Hello list, Have been a while since I wrote to this list. With the sudden death of my husband, Joe, on 21st April this year, I have not had any time to spend with my family history. So hoping to get back to all of this again which is also good to keep me busy thinking of something else. I met some old friends recently and they have become stuck trying to find a town in Ireland or where it was situated. Apparently it is not on the maps they have. I think someone on the list showed a url site where one can look at the maps showing the old and new names of towns etc. Can someone please send me that site if it is available? The friends hope to go to Ireland next May and find where their ancestors lived. Many thanks for your kind help and glad to be back again. Kind regards, Mary Mizzi (Hooley) with new email address [email protected] please delete former email [email protected]
Hello, Are these lists indexed? What are the dates covered? Thanks, Bev W
Bev I have never seen any index of thie Tithes lists. But that doesn't mean there aren't any. I believe that the Tithe survey in Kerry was done about in the late 1820s. "The Tithe Applotment Books record the results of a unique land survey taken to determine the amount of tax payable by landholders to the Church of Ireland. [Catholic had to pay, too] They are known as the Tithe Applotment Books because the results of this land survey were originally compiled in nearly 2,000 hand-written books. This data set represents a virtual census for pre-Famine Ireland. It took from 1812 to 1838 to do this survey. Prior to 1823, tenants had to contribute a portion of their crops to the Church of Ireland. In the original enumeration, each landholder was recorded along with details such as townland, size of holding, land quality and types of crops. The amount of tithe payable by each landholder was based on all of these factors and calculated by a formula using the average price of wheat and oats from 1816-23." "Not surprisingly, tithes were fiercely resented by those who were not members of the Church of Ireland, and all the more because the tax was not payable on all land; the exemptions produced spectacular inequalities. In Munster, for instance, tithes were payable on potato patches, but not on grassland, with the result that the poorest had to pay most. The exemptions also mean that the Tithe Books are not comprehensive. Apart from the fact that they omit entirely anyone not in occupation of land, certain categories of land, varying from area to area, are simply passed over in silence. Although not a full list of householders they nonetheless do constitute the only country-wide survey for the period, and are valuable precisely because the heaviest burden of tithes fell on the poorest, for whom few other records survive." Griffiths Valuation done from 1850 to 1868 was done to revalue land after the devastation caused by the Great Famine. Griffiths includes values for structures upon the land also. Kerry was published with the early counties (because it was one of the last ones done in the Tithe) in 1853; probably surveyed sometime between 1848 to 51 or so. http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/records/land/tiap.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griffith%27s_valuation -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Sunday, August 22, 2010 6:50 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [IRL-KERRY] Fwd: Kerry - Tithes Lists -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Sun, Aug 22, 2010 7:08 am Subject: Re: [IRL-KERRY] Kerry - Tithes Lists Ray, Are these Tithes lists indexed? Hello, all -- Death record: The 1911 census shows my ggg grandmother, Hannah (Joanna) Ferris, age 79 living in Groin, Killarney with her son and family. I have been unable to find a death record in the Irish civil registration Index on familysearch.org. Any advice or where to look next? Thank you, Meg Kenagy Oregon
