    1. [IRL-KERRY] Old Kerry Baptism Records
    2. William Dunbar
    3. Hi: Seems like about a year ago I was looking at a Kerry site that had lots of old Kerry Baptism (and maybe Marriage records) I think from Catholic Parish records. Can't recall the address. Can anyone help me? Thanks. Bill in Montana

    3. It's most probable that ships embarking from Tralee and Limerick would have been sail powered. By 1870 or so, the large ocean liners began to ply the seas carrying thousands of passengers. Much safer, much healthier, much shorter passage time, more professional, steerage class probably roomier and probably cheaper. Most who lived near Cork met the Liverpool ships as the "topped off" their load at Cobh. Most other Irish after that probably went to Liverpool to catch the big ships.

    2. My grandmother's grandmother sailed from Tralee approx. 1851. {I don't have the papers in front of me and I'm too lazy at the moment to get them out.} Anyway her ship's papers said she left from Tralee, and since the port was too shallow, another smaller boat took her out to her ship which lay just outside where the water was deeper. Just thought I'd tell you what I learned a few years back. FYI. Darlene > > > (Note that Tralee and Blennerville are the same port) > > There were no deep water ports in Ireland. 3. Hi, Marge, For what it's worth, I have O'Connors as well. My only info is Bartholomew O'Connor, b. Ireland, married to Margaret ( ?), b. Ireland , and who was in the Middletown/Portland area of Connecticut when their son William H. was born in 1852. I have only tentative information after that on Barth. Margaret may have died between Wm's birth and 1860, when I find a Barth. O'Connor, with a different wife in Boston. There is a son William, of the right age to be his son. William married Margaret L. McCarty in Boston in 1872. There were three sons born, Bartholomew, Charles and William, all of whom died very young. the only daughter, Mary Ann, (b.1877), survived. She became my grandmother. I will send the information on Bartholomew's second wife and all children in a separate email. Ann

    1. [IRL-KERRY] Immigration Departure Ports 1874
    2. Jenny B
    3. I appreciate I am in all probability not going to obtain a positive location - I am looking more for the most likely departure point. My great grandfather Timothy SUGRUE left Gravesend on 18 September 1874 bound for New Zealand aboard the Geraldine Paget. I have copies of the passenger lists, Surgeons Report etc and the newspaper reports of the voyage as published in the Christchurch Star after the arrival of the ship at Lyttelton. The Captains report makes no mention of the ship having called at any ports, for passengers to embark, after it had left Gravesend therefore it is safe to assume that Tim had to make his way from his townland of Dromavalla in the Parish of Ballymacelligott to Gravesend. This was 1874 - was Blennerville being used as a port at that time for ships between Kerry and England or was Blennerville used more in the late 1840's and 1850's as a departure point for Irish immigrants direct to the US during and after the famine? Is it more likely in 1874, Tim would have left Kerry for Gravesend from Blennerville or the Cobh of Cork? Any other options? Would welcome thoughts of this topic or my being directed to a good web site that covers this topic. With thanks. 3. (Note that Tralee and Blennerville are the same port) There were no deep water ports in Ireland. So where did the Irish board the boats? Well, some sailed from Tralee, Cork City, and Cobh even before 1862. By that time a railroad had been completed from Tralee to Cobh, so few left from Tralee anymore, most went to Cobh or Cork to start their journey. Making Cork the last port of call put the ships in warmer and more gentle waters and were on the English route from Plymouth to the new world. Many of the people that "went from Cork" actually went from Cobh. Sailing out of Cobh/Cove, the Port of Cork, the large ships would anchor at sea and they would ferry the "topping off passengers" out to the ship. Ships also left from Limerick to Canada, taking people and bringing back lumber. The only main ports of departure from Ireland were (1) going to Liverpool, mostly families from the northern counties did that (2) Cobh/Queenstown, mostly from the southern ports and (3) some northern people also went to Glasgow. In much earlier years there were also departures from other ports such as Larne. The major ports for the years of 1846-1851 were Dublin, Newery, Galway, Cork, Limerick, Belfast, Londonderry, Waterford, Liverpool and Silgo. 1. [IRL-KERRY] New Zealand Quake
    2. 7.2 Magnitude Quake Strikes New Zealand A 7.2 magnitude earthquake has struck near Christchurch, New Zealand, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. As we get ready for Hurricane Earl-mostlikely a big fizzle, we wonder if our NZ list members are all okay today. Eileen in Mass In a message dated 9/3/2010 4:41:48 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: Trish asks: === Does any one know what has happened to Pete our expert on Irish maps === Trish, I'm here, but I haven't seen many queries to which I felt qualified - or which remained - to answer. Many reasons, I suppose, for that. The traffic on the lists has been very light. The few questions regarding geography have often been answered by others using Google maps, etc. before I am able to reply (I'm on the digest form of all of my lists, so others often respond before I even see the original request). That's fine - I don't feel "slighted" by that.....and it gives me time for other things [gr]. Google maps don't really work well with my slow dial-up connection in any case, and I've never felt a need for them. I still get a number of off-list inquiries to keep life interesting. The "interesting life" has kept me occupied (and pre-occupied) all summer. Once Dad hit his 100th birthday on July 7th (the rest of the family converged on the Buffalo - western NY state - area where my parents live, for the event), he seemed to have reached a realization that life is finite, after all. Within days, he had a protracted series of TIAs (transient ischemic attacks) and had more "bad days" than good ones. Mom looked after him as well as she could, and I stayed with them for several weeks during this period. My daughter could see continuing problems with their situation and offered to have them come live with her (just a few miles from me, here, in western Mass.). They agreed. Dad felt uncomfortable driving at his age and, living alone together at home, they were frequently on the road for shopping, visiting friends, etc. My parents realized that their life would be much simpler and relaxed if they moved-in to my daughter's house (I don't have any room in my house). My daughter started preparing an unused ground-floor room for them to stay, and I remained in Buffalo with them while the room was evolving. After a couple of weeks, it was time. My daughter made the 700-mile round-trip from her home and returned there with my parents along. I remained in Buffalo while movers loaded all of the major furniture to take to my daughter's house. I have been driving back-and-forth frequently (one trip with a large box truck), to move other belongings. All in all, my daughter and grandson and myself have moved essentially everything from the house other than the furniture moved by the professionals. It is piled-up in two bays of my daughter's garage and everywhere throughout my house. It will take months to get it organized. My parents had lived in that house for 75 of their 78 years of marriage.......so they had accumulated quite a few things [gr]. Now, we are trying to prepare the house for sale. Not an easy job - at such a distance. Yesterday, we celebrated Mom's 100th birthday. Nothing fancy. Mom and Dad are just "taking it easy", as centenarians are entitled to do.
