I've had several people contact me about this database. I gave the only web addresses I have in my original post: webexchange.org and ancestry.com Webexchange was presumably the original host of the ESB database, but that part of it's site seems to be unavailable at the moment. It seems that ancestry acquired the database earlier this year. A google search on ESB throws up hundreds of hits. Maybe there is another site out there which also allows access to these records? I haven't checked - does anybody know of one? For those of you who don't subscribe to ancestry.com, I suggest you check out your local LDS. In the UK, the LDS provide free access to ancestry - I'm sure it's the same elsewhere in the world. The original records have been microfilmed and are held by the NY library. These records are amazingly detailed, as the information obtained was to provide definitive proof of identity in a time without ID cards, passports and photographs, and when so many were illiterate. That was New York - I wonder if there was anything similar in other US cities? What about Boston and San Francisco? Are there similar records lying around in a store room somewhere? Cathy
Cathy, I don't think there are any on-line sites available, but there are 'lookups' for the NY ESB. They're listed at Pat Connors' website: www.connorsgenealogy.com. Look under 'Directories'. I think one might have to sign on to the NY-Irish list in order to use these lookups. There's also a lot of discussion about ESB at the NY-Irish list Archives. Hope this helps a little.