Quinnipiac University, Hamden, Connecticut has been on line supplying information for several years now. Various topics available. My cousins daughter is the Associate Vice President for Online Programs. Hamden is North of New Haven and well south of Hartford. Also, Godfrey Memorial Library, which does require membership, is another great source of Irish records . Godfrey is located in Middletown, Conn. I think the yearly membership is $35.00 but not sure. I got a package deal for five years. Many Irish immigrants arrived in New York, went directly to jobs in Connecticut. Liz - enjoying the warm summer In a message dated 8/20/2010 11:07:40 A.M. If you opened the link, you may have noted that the papers are located on a Quinnipiac University web page. I don't know much about it but it is located in Connecticut. And it has a wonderful Irish collection, including their An Gorta Mor (The Great Hunger) pages. http://www.thegreathunger.org/ Click on "Collection" and you will see where the Killarney papers are located. But the first item on the collection page, if you are really, really, really serious about Irish research are the British Parliamentary Papers. The English Parliament (Commons/Lords) would commission research studies regularly about subjects that they were concerned about and those Parliamentary Papers contain tremendous amounts of information (in this case on Ireland) in the 19th century. Much of it of course has nothing to do with genealogy. But if you know where your ancestors lived, there will be information on their areas: social services, education, road buildinig, insurrections, infrastructure, etc. Going through it would be tedious, but you could find wonderful information. I don't know if the "Second Report of the Commissioners of Irish Education Inquiry ("Data for the Year 1824" is there. I don't have time to look today. The Irish Genealogical Society International purchased the microfilm for it some years ago and I did some research in it. That report contains a survey of every, and I do mean every, school in Ireland in the early 1820s, with location, physical condition of school (hovel, mud hut, brick, etc.), teacher (one of my Reidys taught near Meenleitrim), costs, religion, texts, charities that supported them, etc. The Parliament was considering setting up the National School system for Ireland (they had done it a few years earlier and the Act of Union had only been passed in 1800) and they wanted to know what the education conditions were like. They commissioned the Catholic and CofI priests to collect the data (and compared them in case one or the other exaggerated the size of their schools). This is a wonderful reference. The condition of the school and its location would tell you about the condition of the neighborhood. And maybe like me you might find a possible relative as a teacher. But it takes work to go through. All of you who are at "brick walls" (like me) should consider going through some of these Parliamentary Papers to see what's there. And please report back to the list. The An Gorta More collection also includes books, videos and photos. Good Luck. I don't recall seeing this before, but it is a wonderful resource. Rough typewritten transcriptions of the Killarney Poor Law Union Board of Guardians minutes for 1845-1848. This pretty much encompasses the time period of the Great Famine. The Workhouse minutes books, scanned from the original Killarney Union Minute book are rough records kept by the Killarney Union Board of Guardian meetings. These pages document the activities of the workhouses, including numbers of the homeless seeking shelter, descriptions of those accepted or denied, and the cost and disbursement of provisions. Minute books have been abstracted, and as they are completely transcribed, they will be added to the website. The activities of the Killarney Poor Law Union were overseen by nine ex-officio Guardians and 27 elected Guardians from the Union's 11 electoral divisions. Their responsibilities included taking account of the Union's funds and expenditures and overseeing the operations of the Killarney Workhouse http://www.thegreathunger.org/TheCollection/KillarneyMinutes/ There rarely will be names of inmates (those housed in the Killarney Workhouse. But going through the minute books will give you an idea of how severe the Famine hit the people of that area. The Famine did not strike severely everywhere. Maybe your ancestors were better off, or worse off, than their neighbors. Ray Marshall Minneapolis, where the temps have been moderate and the humidity love, recently.
