    3. Kitty You can't post 'pictures' on rootsweb emails. Text messages don't allow attachments. But what you could do is post a picture to your own web page, or to a third party site such as www.photobucket.com (and there are hundreds of such sites, I believe) and then just post a link to your picture, or digital image or scan of some difficult writing, in your rootsweb message. But that could be risky, too. I would be very reluctant to click on a link from someone I didn't know from a strange website. But probably Photobucket, Picasa, Flickr and other sites are OK. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photo_sharing Ray Marshall Where it's nice today, but sure wasn't yesterday, in Minneapolis. 1. [IRL-KERRY] Houlihan, Goggin, Lucitt; Ballyferriter
    2. Thanks to the irishgenealogy.ie site I have found several records which I believe pertain to my Goggin line. Catherine Goggin, my 3rd great grandmother was the wife of Patrick Houlihan according to baptismal records of their children. I haven't found the marriage record as yet but the baptismal records for Houlihan children all point to Catherine and Patrick as the parents. In doing the online research, I have found siblings of Catherine Goggin(1809) to include Mary(1814), Elizabeth(1826),David(1830), Michael(1823) and one whose given name nor gender(1816) were recorded. There may have been others as yet not found. All are the children of James Goggin and Mary Lucitt and all were baptized in Ballyferriter on the Dingle peninsula. If any of this seems familiar I'd love to compare notes.

    1. [IRL-KERRY] Barrett, Corridan, Listowel, Kerry
    2. I am interested in seeking out any descendants from my Barrett line of the family. From what I know, Edmond(Edward) Barrett and Mary Corridan(en) had a total of ten children, four of whom I have been able to trace to Holyoke, MA. My great grandmother Catherine(1866), her sister Margaret(1860) and sisters Johanna(1875)and Bridget(April 1870) all came to the US and married in Holyoke. Catherine married Jeremiah Donoghue from Causeway, Kerry; Margaret married John Maloney and Johanna and Bridget both married Patrick Sheehan, Bridget first and when she died then Johanna. I've been able to trace those four but I've wondered about the other siblings, Mary(1862),John( January 1872), Joanna(1867), and Thomas( 1877). Did they stay in Ireland or emigrate to the US ? Are there still Barrett family members in the Listowel area ? I have recently found that Honora(1880)and Ellen(1864)did remain in Ireland to raise their families. Ellen married Michael Brick while Honora had two children although a husband is not listed in the census records. Also, I've wondered about the date and place of burial for Edmond and Mary Corridan Barrett ? All of their children were baptized at St. Mary's in Listowel but I don't believe that Edmond and Mary married there. I think that Edward/Edmond died between 1901 and 1911 but I'm not sure about his widow, Mary Corridan Barrett. It looks like she was still alive at the time of the 1911 census. She was living with Honora and her children. Also, I'm not 100% sure of this but it appears that there is a connection between the Barrett family and the Seward family in Ireland. Does any of this sound familiar to any on this list ? Any suggestions as to finding out more about this family ?

    3. While most of us have not (or cannot) get as far back as 1641 in tracing our ancestors, this rebellion is an important part of Irish history (about which I knew very little). Doing a county search for Kerry on the site linked in the article below results in 62 results (of depositions and examinations), so who knows, you may find something there. I didn't really have time to look briefly at more than one or two. http://www.researchbuzz.org/r/?p=2389&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+researchbuzz%2Fmain+%28ResearchBuzz%29&utm_content=Yahoo%21+Mail Marge

    2. Trish Jensen
    3. Marge, It gives me goose bumps to read your story. I know you have been on the list as long as I have , so congratulations , well done. Wish it were me , but Marge is correct it does take years and perseverance . Each time you open the computer start a new search but think it through. Who can I ask is most important ,some one ,some where has the information We help each other . My story on my fathers side does not centre on Kerry. They were Irish from Balbriggan Co Dublin but living in England I could not find my grandfather's daughter who was born in Boston M.A I think when her mother died she went to live with her grandfather in Falmouth Cornwall. Her name was Lilly Fawkner. This search has gone on for at least 12 years. In Australia ,USA and England One of our loyal Kerry followers said to me Trish , there is a marriage in the NSW records for Mary Elizabeth Fawkner Now I live in NSW , had seen that marriage for at least for the last 10 years but ignored it as the three son's of my grandfather were too young to have a child called Mary So my Kerry list friend said "Go on have a look at it , Lilly is short for Elizabeth." Now there she was right under my nose as I had never heard that Lilly could be short for Elizabeth. So some times it helps for some one to make a suggestion . And there you have it! Good luck to all our Kerry friends Trish. >I tried to post this once before, but after writing for about 1/2 an > hour I hit a wrong

