    3. Hi KerryKate, My great-grandmother Bridget Day was one of 6 children: I don't have birthdates for the others, but her brothers were Thomas (Tom, who was killed on a rainy night while driving Lord Ventry's coach, when the coach had an accident), Patrick (born in 1859, 9 months after his parents' wedding; this information from the parish priest in Dingle to my great-aunt who was there. I don't have those dates, however), and her sisters were Mary, Katherine and Nora (Ellen) (born in 1866 according to the same priest). Her brother Tom was the grandfather of 2 second cousins still in Ireland, Patrick Daye and Anne Daye who is a nun at Castleisland (Sister Anne, I think). I don't know of other relatives, though it seems unlikely that they are the only ones. Bridget's father was Thomas Daye (Patrick told me it is actually Daye in Ireland, not Day as we have believed all these years), and his mother was born Joanna Cleary. later Day(e). That is all I have. Almost all of it comes from Bridget's daughter Ellen (my great-aunt) who was interested in the family and traveled to Dingle back in the 1970s and found out the above information from the parish priest. Her daughter passed it on to me. There's another bit of information I just remembered that the priest also told them. On the baptism record for the parish it said that her name was Bridget Costello Day(e), of which name none of us ever heard before. We have no idea why the name. It strikes me as odd. I'm looking forward to finding out more when we are there. I know nothing about any civil record. Where would I find that? Where would I find anything else besides with the St Mary's church in Dingle? And why did you ask those particular questions? I'm assuming that the answers must mean something to you that they don't readily come to mind to me. Kerry <<It would help if you gave the names of Bridget Day's parents. (if you know them) you give an exact birth date, (for Bridget in your last e.mail) posting (where did you get that information from)? Have you her original CIVIL birth record? KerryKate>>

    3. I'm getting such fabulous suggestions. My dd went to Barnes & Noble this afternoon and bought a good map of Ireland for us to start marking with the ideas we've received. I don't know if I mentioned that my ggrandmother came not just from the Dingle Peninsula, but she was from Dingle town. So I want to contact the priest or bishop or whoever I need to contact so that when we arrive we'll be able to get as much information as possible. Can anyone give me contact information for the Catholic priest in Dingle town? Would there be the possibility of more than one church there? My ggrandmother Bridget Day was born in Dingle on 20 September 1873, attended the day school at the convent of St Mary's church in Dingle, and she left Ireland to enter Castle Island (I believe this is right because of the time) in New York in 1888 and moved to Holyoke, Massachusetts. I'm not sure how much of that is needed to know how to contact a priest, but someone suggested that I put information with the request to find the right church. Thanks in advance. We've received so much fabulous information that we are really getting excited about making a trip in September, God willing. There are hurdles to pass between here and there, but the prospect is so wonderful. I went from a longing to go (before sending my request in), to feeling like this might really happen. Blessings, Kerry

