I've found only Rusheennacholla, Rusheennamanagh and Rusheenyvulligan! >> Tim, I think Dave has answered your questions - but the plain-vanilla Rusheen is still nagging. I think the subject has arised before. This past May, I visited another Tim --Robinson, down at the Old Quay in Roundstone. He's a master cartographer, and I bought one of his super Connemara maps, along with a detailed 150 page book of history, etymology and description of the various townlands. It's quite a work. Incidentally, his map was also used as a basis for the website: >> http://www.connemara.net/map/index.html <<. I'm not sure if everything is there, as once I get a "real" paper map, I lose interest in a representation on a dinky TV screen <gr>. Anyway, rant aside, the map and the book mention only the Roisin-xxxxxxxx (I'm going to ignore the fadas, for Rootsweb's sake) townlands, and no straight Roisin. There are, of course, various peninsulas on the map named just "Roisin", but that's not significant - as that's what the word means. There is one small settlement (currently 5 or 6 clustered buildings) called Roisin, on the north shore of a lake/inlet called Crompan (Choill Saile) - fadas galore omitted - inland from Flannery Bridge 2 or 3 miles N of Kilkieran. If you have a Discovery map 44, this settlement is shown at 862 357. Neither the lough's name or the settlement's are mentioned on the Disc. map, but they are on Tim's, and perhaps on the website above. I think this particular Roisin is very unlikely to be the one in question - it's too small, etc. (and it might be named on the basis of a small peninsula there, extending into the lough). I wonder if one of the elongated Rusheen-xxxxxx townlands just lost the suffix from the tedium of use - and the residents now ignore all of the other letters. It's certainly happened in several other places I've encountered. Sorry to "wax ecstatic" on this subject......but everytime I open Tim's map, I become a bit crazy. There's so much additional information on it, beyond other maps I have, that I go ga-ga. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts
