Inchiquin Lough is the largest of a series of lakes (the others are the Cloonee Loughs) stretching from the Kenmare River estuary down to the Glaninchiquin area, 5 to 6 miles NE of the small town of Lauragh - but much farther by road; perhaps twice that distance [gr]. There are currently only 3 or 4 buildings in Glaninchiquin. Immediately SE of this area, along the border between Maulagowna and Rossard townlands, is a magnificent waterfall - better, I'd say, than the one at Powerscourt. Most of the area around Inchiquin Lough is a Nature Reserve. As Glaninchiquin is an unofficial (and undefined area), you might want to also investigate the adjacent townlands of Cooryeen and Uragh. As for the RC churches, there is one at Lauragh town (Derreen townland) and another in Dawros townland, about 4 miles (by magpie) NNE of Glaninchiquin, on the river estuary - and perhaps 8 or 9 miles by road, but only 5 or 6 if walking the Beara Way.     3. I have been doing some research for a friend whose gr-grandmother was Margarite Lynch from Kerry. She was born in 1876 and her parents were Denis Lynch and Mary Shea. A famly letter stated they were from Glininchiquin which sounds like a townland but I could not find it listed anywhere.I do know the parish priest in 1898 was a Father Beagely if this rings a bell with anyone.Thanks,Jane Sullivan

    3. Does anyone know where I might find Irish Townland maps at the time of the 1901 Census and 1911 Census? I have a map of the Griffiths Valuation, now want to cross reference it with the Census maps, if in fact they are any different. Cheers Jeremy

    3. Hi All, For particularities, you want to get photocopies in color of the Cancelled land books which update in one place all legal land transfers since Griffiths. Brendan does a helluva good job for the euros. I did notice that the house or lot number may vary from Griffiths to the 1901 and 1911 censuses online. And there may be slight changes in townland boundaries as understood by the locals - one side of a field or stream vs the other

    3.   Jeremy,   I don't live in Ireland so I can't be certain, but my understanding is that the townland boundaries established for Griffiths Primary Valuation remained in use at least during the subsequent valuations (shown in cancelled land books) into the 20th century.  The census districts - DEDs (District Electoral Divisions) were comprised of numbers of townlands.     3. This must have been done as part of the Folklore Commission project in the same period to ensure the folklore of Ireland was not lost. It is a wonderful store of tradition based on interviews with old storytellers and children in schools. I have spent many happy hours in UCD in the Dept of Irish Folklore (called something else now), where these records are kept, researching for my new book on Irish myth and legend due out May 12 in Dublin. Termed the Schools’ Folklore Scheme, it was conducted in 1937-38 in collaboration with the Department of Education and the Irish National Teachers' Organisation. Over a period of eighteen months some 100,000 children in 5,000 primary schools in the twenty-six counties of the Irish Free State were encouraged to collect material in their home districts on a wide range of subjects dealing with local tradition and history. The topics about which the children were instructed to research and write included local history and monuments, folktales and legends, riddles and proverbs, songs, customs and beliefs, games and pastimes, traditional work practices and crafts, etc. The children collected this material mainly from their parents and grandparents and other older members of the local community or school district. Now known as the Schools' Manuscript Collection, the scheme resulted in more than half a million manuscript pages of valuable material. Schoolchildren from participating schools in Munster and Connacht were encouraged to write topographical descriptions of their own locality. This sub-collection consists of some 2,700 essays, selected by archive staff of the National Folklore Collection, on the subject “My Home District”. I can read the first pages of several of the essays that were of great interest to me - but do I read things correctly in that if I wish to read the other pages of each essay I must apply for permission due to the restricted access? It's pretty darned rare to find townland information so some of you might find some interesting tidbits. Termed the Schools' Folklore Scheme, it was conducted in 1937-38 in collaboration with the Department of Education and the Irish National Teachers' Organisation. Over a period of eighteen months some 100,000 children in 5,000 primary schools in the twenty-six counties of the Irish Free State were encouraged to collect material in their home districts on a wide range of subjects dealing with local tradition and history. The topics about which the children were instructed to research and write included local history and monuments, folktales and legends, riddles and proverbs, songs, customs and beliefs, games and pastimes, traditional work practices and crafts, etc. The children collected this material mainly from their parents and grandparents and other older members of the local community or school district. Now known as the Schools' Manuscript Collection, the scheme resulted in more than half a million manuscript pages of valuable material. Schoolchildren from participating schools in Munster and Connacht were encouraged to write topographical descriptions of their own locality. This sub-collection consists of some 2,700 essays, selected by archive staff of the National Folklore Collection, on the subject "My Home District".
