    1. [IRL-KERRY] Doran family from Ballybunion County Kerry
    2. Denise Nicholls
    3. Hello, I am very new to family history research and would appreciate some help. I am trying to find information about my Great grandfather, Matthew Doran, from Ballybunion (Correct spelling? Ballybunnion on his marriage certificate) I would love to know when he was born - about 1850/51, maybe a year or 2 later, and when he left Ireland for Australia, perhaps via England. Also about his parents (John and Nora, nee Sullivan or O'Sullivan) and any brothers and sisters. The family were evicted from their home in Ballybunion and moved to Asdee. Is that a town nearby? Is there a way to find out if there are any Dorans still in the Ballybunion/Asdee area? The only definite information I have is that he married Bridget Breen (originally from Tipperary) in Toowoomba, Queensland, in 1880. If anyone can supply missing information, or give me an idea where to get information (I have had no luck on the sites I have searched), I would really appreciate it. Someone suggested I write to the parish priest in Ballybunion for baptism records. Is that an option I should try? Thank you and hoping for some information, Denise Nicholls (nee Doran) Please think of our environment and do not print this email. Warning: This message is for the named person's use only. 2. Helen
    3. Marge, Molly, List, The link explains a bit about the White's. I descend from White's in the Clogheen/Clonmel part of Tipp. In the late 1500's early 1600's 3 White brothers from Clonmel rose to fame in the Catholic church. One was bishop of Lismore, the others founded Irish College in Salamanca and was one of the scholars on Trinity College's original charter. I stumbled across the data in the Ecclesiastical Records of Ireland on google. During the Penal times the bishop hid with cousins in Kilcarroon, Tipp. the exact location of my White's. Funnily enough my White's in Kilcarroon married into the Barry family of Ballyporeen and they were very dark haired/dark eyed as opposed to the blonde White's. Here's the link: http://www.irishabroad.com/yourroots/genealogy/names/anglonorman/part6.asp Helen -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of M.Q. I've wondered the same thing myself. In the marriage record/register of the Basilica of Notre Dame in Montreal, the priest recorded the name of the mother of my 2nd great-grandmother (Mary Shea Doyle) as Mary White (father was Thomas Shea). And the Irish church records recently put online do include some of what appears to be baptisms of at least some of their children, or at least the parents are shown as Mary White and Thomas Shea. I don't really know much about "branch names," or maybe AKA names, or family nicknames that apparently were used in at least some places at one time to keep straight different branches of large extended families with the same, common surname. I vaguely recall that this was true in the Beara peninsula especially, and I think it was the Sullivans there (and maybe also in the nearby parts of Kerry, like in the Kenmare area) that had one or more "branch names." In fact, the seemingly very numerous Sheas in Kerry might themselves have been likely to resort to branch names. I don't really have any idea where those trying to differentiate a part of a family by using the nickname White might have come up with it, though. Maybe at the time of that branch-naming a part of the family (or just several influential individuals) tended to have blond hair? the children especially were tow-headed? adults got white-headed early? some were albinos? If White really was a branch name/nickname in my 3rd great-grandmother's case, I guess the fact that that surname was given at the time of her daughter's marriage might indicate that at least some continued on with the branch name and just dropped the original name. Does anybody know anything about this? 3. You've got to be careful and look at origiinal records as much as possible. Could White be a 'middle ' name like Mary Beth X or could White be carried over from a previous marriage? As well, in some times and places, the ladies actually retained their 'maiden' or famly/father's surname anyway. 3. My idea would be to consider the relationship of an "adopted" child as due to a step child situation in which the parent who brought the child intothe house dies. This might lead to a re defintion of the adoptive relationship or at least another way of talkingabout the same person. 1. [IRL-KERRY] Callaghan - Marge.