Jack, Steve, List, I have Mara's in my tree from Milltown. The family of Jeremiah Mara and Ellen Moriarty. I'm related to their children both maternally and paternally! This family ended up in Worcester, MA. One of the grandchildren of Jeremiah and Ellen became a Worcester City Councilor. Son Michael Mara fought in the Civil War. If anybody is connected to these Mara's I have obits on some of them, marriages etc. They came over piecemeal..some as early as 1860's. The surname, "Mara" often comes to us as, or comes from the following: Omara, O'Mara, Meara, O'Meara. In my family tree, we have 'em and there are some Timothy and Cornelius entries I've found, especially through the Kerry Diocese records at http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/ Go to the site and enter his name and the county and you'll find 142 hits. For Timothy marriages, I see a Timothy Meara of Milltown (parents: John Meara & Johanna Shea) marrying Julia Neil (parents John Neil & Mary Mullins), also of Milltown marrying 30 Sep 1880 in Killarney Parish. Looks to me like they had the following children: Mary Neil 1878, in Killarney (before marriage?) Ellen Mara 1884 in Killorgan (unless this was a different TImothy Meara & Julia Neil) John Mara 1887 in Milltown David Mara 1890 in Milltown Catherine Mara 1891 in Milltown Timothy Meara 1893 in Milltown Honora Meara 1894 in Milltown Matbe Timothy went back? Maybe they were trying to hide the baby out of wedlock? Maybe it's a different couple. For Cornelius marriages, I see a Cornelius Mara of Knockeenduve marrying Johanna Lynch of the same town on April 10, 1880 in the parish of Killarney. That could easily be your Cornelius if they had a 3-year old in 1883. I see Bridget Mara of Droumlisk baptised 5 Jun 1888, daughter of Timothy Mara & Bridget Shea. That's in the parish of Kenmare, which would have been a tought journey to Killarney, I think. Looking at baptisms around 1880, I see a Timothy being baptized May 11, 1873 in Droumduhig (probably part of my line) whose father was Jeremiah Meara & mother Mary Foley. One of the sponsors was Cornelius Meara. An uncle? A grandfather? On 20 April 1874, Cornelius & Bridget Mara had daughter Margaret baptized in Coolbane. But that's not in the Killarney parish, although it's only about 10 miles from Killarney itself. 7 Feb 1881 shows Jeremiah Meara baptised, son of Cornelius Meara and Johanna Lynch, in Knoceenduve. 20 Jul 1882, it was John Meara - same parents, etc. 14 Mar 1884, Mary Meara - same parents, etc (only here, they're spelling the town as Knockeenduff). 21 May 1886 shows Cornelius, same parents. etc 30 July 1889 was Julia, same family 20 Dec 1891 was Patrick 17 Apr 1898 was Johanna Perhaps some of this squares with what you know about your family. As for me, I have a G-G-G-Grandfather named Cornelius Meara. Most of our Mearas came from Droumduhig / Droumdoohig / Drumduhig (take your pick of spelloings & mix 'em up). One of Cornelius' daughters, Honora, was born in 1843, but I don't show her as having a brother named Cornelius. Anyhow, happy hunting. Slaínte! Steve Burgess >Today's Topics: > > 1. Jack, I'm still a bit of an amateur at this, but maybe I can help a little here. Fiona, The only information I have is that my mother said they were from County Kerry, probably the Killarney area. No more details than that in Ireland. I found the boat record in 1883 when they landed in Boston. It included Timothy and Bertha (age 3). I knew her as Bridgit, and later US Census records show her as Bridgit. They were Roman Catholic. Thank you for your reply. I know this is not a lot of information to go on. I am trying to locate information about my grandmother, Bridget or Bertha Mara. She was born about 1880 and emigrated to US in 1883 with her father, Timothy Cornelius Mara (b. about 1845). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Jack Clark 707.688.1500 [email protected]
Looking for information on John Canty, father William. Listed in 1861 Middlesex/London - Poplar, Millwall census as a shoemaker, b. Co. Kerry. With children Wm., 22. b. Kerry and Ellen, 14, b. Kerry and son Maurice, 4, b. England. Cornelius Canty may be a brother to John. Have no name for John's first wife. Appears John married his second wife Margaret, with whom he had Maurice in about 1857. She died abt. 1859. There is a possibility some of this family emigrated to Canada late 1860's. Thanks for any help. Kathleen [email protected]
Kate It's been a few days since your post so I don't know if you already got this information. You can search the Irish civil registration Index Church of Ireland marriages from 1846 From 1864-1959 for births deaths marriages of all denominations at this link http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails&c=fs%3A1408347 If you see a likely birth registration -take the references e.g. Year Registration district Quarter (only from 1878) volume and page ref. You can then order the cert giving the references at www.groireland.ie You can order a photocopy of the entry and it costs less than the certificate and has the same information on it. Hope this is of help.
