It is my understanding that the Ministers, Parish Priests etc, would travel to the smaller Canadian communities to do the Baptisms. Therefore, many Baptism records would be recorded at one time - each month. They may not have know the actual birth date. Liz in sunny Space Coast Florida In a message dated 9/16/2010 4:09:52 P.M. Hello, I am new to this list and have a question. My grandfather and his eight siblings were all born in County Kerry near Tralee. Several years ago I acquired the Civil Registration records for all their births. I recently found the site where the Catholic Church records are online. I found all these people, but the dates of their births are not the same as on the civil records. Some are different as a few days, some are a couple of weeks. Does anyone know why there is such a discrepancy in birth dates? It seems to me that the church records are probably the correct dates as the baptisms usually occurred within a few days of the birth. Nancy Sheehan Schroeder
Nancy, The Irish civil registration system assessed penalties for late registration. Sometimes there were extenuating circumstances as to why parents waited. To avoid a fine some parents would claim a birth date later than the real one. For many parents the religious duty and traditional nature of baptism took precedence over the "new" and British-mandated civil system, so relying on the baptismal date is probably safer. In my family, my Kerry-born grandmother was listed on the civil records as being born two weeks past her baptismal date (in 1878). So you can see which I believe! I don't know if the copper mines in Michigan are related to Kerry and Beara, but my thinking is that possible ancestors might be in this cemetery? Thanks to all who answered my query. I guess no one is related to my particular line. As far as the English connection goes tho, there still could be a connection. Family lore has it that the Talbot & Howard families both originated in England. Actually, I live in Wauwatosa which borders Brookfield. Thanks again, Larry Talbot in rainy Wisconsin PS......anybody know where Glanrahily is? I assume somewhere around Tralee!
I looked through all of Sister Pascal's scribbles, but I'm sorry to say her Kelly line doesn't seem to intersect with yours....my gut is telling me there is a connection as I know my connection to Sister was also in Causeway + Lixnaw. I'll let you know if I find anything! Michael - thank you for this information. Are you talking about trains from Cork in to Tralee in 1859? Was there a direct line between Cork and Tralee at this time? I tried yesterday to find this information on Google but did not have much success. My initial query regarding the most likely route for immigrants around 1874 leaving Tralee to join a ship at Gravesend seems to have created interest. Thank you to all those who responded. Would I be correct in concluding that in all probability, an immigrant from near Tralee joining a ship in London or Gravesend would journey by train from Tralee to Cork and then by boat to the English port of embarking for New Zealand - in this case the 'Geraldine Paget' at Gravesend. The 'Geraldine Paget' did not call at any ports in Ireland on its way to New Zealand so my great grandfather Tim SUGRUE must have made his way to Gravesend. Would the Tralee - Cork - Gravesend route have been more likely that taking a smaller ship directly between Tralee (Blennerville) and Gravesend? Thoughts welcomed! My great uncle age 65 went back to Ireland to get birthcertificate to get SS, He almost died on the Queen Mary but a couple, who passengers, took him under their wing so to speak. When he got to Cobh he took a wagon ( can't remember the Irish name) to The Glen, Rathkerian near Valentia Island. He was very unhappy about the ride. The wheels were old wooden ones and hit every bump, rock, or what ever. Going back to the boat he walked. He was 65 then. 1938 before the war. Then he returned to Ireland in 1950+/- and died in 1953. I can still see him in his green fedora hat and thorn walking stick. I still have. But if there was no train they walked or at least some did. I have that same problem, and the best I can pin down the arrival is by the birth of the children. The first child was born in Ireland in 1854 The next child was born in the US in 1857. Either Pennsylvania or Maryland, depending on which Census you read. Either way, it eliminates the New York, Boston and Canadian ports of entry. (I hope) Seems they didn't know or care where they landed, and I have no idea how long they lived in either Md or Pa, ,other then the rest of the children were all born in Connecticut. Hi Anne, Thanks, but I was asking in general. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find out from where my ancestors sailed and to which ports in NA they Arrived. Still short too much info. Hi List, I was in Blennerville last week, now in Herefordshire. These photos are of the ships names that left Tralee during that period. It seems that the population then moved to Cork for depart. The windmill and the museum where the book is, is well worth a visit as it has a good street diorama and a story on how the emigrants were treated. The Blennerville book is quite a large heavy tome with a list of names of those mentioned in the book at the back. But not a list of all those who left from there. You will have to locate the ships' manifests from somewhere to check it. Good luck. Fred.. -----Original Message----- From: Fred [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, 6 September 2010 1:30 AM To: 'Jenny B' Subject: RE: [IRL-KERRY] Immigration Departure Ports 1874 Hi, here are photos of all the ships departing from Blennerville. I have just left there, pity you were not 1 day earlier with the em. Hope it helps Fred .. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jenny B Sent: Sunday, 5 September 2010 3:12 PM To: 'Kerry List' Subject: [IRL-KERRY] Immigration Departure Ports 1874 I appreciate I am in all probability not going to obtain a positive location - I am looking more for the most likely departure point. My great grandfather Timothy SUGRUE left Gravesend on 18 September 1874 bound for New Zealand aboard the Geraldine Paget. I have copies of the passenger lists, Surgeons Report etc and the newspaper reports of the voyage as published in the Christchurch Star after the arrival of the ship at Lyttelton. The Captains report makes no mention of the ship having called at any ports, for passengers to embark, after it had left Gravesend therefore it is safe to assume that Tim had to make his way from his townland of Dromavalla in the Parish of Ballymacelligott to Gravesend. This was 1874 - was Blennerville being used as a port at that time for ships between Kerry and England or was Blennerville used more in the late 1840's
Ray, so you made the Uncertified Mechanic list! And to think it all started with a spark plug. Congratulations! ~Patsy Expecting cool weather tomorrow (today, really) and perhaps some rain. We haven't seen much rain here in western Massachusetts this summer. Not a good thing... >>"As a general rule, it is pretty rare to find passenger lists in the port of departure in Europe. The official attitude for the steerage passengers was on the order of "good riddance." Ray Marshall Uncertified mechanic in Minneapolis"<<