    2. Andy & Norma McAuliffe
    3. Marge: In your last post you mentioned Callaghans as possibly being from your Sneen area. My g-grandmother was Mary Callaghan, d/o Patrick Callaghan & Mary Howard, each b. Abt. 1790, who apparently claimed to be from Tralee. She married my g-grandfather Andrew Fogarty of Aghabeg West, in Paris, ON., Canada in 1852. I have not received any replies to past messages re. the Callaghans and wondered if there might be any connection to yours? Andy McAuliffe, Kitchener, ON

    2. Ray Marshall
    3. Thank you for sharing those, Marge! I just skimmed No. 2 and there was a lot of really interesting information about what Kerry was like in 1850 for the poor people. Specific mention of Tralee, Listowel, Castleisland, Killarney, Kingwilliamstown, etc. I would imagine that the observations about other areas of Ireland might have been quite applicable to Kerry communities, too. Kerry that might shed light on the conditions of life and the nature of the land there, especially in the area between Kenmare and Sneem (where my Sheas, Doyles, Foleys and Whites lived, and maybe Callaghans), I've done a little exploration and would like to share a few titles I've found so far, though barely looked at. Determined researchers with more time will no doubt find more, and I hope will share esp. significant findings/titles by posting them. You'll likely find others pertinent books easily if you check out the "related books" section on the main page of the books below. One book can lead to the next find. These books are all old and hence out of copyright so they appear in their entirety online. Trouble is, it's no longer possible/easy to just a few selected pages instead of having to download whole books and then print from them., or at least I don't know how to do it. If someone knows a way around this, I (and probably others) would really appreciate being enlightened. 1) Appendix to the Fourth Report of the Commissioners on the Nature and Extent of the Bogs in Ireland, 1814. http://books.google.com/books?id=8C9bAAAAQAAJ A lot of revelatory information, dating from about the time of my 2nd great-grandfather Jeremiah Doyle's birth near Sneem. 2) The Plantation Scheme, or, The west of Ireland as a field for investment, 1850. http://books.google.com/books?id=zzVSP-QEnDYC 3) THE SESSIONAL PAPERS PRINTED BY ORDER OF THE HOUSE OF LORDS OR PRESENTED BY ROYAL COMMAND, IN THE SESSION 1849 http://books.google.com/books?id=eRVcAAAAQAAJ 4) A hand book for travellers in Ireland: descriptive of its scenery, towns..., 3rd ed., 1844 http://books.google.com/books?id=tV0NAAAAYAAJ 5) The ocean plague: or, A voyage to Quebec in an Irish emigrant vessel : embracing a quarantine at Grosse Isle in 1847 : with notes illustrative of the ship-pestilence of that fatal year, 1848. http://books.google.com/books?id=aJ5s6aDoekIC That ought to be enough to keep you occupied for awhile if you haven't already discovered Google Books for background info about Kerry and Ireland! I wish I had time to poke around more myself. Marge

Kitty You can't post 'pictures' on rootsweb emails.  Text messages don't allow attachments. But what you could do is post a picture to your own web page, or to a third party site such as www.photobucket.com (and there are hundreds of such sites, I believe) and then just post a link to your picture, or digital image or scan of some difficult writing, in your rootsweb message. But that could be risky, too.  I would be very reluctant to click on a link from someone I didn't know from a strange website.  But probably Photobucket, Picasa, Flickr and other  sites are OK. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photo_sharing Ray Marshall Where it's nice today, but sure wasn't yesterday, in Minneapolis.  Gotta change my fake spare tire this weekend. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Kitty Sent: Friday, November 05, 2010 11:40 PM To: Reg Volk; [email protected] Subject: Re: [IRL-KERRY] Lettes? A lot of us are very good at reading old and difficult writing, and it would help to see the actual example. _______________ --------------- Policies of the IRL-Kerry List: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlker/mailing.html To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message. 1. Re: [IRL-KERRY] IRL-KERRY Digest, Vol 5, Issue 291
    2. I have a copy of the birth certificate of my grandfather, Edward Flavin. Someone has clearly written that Edmond Flahaven was born in the townland of Litter. Further research has determined that he was born in the townland of Letter. Sometimes scanning the document doesn't always help. In this case the writer at the Southern Health Board interpreted the townland name as Litter. Kay "Hi to all, I have a copy of the marriage license for my g.g.m. Mary Butler and g.g.f. John Sullivan, married in Cahirciveen in 1866. The license says she was from Lettes. Does anyone have a clue where that is? Dennis Sullivan"