    2. Kerry, Fall is wonderful in Ireland - far fewer tourists, so the roads are easier to navigate. I'd say September or October would be perfect. As to the self-catering cottage, it is a good idea. Since the Euro has taken off and the dollar has declined, even pub meals can be pricey, but you can shop in grocery stores and local supermarkets and farm markets and make wonderful meals for yourself. Last year that's what we did. We found a local cheesemaker and between soup and brown bread and the occasional roast chicken, we ate in our little cottage like Kings! My only advice is to enjoy it and live like a local. Noreen in NY **************Start the year off right. 3. Beth Great advise. We flew out of Baltimore to Shannon. And the longest wait we had in the whole trip was getting through customs in Ireland. There are "emergency" methods to get a passport quicker -- when health is a problem. Clifford -----Original Message----- From: irl-kerry-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-kerry-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Beth Walsh Sent: Saturday, January 12, 2008 1:16 AM To: Kerry; IRL-KERRY-L@rootsweb. Subject: Re: [IRL-KERRY] Trip to Kerry Hi Kerry, Great to hear that you are going to make the trip 'back home' ! You will love it, guaranteed. To answer at least a few of your questions: first and foremost - apply for your passports. Due to the backlog of requests, it is taking longer than normal for them to process, especially first-time applicants. Next, check with your health insurance to see what kind of health coverage (if any) that you will have when traveling in a foreign country; if not, they may be able to sell you a special policy of some sort to cover you while in Ireland or advise you on what to do. Check with your doctor for any special restrictions, etc regarding the flight and trip and get his or her signature on any medical forms that may be necessary if you need to carry any type of medical supplies aboard the plane (oxygen, syringe, inhalator, that type of thing) and get duplicate copies of all prescriptions in case you will need them. Also remember that you are only allowed to carry aboard one 1 qt sized clear bag that will hold any liquids (shampoos, lotions, liquid medicine, etc) in 3 oz maximum sizes. The rest need to put in your checked luggage - and I would suggest putting those on plastic bags also. I strongly suggest that you look at the Tourism Ireland site and see if there are any travel agents in your area that are Shamrock Club members. These are agents that have taken a specially designed course given by the Irish Tourist Board (or Tourism Ireland as it now known) to learn all the important aspects of travel to and from Ireland and touring within; and have traveled to Ireland themselves. The personalized help that a travel agent can give you is worth the small fee to pay for their services. Since you mentioned existing health problems, please take out travel insurance. A very inexpensive policy is available through your travel agent that would cover you in case you needed to cancel or cut the trip short. At the very least, the rental car company I would strongly recommend is Dan Dooley car rental (ph# 800-331-9301). They also have a package tour company called Dooley Ireland Vacations. Shannon Airport is much easier to fly in and out of and driving to and from is also much easier. However, if you decide to go to Dublin at all, I would either start or finish there and most definitely do without a car during that time. Driving in Dublin is nightmarish, take my word for it- and parking is a whole other set of problems. You can fly into one airport and out of the other; you don't have to go in and out of the same airport. If you decide to stay in Kerry the whole time, you may want to rent a self-catering cottage and use it as a base, then can head out to sightsee during the day and not worry about where to stay each night. There's plenty to see in Kerry alone, that's for sure! There's also a car ferry that goes across the Shannon River from Tarbert in Kerry to Co Clare and you can drive up along the coast to the Cliffs of Moher. That saves a few hours of driving time. Goodness, I could go on and on! Hopefully that will give you a few starting points anyway. 3. Hi y'all, Thank you so much for your detailed information. I am really hoping this trip "back home" will happen. One never knows in life what is before us. I am 61 (or rather will be next week) and my dd is 31, and I don't have particular health restrictions at this point except that I tire easily. I am newly diagnosed with cancer, so no oxygen or anything like that. We'd definitely be interested in flying in and out of Shannon (thanks for that information) since we are not interested in Dublin at all. We are definitely more inclined toward the rural. And I love photography, so that will be one of my main "focuses" (no pun intended) while we are there. : ) Beth, you mentioned a "self-catering cottage" sounds fascinating. Does that mean that you have your own cottage and provide your own meals? Is that easy to do? We don't want to do a lot of cooking. Is it customary to eat at pubs or restaurants or what? Trish, you said to leisurely enjoy "all you have in mind," but that is just it, we don't have anything but Kerry in mind. Flying into and out of Shannon sounds just right, and I like the suggestion of going to Berea Peninsula that Noreen mentioned. Also Noreen mentioned something about summertime. That is another question we have. What is the best time of year to go? It would be easier for us to go late spring or fall, as far as my daughter getting off work is concerned. Is summer better for traveling there? What is the weather likely to be when? And thank you, David, I'd be happy to have any information off-list that you would care to share. Also, we have a cousin in Castleisland. Her brother is somewhere else, but I can't remember where, at this point. I have it written down in my address book. I guess it is time to start getting maps and information sent to us. This has just come up, so we haven't gotten far yet at all. We got passport applications yesterday, so we'll start moving forward on that right away. I guess that might be an issue for when we can travel. This may not happen, but we are going to move ahead hoping it will. : ) All suggestions are welcome. I love this group, and my favorite postings (besides someone saying they have found family connections) have always been hearing about plans for trips and then the trips themselves. I guess hearing about the trips has always kept my dream alive that someday . . . . And a cousin of ours found church records in Dingle for all of us when she was in Kerry years ago. I'd like to go there, maybe even contact someone ahead of time, but she has died, so I can't get information from her. Is that going to be difficult to track down? Are there many churches there? Blessings, Kerry