    1. [IRL-KERRY] Fwd: Finding ancestors in Ireland with online resources and a little luck
    2. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Sat, Oct 30, 2010 4:08 pm Subject: Re: [IRL-KERRY] Finding ancestors in Ireland with online resources and a little luck Hi...    You all are inspiring me. Let me first say that the 1880 census in Kings Co. NY., states that my great great grandfather, Samuel Rawlins, was born in Ireland to English parents.  He left Ireland for the US in 1867 and ultimately spent many years working at sea before settling down in Brooklyn. He married a German woman and had a short and sometimes chaotic life.  Samuel died in Philadelphia in 1884 at the age of 45.    When I started to work on this line, about 10 years ago, I found that a cousin had posted a little bit of information on Family Tree Maker and claimed my ancestor was from Cork. I eventually found an elderly aunt who believed that our Samuel was from Dublin. This prompted me to spend several years working with an Irish researcher in both Dublin and Cork, learning about every Rawlins descendant but my own.    Finally, I found a baptismal record in Middlesex,( performed six years after my ancestor was born) that identified my gggrandfather and his family. I was thrilled! It didn't last long, however, when it became impossible to find the family in any of the English census records. What I came to determine is that my ancestors were itinerate workers, who did not own land and traveled from place to place, back and forth from England to Ireland.    While I have several records for my ancestor here in the States, I lack that one link to a birthplace in Ireland. Not only that, but my 3gg....also a Samuel Rawlins, is even more elusive in records. We know that Samuel Sr. was a "watch finisher". He may have given up the trade by the 1860s, however when it became obsolete. I have also been unable to find a marriage record for Samuel's wife, Mary...who may have been of Irish descent. What keeps me going is that just when I seem to hit a dead end, I find something that takes me a tiny bit further.    I am cautiously ordering GRO records and anxiously awaiting for somebody to get the 1875 Kings Co. NY state census on line. 1. [IRL-KERRY] Finding ancestors in Ireland with online resources and a little luck
    2. I tried to post this once before, but after writing for about 1/2 an hour I hit a wrong key on my new keyboard and erased the whole thing! I was too tired and lazy to do it over again but I need to add my 2 bits to Rays suggestions. As some of you know, I recently found my Kelly cousins in Kerry. This is the first major breakthrough on my Dad's side in ten, yes 10, years and two trips to Ireland! All because of the church records online. What I knew: My Golden , John Golden and Mary Kelly, family lived in Cappamore in 1871 My great grandmother gave birth to 10 children, only 5 survived to 1900 My grandfather, John - like his father and grandfathers, was born in 1863-4 and was the oldest of the known children and named John after his grandfather. Seems like the first born son - right? Mary Kelly's parents were John Kelly and Catherine O'Connor There was a Mortimer Kelly and a Mary Golden living in the townland of Kells in Griffiths Valuation - 1850 ish. They left Ireland in 1883 Children were: John - 1863-4, Mortimer - ?, twins Alice and Denis - 1866, Daniel - 1868 and Catherine - 1871. What I did not know: When and where the couple were married (the only record I could ever find was one in Scotland in 1858 but names of the parents did not match and the couple had a son James - a name I had never heard in this family)? Where was Mary from - I thought maybe she came from Kells? What was John's mother's name? Who were the other children? Results: In searching the church records from the comfort of my own home (I had already searched the records for Caherciveen at the National Library in Dublin because that is where Catherine was baptized) I found: Elizabeth - 1851 Mary - 1855 Matthew - 1858 Tim (remember Mortimer?) - 1860 I am still missing one child, probably born between 1851 and 1855, but the BIG item of interest was that Elizabeth was born to John and Mary who were living in Kells but she was baptized in the parish of Causeway - a VERY long journey away. Now about a two hour drive and then more like two days travel time. I NEVER would have thought to look that far away since there were Kellys living in Kells and I ASSUMED that Mary was one of them. The baptismal sponsors were John Kelly and Catherine O'Connor - the grandparents. Now I was thrilled to find this and recorded all of this information. Then when someone else had the same situation but had the marriage date and a gap before the first child, I did the same thing for them and found another child who was baptized in Mom's home parish. Then I thought to look a little further. I looked at Griffiths Valuation and found that there were only 2 Kellys living in the corresponding civil parish and both in the townland of Kilmore - John and Ambrose. Then I looked at the 1901 and 1911 census records and found that there were still Kellys living there. I then checked the Valuation Office online records and found a Patrick Kelly listed as currently owning that property. I sent off a letter explaining how I was related to him and am now in touch with my 4th cousin (daughter of Patrick) and her family. They are descendants of Ambrose who was John's brother. I now know that my John Kelly was born 1796, Ambrose was born 1800 and their father was John born 1770 at Banna and is buried at Ardfert. I was sent a four generation chart of Ambrose's descendants, some of whom came to Indiana and Illinois. I am in contact with cousins descended from the Indiana line and am researching the line that went to Chicago. I am still working on adding them to my family tree. The next thing is to plan another trip to Ireland to see the Kelly family homestead, maybe next year but more likely the following year. Check all the resources that you can think of and ask those relatives who went before you for a little help. I am so thrilled that I can't put it into words. This is a major brick wall that has come down. However, I forgot something. I still do not know who Mary's siblings were. They are not in the online church records. So, be sure to think of all your known relatives. So, I asked myself, "Who would currently have Mary's family bible and/or family history?" Her oldest daughter of course, and then her oldest daughter, etc. So, I contacted another cousin who knew this person and got her phone number. I called her and voila! She DID have it but had given it to her daughter who is currently living out of the country and it is in storage and not accessible until they return. It could be a while as her husband works for the government, but it does go back to the 1700s according to my cousin. The best part is that I now talk to this cousin almost every week. What I really need to do is plan a family reunion so we can all get together and meet each other in person. That will be a while! Never give up. Here are the websites used: Online church records: http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/ Irish Census: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ Valuation Office: http://www.valoff.ie/search/search.asp -- Slán, Marge in Southern California Searching: Golden, Sullivan, Kelly, Shea, in Kerry and Connecticut O'Connor in Kerry Fee, Cassidy, Gilbride in Fermanagh, Cavan and Connecticut Lynch in Limerick and Connecticut Walsh, Stackpole, Garry/Garrey/McGarrey, Donovan in Kildare

