    1. [IRL-KERRY] O'Connell from Tarmons, Waterville and Cork city
    2. Gerald O'Connell
    3. I am looking for the descendants of Daniel of Tarmons. His father Maurice left his estate and moved to Cork City in late 1700's. Daniel may have gone to Cork also. My belief is that Daniel's children or grandchildren returned to Kerry around Cahirciveen. If anyone has any more information than published in the O'Connell Family Tracts, I would greatly appreciate the information. Sincerely, Gerald O'Connell Washington, DC

    2. Hi all. I have actually used this site to find some of my mother's Mayo people. Some records are 10 euros and some are 6 and some are 3. It seems to depend upon what you are looking for. The marriage records cost 10, for instance. I bought one record that helped me through a "brick wall" but there are many more there that I could have used but will not because of the cost. I guess the good news is that the marriage record tells me where to go looking for records if/when I ever get over there. As we all know, going to the right place is most of the battle. I also have to add that my "find" has added great excitement to my search. But it is very expensive, at least for me, with the US dollar so weak. Monica In a message dated 3/14/2008 11:04:54 A.M. The Irish Roots website (www.irish-roots.net <http://www.irish-roots.net/> ) will eventually hold details of all church records, which in some cases go back to the year 1600. Already the website holds details of over 5.5m records of births, over 2.4m records of marriages, and over 1m deaths from that time period. It is the culmination of 25 years' work by historians who have studied every conceivable resource, from records of baptisms and marriages to gravestone inscriptions. The website was officially launched today on the Jeanie Johnston in Dublin by Arts Minister Séamus Brennan and Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness. It is free to do a general search on the site, but €5 for a more detailed search thereafter. To obtain a copy of a birth record from the General Records Office you need to quote the year, quarter, volume and page number. 2. Mike I am very much aware of those problems. My mother was a Census taker back in the 40's and my Great Aunt was a census taker in 1900. What I am referring to is the case where the hand writing was not very clear and any American would know some of the names to where he would pick something close to the original, but because of the outsourcing they seem to come up with a name that would resemble something more like an East Indian. When you check the index and can't find the name, but when you go to the actual written Census, there it is, big as life, with lousy penmanship. Sometimes, soundex does not help in these cases. 3. <<Then we wonder why we can't find dear Uncle Joe Blow when it is indexed under Joe Blou, Blew, Bloo or whatever name they determined it looked like.>> I would hope that anyone doing any searching would use the Soundex rules and search for all names that have the same soundex value. I cannot remember all of them but you ignore vowels and double letters are two rules. For Irish names you should also search ignoring the Gaelic prefixes: Leary for O'Leary, Carthy for McCarthy etc. Beofer you too badly malign the transcribers, for the census, a lot of those "errors" are in the originals. When someone was not home it was common to get the information from the neighbors rather than walk/ride back later. The neighbors may well have guessed at a lot of the information. Also in the mid-19th Century, a lot of Irish still had a strong residual distrust of Government and English speaking "officials". And lying to an Englishman is not a sin covered by Irish morality.