This townland being so close to Kilcummin parish where the only Timothy Sullivan and Coffee (Hannah) marriage Feb. 1832 can be found on familysearch.org, I searched my Kilcummin resources for Coffee. I did not find Coffee in Griffiths but did find John & James Coffey in the Tithe Applot 1824 in Ardagh and John Coffey in Gortnatona. I thought this was a great find except for the fact that there were Timothy Sullivans in Kilcummin, so this might not be the marriage you are looking for. 2. Jeremiah King's "County Kerry Past and Present" gives: "Lauhir, lathair, site, baile in Glanbehy". and "Glanbehy, gleanne beite, birch glen, paarish in Iveragh is composed of 40 bailes . . ." Glanbehy is present-day Glenbeigh, on the south coast of Dingle Bay some 30km west of Killaarney. From the OS map, the ground between there and the lakes of Killarney is reasonably flat, so one might be able to see the tip of Lough Leane from some high point in the parish. Chris My g-grandmother gave Beall Luikae or Luikai, or Luicas (the ink is smudged) as her birthplace in Ireland. Does anyone have a clue as to where this might be? Her brother had listed Killarney as his birthplace (on his death certificate). This is the closest I found, a townland called Lauhir, in the PLU of Killarney. You said the writing was smudged. I used the www.seanruad.com website and just used the first section for townlands in the County of Kerry, province of Munster. It listed all of them. Then I tried the PLU box for Killarney and found Lauhir. Thanks for finding this Maureen. Looking at the handwriting, it is possible that it could be Lauhir, though it looks like it is spelled without the 'a'. I wish I could paste it into this email but I scanned it into a word document and cannot figure out how to copy and paste it. I wondered why they didn't list the county. What is a PLU? Is there a map that shows where this townland is or was--does it still exist? How does Lauhir connect with Beall? I am so confused by all of these names! I can't believe I went all the way to Killarney and didn't go there. Can you believe it? I get the information 2 months after I go to Ireland! Donna

    2. My Great Grandmother, Mary Ann Manning, b @ 1844 County Kerry, related to her children, "...we could see the Lakes of Killarney from our home". Her brother Cornelius Manning, b County Kerry @ 1834, immigrated to SF, CA, USA, @ 1860 and became Jesuiot Brother @ 1867 and d @ 1912, Los Gatos, CA, USA. Looking for names of Townships 1834-1844 that would have view of the Lakes of Killarney and names of Catholic Churches for those Townships, in order to assist in locating baptism records. ________________________________________________________________________ More new features than ever. 3. Hi. I've used this site to double check spellings of all kinds of names. My family gave their birth places as either the townland, the PLU, the county, the civil parish, etc. This is the fastest way to check. Also, try the Co. Kerry site < http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlker/ civparlist.html> and check the townland locations out against any other location you have and see if it's close by. If brother and sister are using two different addresses for the same birthplace, this may be a proximity double check for you. Maureen in Lakewood, CO

    1. [IRL-KERRY] Sullivan in WI
    2. Donna, Take a look at http://www.seanruad.com/ put Killarney in as the PLU and look at those "Bally" townlands. Did you find Eugene's death cert or obit to see if a townland was provided? Want to email more details -- dates, etc. Kate kate_miller@ilnd.uscourts.gov or kateherron@yahoo.com ********************************************************* my g-g-grandparents names were Timothy Sullivan and Anne Coffey. My g-grandmother gave Beall Luikae or Luikai, or Luicas (the ink is smudged) as her birthplace in Ireland. Her brother had listed Killarney as his birthplace (on his death certificate). I also believe that another brother was already in Marinette, Wisconsin (which is why they probably moved there). He and his wife were listed as my g-grandfather's godparents on his baptismal (conversion) record. They were Eugene and Mary Sullivan.

    1. [IRL-KERRY] Frank J. & Susie Barr Sheehy-Listowel
    2. James Duffy
    3. Does anyone know how we might make contact with descendents of Frank J. and Susie (Barr)Sheehy? Their sons were Jack and Leo. Frank was headmaster at Listowel National School. Susie was a grand niece of Sally Barr Duffy, my great grandmother. My father visited with James, Susie, and Frank Barr in Buncrana, County Donegal. He also corresponded with James and Frank over many years but we have lost touch with all of the Barr family. We would like to share our information of the Barr family history and hopefully learn more. If you can be of any help it is appreciated. Jim Duffy

    3. Hi Donna. If someone hasn't already helped you, you can look up variations of your g-grandmother's birthplace using Sean Ruad's great townland database at: Sean Ruad's IreAtlas http://www.seanruad.com/ Using this database in Co. Kerry I did a search for Beall and for variations of it, starting with Beal, and it came up with these: Beal East Beal Middle Beal West Bealagrellagh Bealdarrig Bealkelly Also in Waterford, there was this: Beallough-Waterford You can play around with the townland and county names, and the Search Method areas in the fields to get other possible results. Do you know about the FamilySearch.org website and their International Genealogical Index? http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true You can input searches in various ways; first read the Tips near the top of the page. Searching by the batch name, after you find one ancestor that fits, can give you some other possible siblings for the parents you may have found. Keep in mind that these records come from various submitted records from families or organizations. Can you give the Kerry List all names AND dates of the ancestors that you have knowledge of in this line? So I have a few more clues: another sibling, the mother's full name, and a mysterious location in Ireland! I would be immensely grateful for any help! Thanks, Donna
