Florence Do you have any dates for your great grandmother - it may be possible to find her birth/baptism on www.irishgenealogy.ie. I would agree that it is possibly Listry. Does anyone know of a village named Listory, County, Kerry? My great grandmother's grave stone reads (born in Listory Co. of Kerry)
In case anyone might be connected to this particular Sullivan/O'Sullivan family (among the numerous Sullivans of Kerry), there is a long, detailed, interesting obit in today's Washington Post that includes this info: "Michael Joseph O’Sullivan was born Jan. 9, 1932, in Kilgarvan, in a mountainous area of County Kerry, Ireland, one of six children. Two sisters survive. He decided in high school to be a priest. He attended St. Kieran’s seminary in Kilkenny, Ireland, and in 1955 was ordained. He asked for duty as “a missionary any place in the English-speaking world” and was posted to Washington. After serving at St. Camillus Church in Silver Spring and Nativity Catholic Church in the District, he was assigned to St. Peter’s." http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/michael-osullivan-parish-priest-and-capitol-hill-presence-dies-at-81/2013/04/13/886d4c92-a3ad-11e2-9c03-6952ff305f35_story.html

Janet, I am related to Donnelly's in County Kerry. My 4x great grandmother Julia Donnelly born circa 1790, wife of James Kerrisk/Healy. Their son Daniel was born 1811 in Coolcaslagh. They moved to Beenathuane, Killeentierna, where more children were born. My other 4x great grandmother Ellen Donnelly born circa 1795 wife of Cornelius Foran, daughter Nora born 1820, they lived in Teernaboul(next to Coolcaslagh). I have a marriage record for Nora Foran/Daniel Healy stating they needed a dispensation to wed. I believe the 2 women were niece and aunt. I can prove without a doubt that Daniel was indeed the son of Julia Donnelly, he died in Worcester, MA 1895, mother was Julia O'Donnell. Nora Foran I have less solid proof but I have researched all the children of Cornelius Foran/Ellen Donnelly and all indications point to her records being correct. The researcher that sent the marriage record believes the 2 woman were related. There is another Donnelly in the Teernaboul/Coolcaslagh area, a Margaret, I have yet to determine how she relates to Julia and Ellen Donnelly. I have no Desmonds' on any of my records nor in my immigrant database. Hi Trish, When I visited Parish of Kilgarvan I went to the local tourist book store in the largest town.Happened to be Kenmare. I found great little books authored by locals on the subject .Staying in the town really helped as well. While there to find answers of any questions you may have the local grocery store is THE place to go. I got a phone number of the local town historian who came to see us at a local cafe. The local cafe had books as well I looked at. -- Everyone knew everyone, there are only 200 some people living in the town of Slaghts. Have fun! Patsy, I think you are right. I have looked at it on Google Earth and have been directed to some pictures taken in the last year, so I believe it didn't fall victim to the wrecking ball! I will definitely search it out when we are there in September. Interesting that Padraig O'Sullivan was quoted in your article. My gr grandfather's father was Patrick O'Sullivan (mother was Mary Kiely)! I've been told though that "Sullivans are thick on the ground in Kerry." Thanks for your help! That is interesting thanks Brian. The Foundation Stone for the present Catholic Church at Geraldine (South Canterbury, New Zealand) was laid on 8th December 1935. The Church at Geraldine is the Church of the Immaculate Conception. I know there were many from the Ballymacelligott Parish in Kerry who immigrated to the Geraldine area in New Zealand - including my great grandparents and other relations. Makes you wonder if the Geraldine church was named by some of those early immigrants from Ballymacelligott in memory of their church at 'home'. With thanks. Hello Reg, The Mary SUGRUE in this record was the daughter of Cornelius SUGRUE and Catherine nee GORMAN of Commons West, Ardfert in Kerry. Mary SUGRUE died on 2 March 1892 at the age of 33 and is buried in the Ellesmere Catholic Cemetery, near Leeston in Canterbury New Zealand. Three years later in 1883, Mary would be joined in New Zealand by her sisters Ellen and Catherine. My Mary DUGGAN arrived in New Zealand in December 1879 aboard the Lady Jocelyn and in October 1880 married my great grandfather Timothy SUGRUE. To date I have not located any evidence that the SUGRUEs from Ardfert were close relations to my SUGRUEs from Dromavalla in the Parish of Ballymacelligott. My query was – had any person on the list heard the Catholic Church in Ballymacelligott being referred to as The Church of the Immaculate Conception. This Baptismal certificate does not appear to still be in the family and the record does not appear in the Kerry Parish Records - there are no or very few pre 1868 records for Ballymacelligott on that site. However I have no doubts that Mary DUGGAN SUGRUE did indeed on her emigration to NZ in 1878 take her Baptismal Certificate with her from Kerry to her new home in New Zealand. I have to date not seen where the church at Ballymacelligott was named The Church of the Immaculate Conception. Has anyone every seen reference to the Church at Ballymacelligott having that name? Eoghan is correct, I have visited both, St. Brendan's is a very small church, no graveyard attached. The Iimmaculate Conception is a little bigger with a small graveyard, my granduncle Fr. Michael O'Donoghue was parish priest, he is buried just outside the front door. Most burials would have been in Tralee unless there was a family burial plot elsewhere.