    2. Ray Marshall
    3. Darlene: Don't be depressed. Almost never do people find the homes of their ancestor in Ireland by searching in Ireland. You need to find clues in the U.S., or Oz, or wherever. I found my Scanlon ancestors in Waterford because one of them carved his own tombstone and he put "Waterford" on it. I found my ancestors in Meenleitrim North, Knocknagoshel, becuae I had two elderly aunts who knew where their dad was born. Places to look when you are trying to find your roots in Ireland are death certificates, cemetery records, church records, obits, News articles, vanity biography books (it says in one of those for a cousin that he was born in Kerry), scraps of paper from other people's genealogy notes (On an unsigned Family Record Sheet I found an entry saying that a gg-gm was from Listowel. I found her in nearby Duagh), newspaper articles, military records, insurance policies, etc. If you have an ancestor who lived in a town with a newspaper that got microfilmed, Genealogybank.com might have scanned every article in that paper. You can browse it for free, seeing the headlines of the articles that might give you an indication as to something involving an ancestor. I've got one front page huge type article reporting on the death of a cousin who was shot dead while going for a walk with somebody else's wife. As far as I know the crime was never solved. But the police did talk to the obvious suspect. This all sounds great and wish I could use it!! But with no knowledge of where my 2 blockbusters lived in "Ireland" it seems hopeless to me. One is better cause I at least have some idea of where he might have come from with supposed dates: County Clare. The other, absolutely no idea as to when, where, etc. I envy all of you who have access to and can use the available info.!!! Darlene

    3. Bev There is an Irish site www.irishnewsarchive.com/ that has a good range of Irish historical newpapersapart from the Irish Times and the London Times that have their own archives. The Kerryman is only digitised from the 1930's but the site has the Munster Express that would have covered Kerry for earlier dates. You can do a free search on it but need to subscribe to view. There are a range of different subscriptions. It is available for free in all or most Irish public libraries.
