    1. List problems..........

    3. A rootsweb server has been down for about a week (6th to the 14th Nov). Clare. Limerick, Galway, Leix and Monaghan stand amongst the lists hosted by the server that was down. Between them, these lists have about 2000 subscribers (minimum). I went away on the 8th, prior to going away, I emailed as many subscribers as I could informing them of the fact that the server was down and that they could possibly be unsubscribed from the list once the server came back on line. Unsubscription would have nothing to do with the group - or be personal. The simple fact is that most listowners have their lists set so that if three emails to any account bounce back to the listbots at rootsweb, then that account will be automatically unsubscribed. When a list goes down - then lots of people write in asking if it is down - other people send mails to the list as they normally would - these emails all gather - waiting to be delivered............... and when the server is back on line, well, it;s like a massive rush for all those emails to get through - and for those of you who have a limit on the size of your mailbox, that limit can be reached very quickly.............and all of a sudden, the list robot at rootsweb sees that 3 emails have bounced and unsubscribe you. The awful thing is.............that you won't get that unsubscribe email because it too will bounce back to rootsweb........... right into my mail box!! I apologise to those of you who I did not manage to contact before I went away - in honesty..........I never for one minute thought it would go on as long as it did - but, I did my best. All in all, I sent out 560 emails to subscribers............just telling them that lists were down, and then metioning that they might be unsubbed from the list because of the list settings but not to mind that. I could only send out so many emails at a time - after five emails with the same subject line, my anti-virus programme begins to warn me with each mail that I may have a virus sending out mails.............also, I have to be careful because even though my warning is legitimate - the anti virus/hacker watching programmes on other peoples servers can decide that I am or my server is a spammer..........too many emails with the same subject line from the same source being received by the server. Then, we have the people who have an anti-virus/spammer programme on their computers.............and if I am not an approved email address................then their programme writes to tell me that I am not on that list and my email has been sent to limbo........... So.................I'm sorry that I didn't get to everybody...............I did write to some (many) - and that mail was returned to me for whatever reason. If you know someone who is wondering where their list mail is or why they have been unsubbed.......then, please tell them to resubscribe - the robots unsubscribed them. Please understand that if you are suddenly getting no mail from a list that is usually active..............then there is more than likely a problem with the server............OR - for some reason your subscription has been terminated. Rootsweb are not the only people who have servers go down. Sometimes, you ay not even realise it, but your own server can go down and there may have been three emails to you from a rootsweb list during that time (however short) and you may have been unsubbed. It's happened me - from lists that I am administrator of!! Please don't be hurt or wonder what you did wrong to warrent being unsubbed from any list. If you receive no mail from your lists - then the first thing you should do is try re-subbing to that list. Jane
