shipped your car from US to Ireland but dont think thats very common. 3. From the booklet Guide Killarney for August 2007 there are tours, accomodation, eating places(including approx.meal prices), outdoor activities& maps. The website is www.guidekillarney.com, and it seems it contains what is in the booklet I picked up in Killarney a few weeks ago. Traffic is chaotic in August as that is the peak holiday season and main school holiday time in all UK & Ireland. Bus tour doesn't give time to see what you'd like as you're on their schedule. 3. Dear Donna , We have all followed your plans as if we were going with you . Don't worry about driving but one word of advice from me is pay the extra insurance with the car. My Travel Agent told me not too ,so I declined it. Then as the lass handed me the keys she said."If there is the slightest scratch on that car you will have to pay 900 euros." This was more worrying than driving in Ireland. I came in too close to the kerb once and the hub cap got scratched so I went and got a new one. This worry ruined my trip. Just pay the extra insurance. Next time I go I'm going to see where I can find one of those L's for my back window!! Have a wonderful trip. Everyone has given you some great advise. And hey if you happen to see a Timothy Dowling in the Kilcummin books would you let me know.........thanks!!! Carol in Orlando

    3. I would like to add that while it is certainly difficult to get used to driving on the "wrong side of the road," nothing snaps you back into the "right side" than seeing a truck barreling down the road towards you - Not trying to scar you, just how it is - It took my friend and my boyfriend all about 5 minutes to get used to it - You'll be fine. Get the insurance for the narrow town roads - we wiped out a few mirrors on our way through town - oops...oh well. Definitely peace of mind insurance - and you don't want to have to pay all that hefty Euro expense God forbid something even small happens. When in doubt, we found that as long as we allowed the fast Irish drivers to pass us, they were very nice and thankful for same and understand an American tourist when they see one (not so hard to hide!!!) :) -A -----Original Message----- From: John L. 3. Dear Donna, Driving in Ireland is quite different from the States. If you are not use to driving a standard shift, I suggest you get an automatic even though it costs extra. They drive on the left side of the road and you need all your wits to get it straight especially at the round abouts(traffic circles). Remember this mantra ,"Look to the right, drive to the left, look to the right, drive to the left." On my last trip, I drove 2,081 miles Also, if you get to the ring of Kerry, take a tour bus. If it's a rainy, foggy day, forgret it. I wish I was going with you. Peace, and God go with you, Florence O'Brien Kissane ----- Original Message ----- From: <irl-kerry-request@rootsweb.com> To: <irl-kerry@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 16, 2007 3:04 AM Subject: IRL-KERRY Digest, Vol 2, Issue 254 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. I wish it were as easy to find when James Conway (b. 1838) and Margaret Hastings (b. 1841) each came to the US before their marriage in Xenia, Ohio in 1859. Margaret was born and baptized in Kilkee, County Clare. James also came from Ireland but where is still unknown. Again many many thanks. I will stick to genealogy from now on, perhaps.
