I am looking for the families of Bridget WHELAN (b. about 1817) and Redmond BURKE (b. about 1810). He came from Galway City; she was from County Galway but I'm not sure which city. His parents were John and Catherine BURKE; hers were Nathaniel and Bridget WHELAN. They were married by the time they left Ireland (in 1841) for Sydney, Australia, as assisted immigrants; her parents were still alive at the time, but his don't appear to have been. According to the manifest, he was a shepherd. They had one daughter, Mary (my great-great grandmother), born March 16, 1844, in Sydney. Redmond died in Sydney in February 1845; Bridget remarried in August of that year (to James SULLIVAN, who I think was from County Cork). They emigrated to San Francisco, California, arriving in January 1850. They had five daughters and a son: Bridget (Delia), Ellen, Margaret (Maggie), Katie, James and Francisco (a daughter, and yes, that name is correct). The first two were born in Sydney; the rest in San Francisco. James died around 1860. Bridget died, I believe, in 1891, having never remarried. The family was supported even before James' death by three of the oldest four daughters and the son dancing on the stage; Maggie later became a successful actress under the stage name Maggie MOORE. One of Bridget's siblings may have emigrated as well, settling in Virginia City, Nevada. I came across a reference to an unnamed aunt of the children becoming ill during the 1860s and Bridget taking some of the children with her to Virginia City to nurse her. Mary and Ellen both married men from Virginia City and lived out their lives there. Any information about them would be helpful. Joann
