    3. \ http://www.radiokerry.ie/news/index.php Monday 05th of November 2007 05:29 pm Gardai investigate Kerry Heritage Centre A Heritage Centre in Kerry is the focus of a Garda investigation following the misappropriation of thousands of euro on admission prices. Over 40,000 euro had been unaccounted for between two Office of Public Works run heritage centres in Kerry and Galway. The OPW has confirmed that gardai are still investigating the two incidents of the missing cash, but no files have been sent to the DPP as yet. The OPW manages 747 heritage and 19 historic sites around the country. A friend from Tralee isn't sure what Heritage Centre they are referring to, can only think it is admission to Muckross House, or something like that.

    1. [IRL-KERRY] Ages on Marriage Certificates?
    2. Maureen Gamble
    3. Hello all and thank you in advance. I've sent for marriage certificates for both Galway and Kerry, hoping to verify some names and ages. Often I get back that the bridal pair were "full age," and no numbers were given. Any background on this? Is there a minimum, or a legal age, or maybe they didn't want to give their real ages? Is this a common designation for couples 'of a certain age?' Also, if the bride is listed as 'spinster,' does this always mean a first marriage for her? What about widows? I've two marriage certs that list similar names and one couple I am sure consisted of a widow and widower, even though it says 'bachelor' and 'spinster." 2. Donna Russell
    3. Hi All, I am back from killarney and had a great visit! I had 2 1/2 days--a whirlwind--but managed to go to two parishes and look through their records: Kilcummin and Killarney. Unfortunately, no matches. I also drove to the Tralee Library and looked (briefly) through the Casey Collection, again with no luck. I had a friend travel with me and we had time to visit Muckross House, Ross Castle, Sneem, Kendare, a small portion of the Ring of Kerry, and Tralee. We also explored all of Killarney. I got a parking ticket in Tralee and was charged an additional 64 Euros because my suitcase was 5 kilos over the limit (entirely due to the souvenirs I was bringing home with me), but other than that, found Ireland and its people to be friendly, generous and helpful. I had a blast driving on the opposite side of the car and road! I can't wait to go back for a longer visit. Thank you for all of your help! Best, Donna

I was not aware and had my fee check returned to me.With or without a State file number, the fees are $15. They used to be $10 with a State file number. It is $2 for additional copies of birth and marriage certificates and $4 for additional copies of death certificates. I sent them $40 for 2 records I did not have a State file number and one that I did have the number. They could have billed me for the $5, but instead chose to return the check. Anyway, this is just FYI. Bill

    1. Re: [IRL-KERRY] Emailing: naturalization
    2. Yes, indeed. The history behind this process is most interesting. Much of this is just so hard for me to imagine, being a woman, and it really was not all that long ago in the grand scheme of things. I had not been aware of the loss of citizenship due to foreign marriage, even if they remained in this country. Wow. But I must admit I was surprised when the guy at the Nat. Archives told me that women could apply for their own naturalization. "But very few did." That was another wow for me................. 3. That is all true. I was simply giving the source for my statement about woman losing their citizenship of they married men who were aliens. And it is a good starting point on learning about Naturalizations. Cheryl ----- Original Message ----- From: MonicaBOS@aol.com To: cdynan@rcn.com ; irl-kerry@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, November 02, 2007 5:13 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-KERRY] Emailing: naturalization Hi Cheryl. Yes, that is a good link but it only discusses how women and minors can automatically become naturalized without going through the process. I was told by a very nice man at the Nat. Archives in Waltham, Massachusetts that women could apply for their own naturalizations and go through the process themselves but that very few did that. That is why I looked for Hanora McSheehy. Alas, she is not there and I can only assume she did not bother to apply on her own. But here is a link, also from the Archives that goes into further detail. What is most interesting to me in this discussion is how this access to naturalization differed from state to state, and how early some states "emancipated" women. This has all sent me off on a completely different tangent. www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/1998/summer/women-and-naturalization-1.html Monica ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ See what's new at AOL.com and Make AOL Your Homepage.

    1. Re: [IRL-KERRY] declarations of intent
    2. Hi Ray. The rootsweb link was also very interesting but when I read that a soldier's application gives information of unit served, etc., I just had to pull out my copy of William Sheehy's petition. None of that information is there. It took me years to finally find where William served in the Civil War, mainly because of the spelling of his name. I had his petition for naturalization all that time. Would that it HAD contained his military information. This is indeed a soldier's petition because it says Soldier's at the top of the page. That was the first hint that I had that William had probably been in the Civil War. I finally found where he served (NY 5 Cavalry, Co. D) when I found the information on him on a local GAR list. When I got his military file, I listed 9 different spellings of the name Sheehy in that file. It is not a wonder that I had not been able to find him. Add to that, he signed up in Springfield, Massachusetts. So I guess maybe the military information on petitions differed from state to state, too.
